mark the anniversary the umbrella movement 1st could not the city in 2014 this year the protests have taken on even more force as the authorities tried to push through a law since scrapped allowing defendants to be extradited to mainland china. from today's anti extradition may have meant has brought people together 5 years ago people had differing opinions which caused the movement to break up today it's very different. i guess i'll have home at that at. 5 he is soft at the emperor and a nuisance the hong kong people who had previously been dormant if united aga hand on the so-called lenin wools have become another symbol of the protests surfaces across the city covered in post it notes calling for democracy often toned down by beijing's supporters one of the best known leaders of the protests joshua was jailed earlier this year today announced he would be standing in local elections.
9:03 am
frankly speaking right of all this is the most mall the right peaceful and rational way to express our political beliefs if they block activists just like me to run for office they need to provide a price later in the day the mood turned ugly as police turned water cannons on the protesters put 5 years off to the umbrella movement began activists to celebrating their victory earlier this year in getting the extradition been scrapped they remain as determined deserve a to keep pressing that demands for democracy. let's go live now to hong kong where our correspondent charlotte and phil is standing by charlotte the protests seem to be getting violent yet again can you tell us what's going on where you are. just a short time ago the on this story here behind me was thick with tear gas smoke riot
9:04 am
police fired several rounds of tear gas at the protests we were gathered here and of course the journalists here as well reporting on not this one the area where this anti totalitarian protest was shed will to start that take us there was fired just moments after the protests was meant to begin it appears police here were trying to crack down on the protest the school it even started people here though and now back on the streets already determined to keep going to find in the face that a gas many of them holding an umbrella that's trying to shield themselves from view from the helicopter which is flying overhead at the moment we're hearing was that a number of the protesters a planning to continue along the planned route from this area usually a very busy shopping district here in hong kong to the government complex now what has to be pointed out is the golden eyes of this event did not apply in the commission meaning that this protest according to authorities here is now on the.

shoulder 2 days of protests are supposed to be part of a global event but i imagine that they have special significance in hong kong. will this protests here is part of a series of events planned across the 4 days leading up to choose day not to say is crucial to say the date that observers here people in hong kong have been eyeing for several weeks and that is because it's the 70th anniversary of the founding of the people's republic of china people anticipating a lot of unrest in the build up to that event and then of course yesterday we saw the 5th on a bestiary of the umbrella movement the credit no man's that's the grips kind of home back in 2430 this is the title. carey price of is another a number of high profile events designed sirrah i get the attention of the world people in hong kong here on the protests trying to keep up momentum and of course

trying to keep up public support for the gym on weapons of charlotte the images behind you appear to be fairly peaceful are there any signs that there are efforts being made right now to deescalate the violence. the. what is so often the pattern of these protests it could be peaceful but one moment the next minute you might see tear gas and of course water cannon as well preparing that attempts to. crackdown alyona this protest on trying to stop this from escalating early on rather than let it continue well into the night. troll itself until in hong kong 1st thank you charlotte. austrians are going to the polls today to elect a new government after a corruption scandal in may prompted the spectacular collapse of the right wing coalition government all eyes are on the front runner former chancellor sebastian
9:07 am
kurtz and his conservative austrian people's party curch is expected to win the hand of may but will probably need a coalition partner to secure a stable majority and who will pick is currently anybody's guess. for more let's bring in our correspondent max hoffman who's outside a polling station in vienna so sebastian kurtz as you know max has long been leading in the polls is his win a foregone conclusion. let's put it this way there really is no way around cool it's also because most of the other parties have ruled out a coalition with the far right freedom party and. has not he's expected to poll with more than 10 percent of the vote ahead of all the others so that is very very comfortable margin and so the answer is quite simple yes it's likely that the next will be courts so as you mention he is not ruling out forming
9:08 am
a government with the freedom party and yet that is the party that led to the scandal that brought down his previous government why has he not ruled it out. although the 1st thing is that the freedom party is the party where on the issues that very close to that is they already had a program they already had a coalition that coalition was supposed to hold until 2022 so they wouldn't have to do much work to get back into the game again so that's number one number 2 is maybe he wants to keep his options open and not alienate any of his voters also he's always been trying to appeal to the right of the voters spectrum for example on migration by the way a topic he's very close to the freedom party party as well and he's probably most comfortable in that coalition but the problem of course is that with all the scandals that the freedom party has not overcome yet it might not be a very stable coalition you know an outsider looking into all this would say well
9:09 am
therefore the scandal that plagued the last government clearly didn't have an impact on the public. it didn't it doesn't seem like it had a huge impact if you look at the numbers the freedom party which is at the center of all those scandals is set to lose about 3 maybe 4 percent we'll have to see today later on in the day and that's not a whole lot if you look at the scope of the scandal you're absolutely right there but there is a little impact i mean we talked to people here in the streets that went into that polling station behind me and they said the thing that they are really looking for in this election is to try to have more calm to calm things down in politics and that really is a code for we're not going to vote for the freedom party but it's a different story outside of the big cities there people say ok it's us against the rest of the world we don't believe what the media saying we don't believe all those scandals we're going to stick with our party who don't up for us at least that's the feeling they have and that's the explanation why the freedom party is set to
