and. pro-democracy protests in hong kong police firing tear gas at protesters taking part in. mainland china 70 years of communist rule. is in the middle of those protests also coming to. the. general election which.
12:01 pm
is anybody's guess. is under way in afghanistan's presidential election the vote took place in the shadow of. several people who were killed and dozens injured in polling sticks. into the show. what's being called anti totalitarianism demonstrations are taking place in hong kong just 2 days before china's leadership celebrates 70 years of communist rule clashes have broken out between the demonstrators and hong kong police officers used tear gas and water cannon to disperse the crowds the last 4 months have seen violent confrontations in the semi autonomous territory between activists and police on most weekends.
12:02 pm
earlier i spoke to our correspondent allison pil who's at those protests i asked her whether the police had been taking a hard line with the demonstrators. and that's quite right we've seen several rounds to gas fired today from the moment that this praise has got underway within minutes police began the day by firing tear gas at those protesters they then quickly reassembled back on the street and we see more take out the roundup in the buildings the water cannon being fired as well with that blue dye that the police are now using regularly as a way of identifying protesters now where we are right now we've got and huge known line of protesters here queuing up in line clearing the paul so that they can move supplies up to the front line just behind me as quickly as possible moving on the front lines in good time i occasionally will have barricades coming along here as well for the people who are involved in clashes with police at the moment
12:03 pm
occasionally will have some of the more hardcore of the protest is dressed fully and black faces cobbett equipped with face not the helmets running along had to get to the front lines and spontaneous applause breaks out among many people 92 with this is that now these protests as you know are supposed to be part of a global event but i imagine that on the ground where you are they feel very local and even more. significant. people here are of course aware of the protests that have been planned all around the world but what that really focused on is making this part of the weekend a protest that people hate protested the zaps as well have been looking to this weekend in particular as a landmark moment in this lengthy craze has made big enough for 2 reasons festival of course yesterday so the bit on the battery of the umbrella movement that
12:04 pm
a protest movement back in 2014 calling for democratic reforms and then crucially she was day will bring the 70th on the resume of the founding of the people's republic of china protesters here the package will events leading up to that landmark moment on tuesday when people are once again expected to take to the streets how is thought that the police response they bought today cracking down so early on after this process began is designed to put people off from taking process some of the process the planned over the weekend today's protest is an important day. for the according to authorities not because the organizers didn't request police to hold it so it is according to authorities here it is now unknowable they are cracking down hard now on the people on the streets that steve charlotte chelsea until reporting for hong kong thanks troll that. austrians are going to the polls today to elect a new government after corruption scandal in may prompted the spectacular collapse
12:05 pm
of the right wing coalition government all eyes are on the front runner former chancellor sebastian courage in his concerted conservative austrian people's party which is party is expected to win handily but will probably need a coalition partner to secure a stable majority and you will pick east currently anybody's guess. for more let's bring in our correspondent max hoffman who's outside a polling station in vienna so sebastian kurtz has long been leading in the polls max is this election a foregone conclusion. if you look at the numbers at the see has a huge huge advantage about 10 percentage points those are the polls around 34 percent in the next party will probably come in and around 2425 percent so the problem of course is that all the other parties basically all the other parties have excluded to form a coalition with the far right freedom party the only party that really hasn't done
12:06 pm
that is the one. that gives him many more options and you know in short there really won't be any way around the bus or courts to form a coalition. so it was a far right freedom party of course max that caused a scandal that brought down his last government why isn't he ruling out forming a partnership with them. first of all he's very close to the freedom party on many topics for example on migration 2nd of all they already had a program in place because that was the coalition that broke down before the summer but the plan was to stick together until 2022 so it would be very easy for him just to do this again say ok the scandal is over the main person that caused the scandal . was removed and now we go forward the problem with this of course is that it's a scandal ridden party and it's not necessarily more stable so he hasn't included excluded cole
12:07 pm
a coalition with the right wing far right freedom party but he hasn't excluded any other coalition as well a scandal ridden party perhaps but does it mean that this scandal itself didn't have an impact on the public. if you look at the numbers it hasn't had the impact that many expected of course the freedom party is expected to lose some percentage points but probably no more than 3 to 5 percent which is not a whole lot if you look at the back. but it did have some impact at least voters that went to this polling station behind me i talked to some of them earlier and here's what they said. definitely not a peoples party freedom party coalition we've seen that wasn't such a good idea to say. this if it if i hope it would be a setback for the freedom party and they want to get into government why. that's just. almost nothing cystic and i can't stand that.
12:08 pm
i want to see less cheating going behind people's backs not so much brutality i just want it to get better. and. so a lot of people here are looking for peace and calm and politics and the freedom party but that's in the city that's in vienna if you go outside in the countryside many people are still sticking with the far right freedom party that's. been following the elections and thank you match. now to some of the other stories making news around the world at least 36 people have been killed in a roadway collision near you shane in china's jiang su province local officials say a bus veered into the opposite lane on an expressway and collided with a truck a flat tire is thought to have caused the accident. clashes with right wing protesters have marred a gay pride march in the eastern polish city of lublin but 1500 people marched
12:09 pm
under heavy guard police used water cannon and detained several dozen far right demonstrators. afghanistan's presidential election day has been mord by as many as 68 taliban attacks most of them using rockets official say at least 5 people were killed and scores more were injured the islamist group threatened to disrupt the election with violence and had warned voters to stay at home but some vote voters refused to be deterred. by dula not voting was no option he waited patiently to cast his ballot in kabul he's part of afghanistan's urban middle class and he can't believe so many people in his country are turning their backs on democracy. and i think afghanistan should take a lesson from other democracies as many people should vote as possible it's a good thing to be able to choose who's president that's the only way things can

improve. but incumbent president ashraf ghani is not getting sued by tailless vote he's governed for 5 years but critics say he's failed to bring peace taliban extremists are stronger than ever they view gandhi as washington's puppet and refused to negotiate with him but he's still the favorite in this race vowing another try at peace talks there will this. you read a piece is the most important thing our country needs that this election will make it possible that it will give us the mandate we need to create peace. but the taliban disrupted saturday's ballot with numerous attacks despite heavy security fear kept many voters at home but frustration with the economy and corruption also played a role critics give afghanistan's chief executive part of the plane he's got the

strongest challenger despite having governed together with him in the current coalition raising doubts that he's a true alternative. you cannot see saturday's elections as a victory for democracy because turnout was way too low so far we just have unofficial numbers but everything points in that direction. so by dula didn't stay home though even amid rumors about election manipulation he thinks afghanistan needs democracy and he plans to head back to the polls if the presidential contest goes to a 2nd round in november. the berlin marathon has seen its 1st runners cross the finish line and atheist in east l.a. was just seconds off a new world record thousands of runners are participating in the race in the german capital the race saw the 2nd fastest marathon time ever be recorded by because it

was a strong showing for ethiopia with becker taking 1st place in the women's race joining us now from the course is. tuckey alina the berlin marathon is always seen as a fast race but no new records today. well as you just said president marathon is known for fast times and public records but no world record was broken here today but we did come awfully close although that wasn't the intention of the organizers there ain't this time around. this year was just about making this a very attractive a very close race and that's how we got it and but the rain of course has been really a bit of a damp not as many. have come out in every part of the route so far rain but a beautiful backdrop to talk us through some of the. yeah so we had of course the kenyan dominance at the berlin marathon has finally ended
12:13 pm
it was the ethiopians that basically dominated the podium 10 and he said take a lay i mean what a comeback for the 37 year old he ended up finishing this race in 2 hours and minute and 41 seconds as you just mentioned he came so close to reaching to basically he just missed the world record by 2 seconds people need to understand that this is a major comeback for me for him he was a late entry into the marathon a lot of people didn't even think he was going to participate he's had a lot of these nagging injuries that have been giving him problems and of course who are performances so for him what an incredible comeback and on the woman side of course it was also an ethiopian dominance we had. a who of course was an outsider she wasn't a favorite but after the 40 kilometer walk she began to really dominate this marathon it was after that it was smooth sailing for her. if i was out there today
12:14 pm
i'd probably be rolling in and about midnight tonight but i see that there's still plenty of people running behind you. exactly so we've read. the 3 hour mark and this is what also what makes the berlin marathon and americans in general so special that it's not just of all us right now the people coming in here as so behind me screaming and. we can say the same with professionals but we're still expecting over 45000 runners to eventually reach that finish mooc but of course we have to be a bit patient because you know it will take a bit more time for the amateurs to finally crossed out by 45000 talking at the berlin marathon 1st thank you so much alina. and a reminder of the top story we're following for you clashes. in hong kong at an 80 totalitarianism rally police use water cannons and tear gas it comes as mainland
