it's a v.w. news live from berlin another tense day in hong kong with thousands defying the government covered face as protesters marched in solidarity against the ban on face masks to anger is high after lawmakers challenge the ban but failed to police fired tear gas in several areas also coming out. tunisians go to the polls to elect a new parliament it looks like more voters than ever could throw their support behind outsider candidates as dissatisfaction with me pardew's grows.

i married to evanston it's good to have you with us tens of thousands of pro-democracy activists in hong kong are defying the newly introduced ban on wearing face masks during protests that's despite a legal setback pro-democracy lawmakers attempted to overturn the ban but that was rejected by hong kong's high court the territory's chief executive kerri lam imposed a colonial era emergency law and face mask ban on friday angry protesters have clashed with police in response authorities fired tear gas to disperse the crowds. spontaneity is the thing that is following developments in hong kong and he joins us now for the latest so. the court has now rejected the challenge to the emergency
1:02 pm
law so how have protesters been responding to that decision. well protesters are out again today where you have seen some of the pictures and it has been pretty much the same as in the other weekends protesters coming out in big numbers in the beginning clashes erupt police firing tear gas i have witnessed several dozens of rounds of tear gusting amounts are getting more and more liberal and then at some point the protesters there put police charges at them and the protesters leave if anything was different today that was in the beginning off the march before violence erupted more protesters than ever were wearing face masks they're clearly not accepting this law and this injunction that was not granted today is not changing anything. so much yes you know these protests have been going
1:03 pm
on now for months and months and up to now hong kong's leader kerry lamb more or less seemed to be taking a kind of hands off approach i mean she issued a few statements against the demonstrators but now it appears she's taking more of a firm stance with this emergency law which has been upheld by the court so what's next as far as the protesters are concerned. the government from the beginning has left it to the police to try to end these protests this has clearly not worked as we have seen an escalation from both sides since the beginning gradually. the police has been charging earlier they have been using more violence we have seen videos of police beating up protesters clearly violating their. powers using their powers
1:04 pm
and we have seen protesters getting more and more violent we are seeing petrol bombs now regularly so this is these emergency law is some. nothing like. more of the same the government seems to be convinced that if more violence barks more violence than more violence will probably solve the problem there has been no attempt to to meet the demands of the protesters to open a political way of dialogue i think it's probably as we said least what we hear that kerry lam's hands are also tight that beijing does not want to appear weak no this. emergency law is something that is really controversial lawmakers democratic lawmakers see it as in conflict with a mini constitution of hong kong their laws much older than the constitution
1:05 pm
and days they see this use of the executive imposing emergency law without asking the legislature the parliament. something that is unconstitutional if she gets this true and this is not the end get off the judicial process it's just an injunction that was not granted but the whole law the whole. application of the law will be under revision later this month then it would open the path for more draconian measures curfews and media censorship being some of them all right hunting as being of bringing us up to date on developments in hong kong we thank you very much. let's get a check now some of the other stories making news around the world. north korea has broken off talks with the united states on its nuclear program officials blamed us inflexibility for the collapse of talks in stockholm the american delegation says

it put forward some constructive initiatives. in ecuador indigenous groups and union organizations have returned to the streets to protest the government's austerity measures this comes after 2 days of violent demonstrations that saw hundreds of people arrested president lenin moreno has declared a 2 month state of emergency. u.s. democratic presidential candidate bernie sanders has returned to his vermont home after being treated for a heart attack and 78 year old underwent heart surgery in las vegas and says he will return to the campaign trail as one of the leading contenders for the democratic nomination. voting is underway in tunisia as citizens elect a new parliament today's poll comes just weeks after the 1st round of presidential elections where voters turned their backs on traditional parties in favor of independent candidates and that trend is expected to continue candidates are

contesting 217 seats in the country's parliament the legislature has been dominated by the islamists and after a party it is ruling in alliance with the secular party needed to mean high unemployment and a lack of complex services are fueling discontent. or do w. reporter and north africa analyst is here with me in the studio to talk about all of this hello to you i so according to some political analysts around 80 percent of tunisians don't trust in the established parties why is that so high why do they not trust them my impression is that most voters surely. they've given established parties enough enough of a chance this is the 3rd legislative election since the outbreak of the arab spring in 2011 tunisia was the country where this wave of revolutions started and
1:08 pm
throughout throughout these 22 parliamentary periods the deep seated reasons of why the airplane happened in tunisia haven't been solved so this election is happening against the backdrop of high prices soaring prices youth unemployment which is estimated to be up to 30 percent in some rural areas and 15 percent in some of the cities and also inflation and corruption and from some of the people that i've spoken to they feel that the political parties have been too busy discussing personnel issues rather than coming up with effective policy in the past some 9 years and they're they're losing their patience with them all right we just mentioned it during the presidential poll which was just a few weeks ago voters really punished the established parties. can we expect the same to happen this time around we were talking before the show opinion polls are not allowed in tunisia opinion polls are not allowed into but as you said you know this is this is a very historically unique. moment for tunisia where presidential elections had to
1:09 pm
happen prematurely because the previous president passed away and you know if this if the trend continues if the result of the results of the 1st round of the presidential elections are any indication independents are likely to win big they have also made quite headway in some local elections which we've seen previously no party is expected to make the 109 seats in parliament majority to form a government which means that as as with the previous government there a coalition government is to be expected this would be difficult coalition making is difficult in any part of the world and in a place like tunisia is likely to take more time and the 2 more frustration but independents are expected to make big gains as well. so you may not be easy to form a government especially if coalitions are involved and yet tunisia is the only country that has seen democratic reforms since the arab spring i had just how democratic is
1:10 pm
the country today just certainly a democracy and unlike other countries in the region like egypt for example tunisia has managed to avoid descending back into military rule so it's certainly also a sieve it's a civilian led democracy which is a is a huge accomplishment i mean one might look at the elections in tunisia and they certainly have a lot of problems but i think you know this this kind of discontent with established parties and moving towards independent parties is actually a sign of political maturity for tunisians they are unhappy and they're registering their dissatisfaction through the polls the results are likely to be difficult but that is part of building a democracy and to just also the only country that has evolved its political system they now have this mix party system as opposed to a presidential dominated system which it had before the arab spring. always great to hear in science thank you so much. now the united nations is calling for an end to the violence in iraq which is

a left nearly $100.00 people dead and thousands wounded security forces have repeatedly opened fire on demonstrators who've been protesting against corruption and unemployment. i was there was. another funeral procession in iraq the country has seen almost a 100 deaths in the past week this one is for a protester whose family say he was shot by police 1 well i hope they don't find out that he went out to defend his rights nothing more. he had nothing on him and was sort of he was targeted by snipers to head shots that go on before nothing like the feel of us. this is the sound that is greeted protesters in recent days police cracking down on crowds with deadly results. protests began last tuesday sparked by anger over unemployment corruption and

a lack of basic services like electricity and water it's a movement without leadership crossing political and sectarian divides. but those who go to parliament wearing suits don't represent us but if 100 of us die next time we will be 1000000 and none of these protestors belong to a religious establishment or party. but the government's response curfews and internet shutdown and promises of eventual reforms the speaker of iraq's parliament invited protesters into talk but it's action they're calling for one influential cleric has demanded new elections. but as authorities respond with violence the flames of discontent continue to burn . are at sports now and in bundesliga soccer byron munich were on
