the semi autonomous territory between activists and police on most weekends us. earlier i spoke to shoulder charleston pill in hong kong i asked her if police were already engaging in a show of force just a short time ago the add on this street here behind me was thick with tear gas smoke riot police fired several rounds of tear gas at the protests you would gather today and of course the john is here as well reporting on that this one the area where this anti totalitarian protest was sched jewel to start that take us there was 5 just moments alter the protests was meant to begin at a pace police he was trying to crack down on the protests the school it even started people here though and now back on the streets already determined to keep going to find in the face of that take as many of them holding on breath as trying to shield themselves from view from the helicopter which is flying overhead at the

moment we're hearing word that a number of the protesters have planning to continue along the plans were from this area usually a very busy shopping district here in hong kong to the government complex now what has to be pointed out is the organizers of this event did not apply the permission meaning that this protest according to authorities here is now on the. show that 2 days of protests are supposed to be part of a global event but i imagine that they have special significance in hong kong. will this protests here is part of the series. otello the events planned across the 4 days leading up to choose day now choose day is crucial to say the date that observers here people in hong kong have been eyeing the several week and that is because it's the 70th anniversary of the founding of the people's republic of china people anticipating a lot of unrest in the build up to that event and then of course yesterday we saw

from escalating early on rather than let it continue well into the night. and kill in hong kong 1st thank you for that. austrians are going to the polls today to elect a new government after a corruption scandal in may prompted the spectacular collapse of the right wing coalition government all eyes are on the front runner former chancellor sebastian kirks and his conservative austrian people's party church is expected to win handily but will probably need a coalition partner to secure a stable majority and who will pick is currently anybody's guess. for more let's bring in our correspondent max hoffman who's outside a polling station in vienna so sebastian kurtz as you know max has long been leading in the polls is his win a foregone conclusion. let's put it this way there really is no way around cool it's also because most of the other parties have ruled out

a coalition with the far right freedom party. has not he's expected to poll with more than 10 percent of the vote ahead of all the others so that is very very comfortable margin and so the answer is quite simple yes it's likely that the next will be courts so as you mentioned he is not ruling out forming a government with the freedom party and yet that is the party that led to the scandal that brought down his previous government why has he not ruled it out. of the 1st thing is that the freedom party is the party where on the issues that the very close to that is they already had a program they already had a coalition that coalition was supposed to hold until 2022 so they wouldn't have to do much work to get back into the game again so that's number one number 2 is maybe he wants to keep his options open and not alienate any of his voters also he's

always been trying to appeal to the right of the voters spectrum for example on by the way a topic he's very close to the freedom party party as well and he's probably most comfortable in that coalition but the problem of course is that with all the scandals that the freedom party has not over yet it might not be a very stable coalition you know an outsider looking into all this would say well therefore the scandal that plagued the last government clearly didn't have an impact on the public. it didn't it doesn't seem like it had a huge impact if you look at the numbers the freedom party which is at the center of all those scandals is set to lose about 3 maybe 4 percent we'll have to see today later on in the day and that's not a whole lot if you look at the scope of the scandal but you're absolutely right there but there is a little impact i mean we talked to people here in the streets that went into that polling station behind me and they said the thing that they are really looking for in this election is to try to have more calm to calm things down in politics and
10:08 am
that really is a code for we're not going to vote for the freedom party but it's a different story outside of the big cities there people say ok it's us against the rest of the world we don't believe what the media saying we don't believe all those scandals we're going to stick with our party you do it up for us at least that's the feeling they have and that's the explanation why the freedom party is set to gain yet again more than 20 percent of the vote. in vienna next thanks so much now to some of the other stories making news around the world at least 36 people have been killed in a roadway collision near you in china's young province local officials say a bus veered into the opposite lane an expressway in collided with a truck a flat tire is thought to have caused the accident. clashes with right wing protesters have marred a gay pride march in the eastern polish city of loveland about 1500 people marched under heavy guard police used water cannon and detained several dozen far right

voters to stay at home there were also problems with the voting process fueling concerns about the legitimacy of the poll. they went to vote and ended up in hospital it was a joy after the polling station opened some voters came in and cost their votes and suddenly there was an explosion i don't remember what happened after that i got wounded was it more not for me to watch it over here in kunduz in afghanistan's north as well as in kandahar in the south photos were left injured after attacks on polling stations votes and now being counted after a tense polling day month by violence or threats of it from the taliban. for many voters peace security and corruption of the most pressing concerns. that doesn't get iraq the hasek as a would i demand as the leader i voted for is that he provides security throughout

the country. and also that he make peace with the taliban and long lasting peace. the 2 lead candidates each claim they are best suited to address the country's problems one of them is current president ashraf ghani. they will as. peace is the 1st demanded of our nation. and this election will give us the legitimacy we need to bring peace to this nation that want to stand with. the other is up to a lab the country's chief executive the 2 have been in an uneasy government of national unity since 2014 when they both claimed victory in elections mount by fraud whoever wins this time will have to find a way to deal with the taliban the are you sure the taliban forces who have threatened this election process i would like to say as a citizen of this country and us a voter that threatening innocent people is not
