royal swedish academy which makes the award so the scandal rock field has ation and that is why its mission laureates that would be to be announced shortly the swedish academy awards the literature prize. and each year the nobel committee receives around $200.00 nominations from across the world 8 authors have made it onto the shortlist for this year just a reminder that we will get to awards this year one for 20 $9001.00 for $28.00 team now there are strict secrecy rules covering the winners so really we have no idea in the ones who would be next literature laureates will be. just point out that so far 9 nobel prizes have been awarded this week and all of the glorious have been made and. so on this also in the chair of the nobel committee of the swedish academy these days are so excited to see how people react to the prize the.

history speaking in swedish south continue we'll keep our eye on that but chavez is and is also in the chair with the nobel committee off the swedish academy. as i was saying. that's like we can go back to him he's now talking in english. must. see. yourself. during. this. early. hour or so. for. many. little bits of the probational order.

to. ricky has explored at the periphery of this specific city the old human experience . no but then i hope it's of a new to be judged no better for me to you then i was told to fit it emitted a. fixed exposure committee and it got to be at that it fresh log and we've got all come to go through some bullshit today of this little bit because if they did that attitude ok good i'm in. it it was logan's. the nobel prize is being prepared by an external ended committee this time it has consisted in 4 members of

critic. at the on top of nobel committee as they are the most commonly roads because of a process or the sort of. a penalty we have members of the nobel committee would know describe the process and also questions. and the computer. been accused. of this all right but coming from stockholm with that action has just happened i'm now joined by my colleague from the culture department current house state hey karen good to have on so we have you just i mean that's right we've just mentioned when is i mean is this something that we're expecting ok well. it was definitely one of the ones that was being touted to be a winner i'm a bit surprised at the choice of her simply because i don't know the way i look at

it she's a a relatively young novelist playlist novelist very much a national hero in that country she's the winner of the man booker prize last year for her novel sleights ok very humorous and also very unconventional novel structurally a silly 57 years old so actually she's got an awfully long time to perhaps perhaps it really was with that novel in mind so no surprises there i have to say that if it's peter hunter which you have assured me it is the austrian writer. i find that i find that very surprising given that i was hoping that the academy was going to probably clean up its act a little bit this year and there was this announcement by anders olsen already over a month ago that diversity was going to be a significant priority this year and i don't see a lot of diversity happening there because obviously he's austrian he's a male he's white there are many many other authors if you want to look across the

scope of world literature and i think there were a number of others the bookies are certainly counting on ok so i mean there is there is the whole other thing here that this is and president announcement in a way it's the 1st time i've had to when it's being announced in a single yet talked a little bit more about that ok well that was a situation in late 2017 where the no who's the french swedish husband of one of the academy members her name is cutting off austin's and was accused by a very large group of women of sexual assault and exploitation so in the wake of this was all of course coming in the wake of the need to movement and hence it it got a lot of press at the time the academy tried to keep it quiet and sort of within its ranks for for quite a while which was a very unfortunate way of handling it because then it led to a slew of resignations which meant that the group the the deciding group didn't have a quorum anymore so they were actually forced to postpone the decision. has

since been convicted he's serving 2 and a half year sentence for rape and he was a big name in sweden's cultural scene and ran an arts club and there was apparently sort of a lot of abusive subsidies academy subsidies he ran that club with his wife so there were monies that were flowing to that she was also accused of actually having leaked names to him winners which he then further and. as such of course allowed a lot of very serious betting and large sums to be wanted in the betting. part i don't know if this is is if it is a fair question and he said you'd have to answer that but given i mean we are looking at an academy that's had to sort of clean up its image right it's had to do it on image repair i mean the winners have been announced today what does that tell us about that if it and what i mean is that something well you know if you'd asked me before we knew the names i would have said that a lot of critics are very very skeptical as to whether they can clean up their act
1:08 pm
with these choices i mean they've you know they've chosen one woman i mean there's only been 14 women chosen so she will be number 15 i'm going to look in the entire history of the award was 1st given out in 1000 or one i believe. so i can't say that this is going to be highly convincing of efforts to clean up their act they also they have indicated that they want to do things for instance the you mentioned they brought in outside members of the jury so that was an unprecedented move they want to review the lifetime appointment for academy members. they would get that chair and then they could sit on it forever and if they just didn't feel like coming in they didn't and that chair was never so they had a lot of kind of lazy order members who were probably also not thinking in terms of a really wide spectrum world that's for sure of you they want to get away from this euro centrism. and they also want to come up with a code of conduct for all the academy members obviously to avoid some of the issues that we've seen that have that have just absolutely jam shaken

a globally recently once globally respected institution to its foundations saying staff well car thank you we'll talk a. little bit more about that. to other news now and germany is in shock cillian shock after an anti semitic attack on a synagogue on the holiest day in the jewish calendar kippur the day off atonement a heavily armed gunman tried to force his way into the building in the eastern german city on wednesday but was prevented from entering he then shot and killed a bystander in the street before killing another person at a nearby kebab shop. a city under siege does images filmed by residents yesterday and show a man dressed in kumba type climbing out of a car and firing off a series of shots before driving away a few blocks away i witnesses recount how woman was shot dead as she was walking
1:10 pm
need a synagogue of the press there was a huge bang and then someone tried to get into the jewish cemetery he fired several times with a shotgun at the cemetery at the door. and then the woman came along the one who was shot she just came along from the tram stop quite by chance. the synagogue was food when it was attacked young people hold this day of the jewish calendar had brought together between 70 and 80 worshippers. and american fresh air arrived in germany was one of them i think the energy was was fairly calm given the situation today i feel more kind of. just because people were killed but yesterday it was more about just kind of being really think for a kind of america that you couldn't get through the door and that like
1:11 pm
a much bigger tragedy was. didn't happen the synagogue door didn't open but the attacker then turned his gun to his passes by killing a not a man not a restaurant. i don't give a damn i'm going to i was standing right in the entrance and saw an older woman pass the shop. suddenly a man came up behind her dressed in a helmet and army things or at least very military looking. he was holding a rifle and had a balaclava on and he tried to throw what looked like a hand grenade into the shop. that's also going to hunt but it bounced off the door frame and went off right in front of the old woman with a really loud. computer is that he raised the rifle and began shooting. soon after it is arrested a suspect outside a holler 27 year old german citizen has a right to be constrained his background. spontaneous villages were held in front of synagogues across the country chance of anger america showed his support to the

jewish community. the way of the unfortunately t.j. on your holiest day we have witnessed something terrible i want you people have lost their lives there was an attack on jews in germany. my goal and that of the government is to do everything possible to insure that you can live in safety but this stage shows us that this is not so simple and that we must do even more. in the wake of the attack many questions remain not least what could have been done to prevent it from happening right for more we have. line in heller and i'll call correspondent tom aspire is with me in the studio a comment to start with you there so as we understand it community leaders are visiting where you are right now tell us more. that's right i mean hollow
1:13 pm
really is ground 0 right now in germany many prominent politicians and leaders are arriving here at the synagogue behind me where those events took place about 24 hours ago most recently was german president. he arrived and participated in a short vigil with jewish community leaders and members of the synagogue he then went inside he visited the jewish cemetery which is just here behind me and then we believe he went into the synagogue itself where we have a closed door meeting with members of that synagogue he is just a part in fact right now we're awaiting the interior minister horses a home where he is a expected to arrive any minute many politicians leaders including the israeli ambassador expected here of course will be showing solidarity not only with the victims but with the jewish community itself and also facing many questions probably about the safety of the jewish community in germany as well as the rise of
1:14 pm
far right attacks in germany as well as stand by call in to bring in tom you're following the investigation what more do we know one important element in the investigation is that it's being led by federal prosecutors or no not regional prosecutors as is sometimes the case but federal prosecutors and this really gives a very important element of that it shows the importance of this event from the perspective of the investigators one lead that they're now trying to follow is whether this person acted i don't know know whether there were other people involved in one way or another you know the words trying to identify what possible connections he might have had which you can then need to more clearly establish what could have been the motive we already heard from one additions saying that it was on the semantic nature that it was a probably far right extremist part of toadies obviously trying to find out much more about the case in order to come out with something more concrete and we're expecting by the way a press statement by federal prosecutors will. then give more information about the
1:15 pm
specific case and about the investigation that carry call i mean thomas thomas points out here you've heard the german authorities talking about the the anti semitic motive possibly behind this attack how the people of hell and the jewish community in particular coping with this. well we've been speaking with members of the jewish community here in hollow all day many of them of course expressing shock dismay sadness at what took place here many also just simply concerned about what they say and what they feel is a rise in attacks against the jewish community a rise in anti-semitic violence of course the statistics bear that out as well we've seen a 20 percent rise last year in germany in a reports of anti-semitic incidents in fact between 20172018 there was nearly a doubling of violent incidents against the community as well we've also seen some activists here anti-semitic activists handing out blue and white pins as
1:16 pm
a sign of solidarity there's also some questions among the broader community in germany about whether the security measures were strong enough here in holland there was simply one private security guard who was on duty yesterday he was monitoring the situation through a security camera and of course we know now today that it was simply a very secure and locked door that prevented any further violence from happening. thomas just i mean what we're talking about since world war 2 ended in this country and we're learning that lot of people in the jewish community are living in fear just how serious is the problem of anti semitism in this country and. with it it is extremely serious i would say given germany's history given germany's historical responsibility given the responsibility that german authorities on the german state feel towards jewish life and jewish communities here in the country and that reflects the way that authorities have been dealing with is the fact that the
1:17 pm
president himself went to khalid just now a scholar just mentioned to not only stress well what he believes is important in this case both to show that the state has a responsibility when it comes to jewish life in the country so this just reveals the importance of this investigation and when we look at what authorities are doing one concrete measure. but it in particular took since 2008 was the establishment and the appointment of an anti semitism commissioner who is the person now in charge of dealing with all these cases and also being sort of the focal point and the point of communication between jewish communities and the government as well and he will be highly as well will show his respects and also updating people and watch his investigations are doing ok thomas sparrow. thank you. civilians off being more than serious turkish troops advance into kurdish controlled areas the attack began with their strikes followed by

together against other common enemy forces but the residents of northeast syria aren't counting on words to save them they're escaping the border towns by any means possible to some it's only been a few years since they fled from the advance of ai ass now they're back on the road with no clear destination. for more on this and help joins me in studio he's a middle east expert at the of bettles munched official here in berlin and welcome . thanks for being with me so so the take you say is it effective he wants to create a safe zone in syria where it can relocate some 2000000 syrian refugees currently in turkey just how viable is that. look there are there are in the regional policy of turkey 2 major objectives why this military invasion is is putting forward put
1:21 pm
forward one is to avoid that any form of could have autonomy is created in close to the borders of turkey because in the southeast of turkey most of the people that are living there have. secondly. the one wants to play a major role in the whole resettlement of syria and wants to show military strength in the region. russia for example iran and the other regional players ok so let's let's look at what this offensive will do we have for example could forces in the east and syria holding what i.s.i. says that its. what then happens to them there you know it to turkey is holding in the whole northern part of syria also so-called sunni arab regions in the area of it live then they have already captured areas around of rain and now this is the 3rd invasion into the north and eastern part which is mainly. populated here the

kurdish militias have detained more than 12000 suspected of as fighters and their families in so-called 7 prisons and camps this is a big unser tenet kristie nobody knows what's going to happen with them if they could can flee or if if the reshape of the eye is terrorism can raise again the problem is that that this invasion in this respect creates a lot of insults hannity's these are the i as fighters and their families on the one hand but also refugees in the total on the other because the main objective of the one in this invasion is to reshuffle the demography of the region that means to settle sunni arabs which are already refugees in southeastern turkey in a quarter of a populated area north east and syria ok so. the e.u. has come out criticizing ticky in fact we've we've we've heard voices cautioning
1:23 pm
restraint but how much sway does the e.u. have here the e.u. has launched this morning joint declaration which is criticizing harshly the turkish invasion saying it's creating a lot of and so tendencies and instability is already in syria and in the region was a sort of volatile there is no talk about sanctions or other practical measures against turkey we need to know the e.u. and turkey is a very fragile relationship on the one hand turkey is member of nato turkey is a session candidate of the e.u. turkey needs the e.u. very much turkey turkey and the other one is now in a very heavy financial economic crisis there's a lot of inflation lot of criticism the power is shifting away from party so he's a big concern and he tries to mobilize now all national and military forces to show strength in order to push away. the attention from the social economic
