election but several people have been killed and dozens injured in blasts near polling stations after the taliban want voters to stay at home. and zimbabwe's former president robert mugabe was buried in his rule home town today it followed weeks of wrangling between the government and his family over his final resting place. i'm rebecca ritter's welcome to the program fresh rallies have been taking place in hong kong to mark a 5 years since the start of the so-called on bella movement which saw the beginning of mass protests in the territory pro-democracy demonstrators have same protocol protesting for months after a controversial extradition bill was tabled back in march this year it's since been shelved but protesters have a wide range of demands that. echoes of 5 years ago thing played direct democracy

for hong kong and autonomy from china. earlier i spoke with our correspondent charlotte tilson pill in hong kong and asked how the protests had shaped up on the anniversary. a lot of people were back i had predicted clashes on the streets today and that is what we saw for a brief time protesters were throwing bricks and stones and government buildings molotov cocktails as well police then responded with water cannon briefly using up blue dye that we've seen a couple of times previously designed to identify and to mock protesters now what we've seen since is that many of the protesters have to spend they've gone home but in this area just behind me a short time ago police were starting to pull buses to the side of the road which buses that people were using to get home they were taking people off those buses many of them were lined up along this will just behind me and death possessions. a

number of people where arrested just behind me a short time ago it's still slightly unclear how many people were driven away in those police vehicles but it appears that anybody believed to have taken part in the march i was being searched and. queues over the behavior that is despite the fact this protest was agreed was allowed by police so we've seen buses in numerous areas not just hate being pulled to one side protest of being such a will these protests have many similarities to 24 times umbrella movement what kind of lessons have the protesters of today taken from those events 5 years ago. many similarities in terms of that demands back of it crucially the umbrella movement failed in the eyes of many people they didn't win the concessions that they wanted from beijing so a lot of people here say that they need to learn from mistakes that were made during that movement 5 years ago you said one of the what they've done is they

tried to diversify and they didn't become more creative now the protests back in 2014 was launched estatic they occupied right around government complex what we see now is a process is adopt the structure. see that they're calling the water water is actually means that the fluids keep away from riot police and keep up the events and throughout the evening so the protests can continue long into the night protesters are also trying to come up with different ways of making their voices heard without taking to the streets to see a human chain is happening we've seen huge levels walls of messages left by protesters urging that these calling these a democratic reforms that they're looking for that is how they want to keep up their men to and of course to keep their protest movement in the public eye keep up public support and keep the eyes of the world on hong kong. china tell some pill in hong kong thank you. polls have closed in afghanistan's presidential election

with people voting amid a wave of violence and concerns about legitimacy the last elections in 24 tane were mired in allegations of fraud and ended with the u.s. stepping in to appoint a power sharing government face talks between the taliban and the us collapsed earlier this month the islamist group threatened to disrupt the election with violence and there have been dozens of attacks across the country they went to vote and ended up in hospital. joy after the polling station opened some voters came in and cast their votes and suddenly there was an explosion i don't remember what happened after that i got wounded. over here in kunduz in afghanistan's north as well as in kandahar in the south voters were left injured after attacks on polling stations votes are now being counted after a tense polling day marred by violence or threats of it from the taliban. for many

voters peace security and corruption of the most pressing concerns. that doesn't get out of the hut. would i demand of the leader i voted for is that he provides security throughout the country. and also that he make peace with the taliban long lasting peace. the 2 lead candidates each claim they are best suited to address the country's problems one of them is current president ashraf ghani. they will this peace is the 1st demanded of our nation. and this election will give us the legitimacy we need to bring peace to this nation that want to stand with. the other is up to a lab the country's chief executive the 2 have been in an uneasy government of national unity since 2014 when they both claimed victory in elections marred by

fraud whoever wins this time will have to find a way to deal with the taliban the are you talking to the taliban forces who have threatened this election process i would like to say as a citizen of this country and as a voter that threatening innocent people is not a demonstration of strength on your part. and that casualties among innocent civilians will not benefit you. after decades of war and misery and a number of fraudulent elections voters will be demanding bold action from the new president in a country that continues to face very difficult conditions. and joining me now for more is journalist alley live t.v. from the capital kabul there were fears of widespread attacks ahead of today's elections by the taliban did they materialize. there definitely were attacks in several provinces across the country in the east in the south in the north. the
6:08 pm
attacks were definitely issue and i think that's what kept people from coming out to vote but the major issue is still this sort of logistical nightmare that's become a repeat of the parliamentary elections of october where people showed up to vote and they were told that their names weren't on the voter where they were told that the biometric machines weren't working. and you know this really frustrated people people were waiting for hours to cast their vote they were happy to cast their vote they defied the taleban right and yet you know this became a major issue for them. so attack those technical and logistical problems you were just talking about and florida i mean can this really be considered a free and fair election. i think that that will come down to the results we'll see we'll see what happens and you know we'll see what the turnout actually comes out to. for a lot of places you know people were saying that the turnout was lower than expected
6:09 pm
and obviously a big part of that is the talabani. groupy the statement saying that they would target these. elections and we've seen them target campaigns and we've seen them targeted campaign officials you know it is the real serious issue for people but despite that people still came out to vote you know they still took the risk and they still accepted it so that's always considered a victory in this country president ghazi said before the vote of the most important issue with finding a leader who could bring peace to the war torn nation can any candidate have a realistic chance of doing. that's a question of people are asking because when the peace talks broke down in september 20 days before the election this was a question that people were asking are we going to be in another 5 years of war and we've seen that all since september 8th. we've seen the taliban increase their tax
6:10 pm
we've seen the u.s. increase their tax be seen along government increase their tax relief is really worrying people but of course you know the president and his rivals ducked out of the law both said that as soon as elections are settled they will move on to the issue of peace so what they have to do after that is to convince the taliban that they can sit down with them the real partner because at this point the taliban really only wants to talk to the u.s. . so the biggest challenge for any government that in the future is to convince the taliban that they're worth sitting down that they have legitimacy and that they can actually help negotiate a peace an actual on peace rather than one that was negotiated between washington. and the live t.v. reporting from kabul thanks very much for your analysis thank you. zimbabwe the former president robert mugabe has been buried at his rule home
