really think for a kind of america that he couldn't get through the door and that like a much bigger tragedy was. didn't happen the synagogue door didn't open but the attack odenton and his gun too was passers by killing another man at a restaurant. i don't get it i was standing right in the entrance and saw an older woman pass the shop by suddenly a man came up behind her dressed in a helmet and army things or at least very military looking. he was holding a rifle and had a balaclava on the hunt he tried to throw what looked like a hand grenade into the shop. that's also been a hunt but it bounced off the door frame and went off right in front of the old woman with a really loud. and he raised the rifle and began shooting. soon after the authorities arrested a suspect outside a holler 27 year old german citizen has a right to be constrained his background. spent 10 years villages were held in

front of synagogues across the country chester anger america showed his support to the jewish community. little by of the unfortunately t.j. on your holiest day we have witnessed something terrible over 100 people have lost their lives there was an attack on jews in germany even though it's not my goal and that of the government is to do everything possible to ensure that you can live in safety but this stage shows us that this is not so simple and that we must do even more. in the wake of the attack many questions remain not least what could have been done to prevent it from happening. our political correspondent simon young is following this story for us simon what's the latest on the investigation and the attack where police are continuing their

investigation on the ground they've searched several properties including the apartment where this man was supposed to have been living with his mother they've also recovered a vehicle one of the vehicles used in the attack and we believe that they're continuing to follow up the possibility there could be other people involved were people this suspect had contact with so those are the sort of key lines of investigation at the moment as well as trying to obviously understand his motives well the gunman tried to attack a packed synagogue talking about motives he is apparently bent on killing jews what does this tell us about the problem of anti-semitism in germany today well i think it all depends on exactly what his motivation turns out to be but it's pretty clear from the manifesto the posted on the internet that he was quite ready to

kill jews and target and he talked about targeting known white specifically jews. as well as other groups so this is clearly a hate crime the police are treating it as such and anti semitic hate crime is a problem in germany it's been growing for a while jewish groups say that it's an increasing threat there were more than 1500 anti semitic incidents reported to police last year all followed up by police 69 of them violent assaults i think this killing in the synagogue next to the synagogue and how the targeting of that synagogue that goes further than anything we've seen . really for decades so this is a troubling new level of anti semitic crime how is germany's political leadership responding to this well they've been responding as we've seen johnson americal goings. great to a synagogue yesterday after news of this came out to show solidarity other political leaders are traveling to how to speak to the jewish community there and

show that looking at this there have been calls for politicians to take direct action giving police more powers more powers to do more and there are also calls which i think will be heeded to give more direct police protection to synagogues it's done in some of the larger cities across germany but it may be that all jewish institutions need to be routinely protected by police in order to prevent this kind of horrific attack thank you very much t w political correspondent. now to some of the other stories making headlines around the world today in ecuador protesters have clashed with riot police in the capital quito it was the 6th day of nationwide protest following cuts to fuel subsidies and other austerity measures the government has declared a state of emergency and nearly 700 people have been arrested. police in honduras have fired tear gas at protesters demanding the resignation of president kwan all

and turkey belong to nato it's caution. i count on turkey to act with restraint. and sure that any action it may take in northern syria is proportionate and much should. we must not jeopardize the games we have made together against over common enemy isis but the residents of northeast syria aren't counting on words to save them they're escaping the border towns by any means possible to some it's only been a few years since they fled from the advance of i asked now they're back on the road with no clear destination t w correspondent yulia han is standing by for us in istanbul and here in the studio is our foreign policy editor save save our thank you very much to both of you to tell us more about the turkish military offensive that is now underway how is that

expected to unfold. well the turkish army launched a ground offensive a lot just hours after the operation started with airstrikes and shelling since then some fierce clashes have been reported from border towns in northeast syria so that 6 pack to to continue today the turkish army get support from an anchor a backed syrian opposition fighter group called the syrian national army so in terms of manpower and equipment the turkish side is clearly outnumbering outgunning the syrian kurdish fighters but these fighters there in northeast syria have also said they are determined to fight back until the very end to defend the territory so this is likely not going to be a swift and smooth military operation there but rather another stage in syria's 8 year war. so the kurdish forces in northeastern syria they are holding

thousands of fighters in detention what is going to happen to those fighters well that's a big question and that's also a big concern us said will president trump said it's now europe and turkey has responsibility to take care of these fighters and the families not just the fighters but also thousands of their families women and children are being held the big concern is what happens just like you were saying what happens when why p.g. has to pull out its fighters there to bring them to fight against turkey so a lot of europeans and of course the u.s. is worried that. the camps might be just freed and that's why u.s. actually took 2 british jihadi out of syria and these are the most notorious ones if you recall back in the 24 to 2015 there were a lot of videos about beheadings of captured hostages and these are the people that

u.s. took out right now but it's just very few number ok turkey says it is planning to create a buffer zone in northern syria and move 2000000 refugees there from turkey how viable is that plan all the refugees in turkey willing to go. well turkey has huge plans that i mean they're planning to build residential areas hospitals police stations schools which suggests that turkey really has a plan to stay for a longer period there in northeast syria this is of course going to be costly and i guess the question of who's going to pay for it has not been fully answered yet of course there have been syrians who were returning voluntarily to areas under turkish control there in north in syria but i've also talked to many people here many syrians here and it's somebody who say they can never ever imagine going back

to a country where bushell assad is still somehow in charge and this is how it looks like off for 8 years that this man is not going to go anywhere so no matter if this is called a safe zone no matter whether it's in fact saved many syrians can't imagine going back ok we've talked about the turks and the kurds and syria to some degree the americans what about the europeans what are the europeans european leaders saying about all that well europeans are very concerned that the e.u. released declarations calling on turkey to seize this unilateral military action also german foreign minister condemned turkey's military operation and because they're worried that this is going to further destabilize the zone and of course europe is worried that there might be another humanitarian crisis there might be more refugees on the way ok let's leave it there for now. in istanbul thank you very much to you both. and just reminder the top story we're
