this is g w news live from berlin tonight a blame game over britain's plans to exit the european union after a phone call today between german chancellor angela merkel and british prime minister boris johnson a leak in london ignited claims that marable told johnson his plans to leave the e.u. will not work is that what she said alaska brit's it analyst also coming up charges

are brought against the man suspected of hijacking a truck and crashing it into a line of cars in germany several people were injured police are now looking for a motive we'll bring you an update on that story and the nobel prize for physics is announced a trio of space researchers wins for their contributions to understanding how the universe has evolved and understanding what earth's role in that universe is. i'm going to have you with us we begin tonight with a question did germany's chancellor really tell britain's prime minister today that a break sit deal probably won't happen well that's what a source close to boris johnson told the british media today that followed a phone call this morning between the prime minister and german chancellor. the
9:02 pm
leak has prompted e.u. council president donald post to warn johnson that breaks it should not become a blame game and u.k. is due to leave the european union at the end of this month. all right so we've also got the head of the european parliament saying their progress has been made in brics and it gives you agents this bill in our resident brags that analysts alex forrest whiting to break things down force are all right we've got the european parliament head saying no progress and we've got that phone call that happened today between johnson and miracle do we know what exactly was said between the 2 leaders no we don't know we know that boris johnson's official spokesman said that the conversation was frank and we know that an unofficial reports of was briefed to the british political media in which they said that and i'm going to medical seas of bricks it did was overwhelmingly unlikely unless
9:03 pm
london except that northern ireland must stay in the e.u. customs union and that's to prevent a hump or to returning between northern ireland and the republic of ireland is not something the british government has said they cannot allow because the u.k. includes northern ireland the cunt have one part of it staying in the customs union so what is this looks like then someone in the prime minister's office leaked information that's supposed to be confidential to the media and what's been the reaction from germany and the european union did to this link where angular macro's spokesperson this of yes this conversation this phone conversation took place early this morning but they will not divulge anything that was said because it was a private conversation many people who know medical and who have watched michael over the years would say this is not the type of language or tone that she would use because she has been very keen to try to show that she would do everything to accommodate the u.k. and to make sure that that is an old. really brooks it but no but till it again who
9:04 pm
is an ally of marco and he is chairman of the german foreign affairs committee tweeted that is no new german position on brics it frankly a deal on the basis of johnson's proposals and till october the 31st has been unrealistic from the beginning and yet the e.u. has been willing to engage blaming others for the current situation is not fair play and many people in brussels seem to believe that this is all part of a blame game let's just take a look at this angry tweet from the e.u. council president donald tusk he tweeted boris johnson directly and said what's at stake is not to winning so stupid to blame game at stake is the future of europe and the u.k. as well as the security and interest of all people you don't want to deal you don't want an extension you don't want to revoke quo vadis which means where are you going you know there are many in particularly brick cities in the u.k.
9:05 pm
who think this is another example of europe doing everything to stop the u.k. from brick sitting and we have to look at this now this is coming from the group levy you we didn't win 2 world wars to be pushed around by a crowd yet i mean this is going a lot has so many people saying that they're using the word kraut you've also got the german chancellor giving what could be understood as a hitler salute or greenie. what's what's behind this but because we're talking about a blame game today we know that breaks it is scheduled to take place october 31st if there is a deal but do you think that someone inside the prime minister's office planted leaked that on purpose today to have us talking about who's blaming who did what we know that boris johnson has one person in particular who's behind him in downing street his special advisor dominic cummings and he is somebody who was behind the very successful. leave the official leave campaign which are so aggressive
9:06 pm
referendum won by those who want to exit the e.u. he is now in downing street prepared to do pretty much anything to get the u.k. out of the e.u. and that is why over and over again we are having boris johnson saying we will leave the e.u. on october the 31st even though i now think and many people now think it is looking increasingly unlikely because of what we've seen today today and over the past few days you are you and many many others say it looks unlikely and yet if you look at boris johnson's twitter feed today we sold time and time again videos with him saying brics it will have been deal or no deal on october 31st now we know that the british parliament has passed legislation that says that cannot happen he has to ask for a delay if there is no deal is the prime minister is he's signaling with things with his twitter feed that he's going to break the wall come up with
9:07 pm
a 1st government has said time and time again they will abide by the little they have to abide by the little you know that has been talked about is there a way for them to get out of this remember the supreme court in the u.k. confirmed what parliament has said that he has 2 requests that delay an extension if he cannot get a deal by next weekend this you council meetings and if there's no deal he has to offer this extension will he have 5 by the middle who are well i would have thought so but what he's trying to do is he's proving to everyone that he will take the u.k. out of the e.u. at some point it just may not be on october the 1st it's amazing there's $23.00 days until the end of this month and here we are talking about a plan that has no support and there hasn't been a request were delayed amazing i was forced winded as always alex thank you. to hong kong the territory's chief executive has not ruled out asking china's military for helping in quoting the territory's ongoing unrest for months
9:08 pm
protesters have staged demonstrations over what they see as growing influence from beijing over similar hong kong but the protests and boston turned violent our correspondent in hong kong once he is berlinger has looked into why businesses have also become a target for demonstrators. protesters attack a china mobile in the past few days dozens of businesses in hong kong have been vandalized during clashes protests this off target companies from the mainland such as the state owned telecom providers the big chinese banks and other industries tied to the beijing government. but there are less obvious choices like this famous us coffee. starbucks has been one of the top targets this one has been vandalized twice 1st they trashed the entrance then and then next day the company

set up these wooden paulose to protect it and then the next day the protesters took down these panels and continue trashing the shop not the hardware i used to meet their far side troops outside of nato and fresh stating that the show time there's consequences to it is to trade a couple months which it in this century to citizens. in online groups protesters post messages explaining that choice of targets on kong starbucks branches are owned by the local cager a mix seems the company drew the wrath of the protesters when the fall and his daughter out of the speech at the u.n. human rights council denouncing the protest it seems has distanced itself from a statement saying she holds no official position in the business but to no avail the logic of conflict has reached on space and this is between the idea of the protest and repercussions on the chinese market many of them are facing a tough choice. for this starbucks brunch the only thing to do now is to renovate
9:10 pm
and hope that they will be targeted at the time. and here's some of the other stories now that are making headlines around the world at u.s. democrats say that they will issue a legal summons to the country's ambassador to the european union borden's only forcing him to appear in court over the impeachment investigation into president donald trump that comes after the trump administration blocked him from testifying about the president's dealings with ukraine today before a congressional committee turkey says it's ready for an offensive against syria's kurds following u.s. president decision to pull troops out of northern syria trump now faces accusations that he has abandoned kurdish forces who were key u.s. allies in the fight against islamic state only 7 the european union countries have agreed to join a scheme to fast track the processing of distribution of migrants who were rescued from the mediterranean interior ministers meeting in luxembourg had hoped to

recruit more countries to join this program germany and france led the effort to satisfy demands by italy and malta that other countries take some of those mines. prosecutors here in germany have charged a man who hijacked a truck and crashed it into a lie. cars with attempted murder 9 people were injured in the incident happened overnight in the western town of limburg the man was quickly detained by police and identified as a syrian national who has been residing in germany since 2015 his motive is a no. this is the truck that rammed into several cars in the western german city of lemberg on monday police believe the person at the wheel pulled the truck's original driver out of his cab there was immediate speculation that the case might be connected to terrorism but federal officials have dismissed that possibility for
9:12 pm
now. my latest information says that at the moment there's no grounds to say there's a terrorist background to this event that is the status at the moment that. the truck's driver was a 32 year old syrian national the man arrived in germany in 2015 and was apparently known to police for assault and drug charges. detained at the wheel of the truck at the moment we are investigating the reason for the collision and of course everything else necessary to determine what happened here just. as police searched 2 apartments last night they collected possible evidence including mobile phones and u.s.b. sticks the investigation is ongoing and prosecutors say they can't yet give any information on a possible motive. are joined by our reporter. in
9:13 pm
limburg where the incident took place good evening to you so let's talk a little bit about the motive here have investigators ruled out terrorism. well we cannot say that they have ruled it out altogether but they seem to be stepping away from this assumption according to what investigators have so far they say that the suspect had no previous links to potentially violent extremists or islamist groups this is why there are no grounds to believe that as of now this was somehow motivated by terror however as we know the suspect was known to police for previous offenses like drug offenses and violent crimes as well as an assault so this is why basically that police are now investigation investigating in all possible directions still looking for what could have been. what do we know that.
9:14 pm
this suspect. yes we definitely have more details today brant well we know that he has a right to germany and 2015 that he's a syrian national we know that he was not granted an asylum status or a refugee status like many people from syria have been granted he was granted something that is called subsidiary protection this status is granted to people who do not qualify as refugees but are still facing risk upon returning to their home countries we also know that this very permanent resident permanent residency residence permit has had expired just earlier this month on october 1st although it is unclear if he had applied in any way to extend it we also know that he was involved in a previous harassment case in another state in germany north rhine-westphalia and
9:15 pm
then he has to 16 year old teenager and later got into a fight with her mother so he was also known to police there with the suspect definitely. with criminal records. in germany thank you. you're watching the news live from berlin still to come 3 science has shared the nobel prize for physics for their research into the evolution of the universe judges say that their work has changed our understanding of the cosmos we're going to find out now in just a moment stick around for that. are back here on earth brazil's president. says the mysterious appearance of oil slicks on his country's coast may be the result of a criminal act it's the oil began washing up on beaches along the northeast coast last month the president and suggested that another country could be to blame but
9:16 pm
he has not said which country that could be. pools of oil covered beaches on brazil's coast for weeks they have been appearing along the shores of the atlantic and the state of mind on the tourist spot a tussle covered in oil and claim this is the result of gross negligence. but. more oil slicks have now been spotted 2000 kilometers for the south of role more than 130 brazilian beaches have been hit. the entire navy in northeast brazil has been mobilized we are trying to dennis what's causing this and where it's coming from. a brazilian t.v. network is investigating whether an accident a refinery belonging to the oil company petrobras may have played a role the site experienced an oil spill at the end of august petrobras which is partly state denied any involvement and claimed the oil may stem from
9:17 pm
a foreign tanka experts in brazil have criticized what they see as a delayed response from authorities. still there was no fast coordinated effort from the authorities in the oil companies. to prevent the oil from reaching the coast. an analysis of the oil will now be conducted with the hope that the results will shed more light on its source well a mystery in thailand wildlife officials they are have discovered the bodies of another 5 wild elephants in a river in cow yelling national park now they made the discovery while investigating how a group of 6 elephants died after plunging into a waterfall over the weekend. these 2 elephants are the lucky ones they survived the fast flowing waters that swept away the rest of their herd officials initially thought 6 elephants died including
9:18 pm
a 3 year old car. it's what we think the elephants were trying to cross over to the other side of the river probably one of the smaller elephants slipped and the adult ones were trying to rescue them but instead was swept away by the water but aerial photos taken during the investigation revealed another 5 bodies 30 say it's the largest number of elephants to die in a single incident. for now we can say that based on these aerial photographs there were 11 dead elephants in total. and only 2 survived. off pictured here before the devastating incident last weekend this herd was part of a population of around 300 wild elephants in the park the waterfall where the elephants died is known as the ravine of hell tile 30 saying they will now look at

walkways over the waterfall or other solutions to prevent a tragedy like this from happening again. it's either something very wonderful or and something horrible that is what one of this year's nobel laureates for physics thought as he got the phone call telling him over that he will be receiving the prize 3 scientists have been named as winners this year the nobel committee says that the prize is being awarded for the trios work on understanding the structure of the universe. it all began when the universe exploded out of a hot dense state nearly 14000000000 years later her for the nobel prize in physics was granted for our understanding of what happened next the royal we did she can move sciences has today decided to award the 2900 new bell prize in physics with one half to james peebles for theoretical discoveries in physical cosmology
9:20 pm
back in the 1960 s. cosmologist was largely a speculative science but since then we've learned a huge amount about the evolution of the universe around us and james peebles was a key figure in that process nearly every step of the way time after time his seminal work in the field has helped scientists interpret traces from its earliest days and also help show the universe is expanding due to 2 of the greatest mysteries in modern physics dark matter and dark energy to other researchers and astronomy were also honored and the other half jointly to michelle and. for the discovery of an exoplanet orbiting a solar types thought back in the early 1990 s. it was still impossible to take the incredibly detailed measurements of a distant star the could show whether it was orbit had by a planet michelle maior and d.d. a kilo developed new cutting edge methods to do so and sparked a revolution in astronomy more than 4000 so-called exoplanets have been pinpointed
9:21 pm
since their 1st pioneering efforts a number that steadily growing. the list now even contains planets that could theoretically be conducive to life circling distant stars the discoveries made by this year's physics laureates have forever changed our perception of the universe around us. to fascinating and help us understand more about exoplanets and how they fit into the nobel prize for physics i'm joined tonight by nikou madhusudan from the institute of astronomy at cambridge university in england dr mudd who's in on his good to have you on the show i understand you have worked with one of the new laureates professor kalo and 1st of all tell us a little bit about that work what makes an exoplanet different from an ordinary plant. hello yeah glad to be here an exoplanet is short form for an extra
9:22 pm
solar planets which is basically a planet orbiting a star that's outside our solar system so there are thousands of players that we know of today which orbiting stars get by in the solar neighborhood around other stars obviously and that's what is an exoplanet and do we know how we did it mr kilo and me show you were how did they discover the 1st exoplanet. so they saw the take neat they used 'd is what is known as the video of the last day at the edge it's this intially then a planet is going around the star this study itself warbles at 0 and at the center of mass of this system. so if you have for size of the last 2 measurements off the start of a long line of sight what you can see is this small motion off this star motion of
9:23 pm
the star at around the center of mass of the system because of the gravitational tug on the star do to the planet now this signal turns out to be extremely small it could be anywhere from a few meters 1st 2nd to tens of meters per 2nd and back then it was the christians of the instrumentalist of. nothing to be good enough to make that sort of a measurement and this team had such as fully made that sort of precise measurements of this last time and so they'd be as subs if they really did the 1st wildly planet detectors if you will do do people such as yourself do you get excited with an exoplanet has a higher wobbly rate or not to me does that signify a t v. it's a it's a huge revolution what that test but so we actually had what excited this small of the wall is because they want the strength of the wall both the amplitude of the
9:24 pm
velocity itself is proportional to the mass of the planet which is the smallest bit planet this small it evolve so to speak so that some of us did it it was a giant planet. put up like better the woman is going to be much smaller well dr i have to ask you when we're talking about exoplanets and their wobbly factor do you ever ask yourself if one of these planets maybe has extra terrestrial wife on them do you think we are alone or do you think there's something else there. i would bet that there is something out there and it's actually very unlikely because your phone lots of planets that are small and could potentially life we haven't found life yet but they have the right conditions but life to be present and it's only a matter of time in my view in the future that we find something i think a lot of people with agree we've just got to make sure we can hold on to the wife we've got here on this planet in the meantime mr magoo said on with cambridge

university the night talking about these new nobel laureate in physics professor thank you thank you let me get all right sports news now the tennis and the shanghai masters where roger federer has advanced to the 3rd round after beating albert ramos the no less federer needed just 86 minutes to brush aside the spaniard in straight sets and never faced a break point on his way 286276 victory italian fabio phone stay was a little tough it took him 3 grueling sets to be britain's andy murray the victory keeps his chances for finance with the season and the a.t.p. finals aloft. this is d.w. news and these are our top story european parliament head david sass elise says there's been no progress in breaks in talks after a meeting today with the u.k.
