a man was killed as a donna combat shop also came under attack. i was standing right in the entrance and saw an older woman pass the shop by suddenly a man came up behind her dressed in a helmet and army things or at least very military looking. he was holding a rifle and had a balaclava on and he tried to throw what looked like a hand grenade into the shop. but also in the hunt but it bounced off the door frame and went off right in front of the old woman with a really loud bang. and he raised the rifle and began shooting. police and shots were also find in landsberg a town 15 kilometers from halla but it wasn't clear whether the 2 incidents were related soon after police arrested a person outside talor who is reported to be a 27 year old white german male with a rightwing extremist background. our correspondent congressman is on the scene

in hanna here's what he told me earlier about the affected congregation in the city . in terms of the synagogue itself we know that it was a full congregation some 70 to 80 people were there for prayers because today of course is yom kippur one of the most holy days in fact the most holy day on the jewish calendar to put that number into perspective the in community the jewish community within that synagogue is estimated to be around 700 so if you think about 70 to 80 people that's about 10 percent of the population as we heard the gunman was unable to gain access to the synagogue so it could have been certainly much worse. and here with me in the studio now is dee political correspondent we do you know a good to see what do you now understand you've been speaking to someone who was inside the synagogue at the time tell me about this person and tell me about their

experience what they told you have a chance earlier to speak rather extensively with amusing young jewish american he and his wife have been living in berlin for quite some time they run a nonprofit jewish organization to try to attract young jews to the community to reinvigorate jewish life in berlin and in germany and they actually led a delegation of about 20 people but clear about 12 americans down to to support this small aging community in the exact to be there for young people who are and he said they were in the middle of the torah service high point of the young people or service when they heard a boom and the only security guard there at the synagogue a private guard for the community he called the police immediately he said to me and then both he and the leaders of the synagogue quite quickly. rushed everybody upstairs and keep their heads down put them to a safer safer safer spot and that's when somewhere in that timeline he heard the

pops of what was presumably the gunfire so it was a very scary moment he said he has a lot to be lucky for he said but they went back after only about 10 minutes of seeking shelter to continue to continue the services i mean it must have been i mean as he said it was a terrifying experience and yet you know he also seemed to evoke a fairly orderly reaction from the congregation which sort of begs the question why they prepared for something like this yeah i mean he's only a visitor he can actually speak to what they are not prepared for but it definitely seemed that the people there knew what you do knew how to take action and that this security guard knew what to do when he was seeing on the security camera this person outside trying to get in with. what it seems to be it was homemade explosive devices and homemade weaponry. what happens now i mean we we have. we have word zooming out to hear what the head of the jewish community here in
