everything that he needed the ammunition and the hate prosecutors here in germany you say the 27 year old man in custody intended to wide stream a mass murder from inside a crowded synagogue tonight and i witness tells me what she saw and heard when the door of that synagogue was all that stood between prayers and a massacre i'm burnt off in berlin this is the day. it's been like millions of people in germany i am shocked and depressed. plus again that what we saw yesterday was terrorism. isn't milicic not only danny escaped a terrible attack on the people in the senate on the knuckles but that and. there could have been many more victims the public is are they said if you don't see the

policeman it doesn't mean the police on this or you have us this week that underestimate the situation public can't foresee everything because it. is not just any must ensure that we better protect the citizens. that i think that's our ships in this is kate racism and anti semitism have no place in our country. also coming up a turkey's president and a 2 front war yesterday he sent troops into northern syria today he warned the europe to butt out threatening an invasion but not with soldiers using shrug but if you try to describe our price and it's an invasion with a cutie then we'll open the door still this is done and send 3600000 migrants to you. it's as simple as that.

to our viewers on p.b.s. in the united states and all around the world welcome we begin today on what could have been the day after a massacre prosecutors here in germany have confirmed that a 27 year old suspect in custody had planned an attack on a synagogue yesterday in the eastern town of hala yesterday was the jewish holy day of young kapoor there were between 70 and 80 people inside the synagogue and the man was armed with explosives and several weapons including a homemade rifle he fired bullets and molotov cocktails at the synagogues locked door trying to get in but the door held police arrested the man as he tried to get away but not before he shot dead a man and a woman apparently in frustration the chancellor here in germany and leaders of the european union have condemned yesterday's attack the german government bailing to increase security at synagogues across the country our coverage continues tonight with this report on the day after
2:05 am
a city in shock hala is grieving after wednesday's pretend attack. visiting the scene german president time for to steinmeyer spoke of his horror and revulsion at the acts of a deluded right wing extremist. you see them on board and think you can go history warns us but the present demands we act on the whole don't so i can. win this now we must take a stand through our relationship with the jewish community. didn't you just mentioned. chancellor angela merkel attended a vigil in berlin on wednesday evening but she chose to wait until thursday to make a statement on the attack expressing her shock and sadness she promised a strong response from the state so i let you know 1st and foremost this news that the representative of the states and i am standing before you as one of them we must use all the means available to us to take actions against hatred and violence
2:06 am
there must be no absolutely no tolerance for that the get the toddler hands. on wednesday a german citizen identified as the far right extremist tried to force his way into his synagogue around 70 people were gathered that on the holiest day in the jewish calendar the attack of fired shots at the bolted door but failed to break through. unable to carry out the massacre he had planned for the synagogue the attackers shot 2 other people as he fled before police were able to detain him police say they had no formal knowledge of the 27 year old he streamed his actions live on the internet and uploaded a manifesto full of anti semitic rhetoric stefan bay was taken by helicopter to the city of cards who are where the federal public prosecutor has taken over the investigation it's called the attack an act of terrorism the suspect was carrying a large arsenal of weapons should be
2:07 am
a bit off not. you he was heavily armed with multiple weapons which he appeared to have built himself with and a large quantity of explosives 4 kilograms of explosives were found in his vehicle alone. into some magnificent. halla is left stricken with grief but also anger that police were unable to stop an anti semitic hate crime that claimed 2 lifes. w.'s corn has been joins me now from the hollow where candles and flowers have been planes to remember the people who were killed yesterday. we're starting to get a more detailed picture of the suspect from yesterday's attack what we know tonight . i mean just to reiterate some of those facts that we heard in the piece the suspect is being referred to in the german media as stefan b.
2:08 am
he's a 27 year old german male essentials being described as a loner somebody with few friends in fact he lived a few kilometers outside of hala with his mother his father who divorced his mother he says that his son was someone who spent a lot of time on the computer he would play a lot of video games was certainly immersed in an online community someone had to have many friends outside of the computer we know now that he wanted to carry out a massacre we heard about those homemade weapons including 4 kilos of explosives we do believe now according to reports that he made in many of those weapons with plans that he found online and in fact part of the reason why he may have lifestream to this attack was because he wanted others to follow his example in terms of making their own weapons and perhaps carrying out more violence that way we do believe that in terms of his ideology the suspects was a white nationalists that he wanted to inflict damage on not only jews but muslims
2:09 am
and blacks and other minorities as well we do know a pretty good picture of who this person was because of the digital traces that he did leave so the streaming of that attack as well as the manifesto that we've heard about jewish leaders today they ripped into the police and the government for not providing adequate security outside of that synagogue yesterday what was the response has there been a response. yeah that's right i mean it's fairly standard practice to have official police presence outside of any german synagogue outside of any jewish community center in germany even jewish schools the synagogue here though apparently did not have that police presence there was a lone security guard a private security guard who was simply monitoring a camera we know now brant that it was simply a locked door that prevented a much larger massacre the jewish community speaking out in criticizing that lack
2:10 am
of security we did hear at a press conference today interior minister horst as a whole for saying that there needs to be higher security and that there will be higher security making that promise at jewish synagogues and community centers in germany in fact he also promised more resources to battle far right to extremism already promising 100 more employees to help fight that battle here in germany it seemed like a pretty stark admission from him in fact if you listen to his words that the growing threat of far right extremism is something that germany will have to deal with and perhaps will need to take a little bit more seriously definitely a sober message today to the use cordesman force here in hala thank you. well my 1st guest tonight was inside that synagogue in hollow during yesterday's attack christina feist is here with me tonight christina welcome to the day i have
2:11 am
to say you know you impressed as all by being able to talk about what happened yesterday so soon after the event you've been holding up today. i'm honestly not sure of oh thank you for having me here i've been talking about this basically all day not only was friends with people who were there but with me it was family with friends that knew i was there also with journalists and it helps a lot. a lot to talk about these things because it helps me to sort of like rationalize what actually happened and i think like it still hasn't really sunk in i still don't really understand every time i see media reports every time i see pictures i'm like wait i was there is actually happened this is not like it's not a small thing it's not a joke has really happened so i think it's going to take awhile until it really hits me but for now what did happen to me you were there yesterday for services for young people who are you were inside the synagogue. what happened yeah exactly so i
2:12 am
went to hala with a group from berlin for a young kid for to celebrate for the high is too much holiday in holland with a local community and we actually met at the synagogue at like 8 30 in the morning approximately we started service morning service at 9 o'clock and we were right in the middle service it's a fairly long morning service because of young people or because of the holiday and we wear out actually right in the middle of reading torah when so what i saw and heard was like one explosion followed by a smoke like a cloud of smoke that i saw through the window another explosion another cloud of smoke and then for some seconds like everyone was silent and confused because no one really understood what was happening and then all of a sudden things move super fast what happened in the main there. i understand there was a security guard inside the synagogue who rushed to barricade the door were you aware of the yes so what actually happened so that security guard you mention is actually a member of the community too and what actually happened is that like so there's
2:13 am
a surveillance camera outside and the strain inside so you can see what's happening on the street and the cantor who was leading the prayer he had for some reason when he turned like sort of around he had a perfect view of the screen so he saw what was happening on the street so he saw that there was an armed man outside in full gear i had i didn't see the screen so i actually was like really thanks to the cantor who had an impressive and amazing reaction who immediately understood the situation the media understood was happening look at the screen turn around and told everyone to like leave the room go to the back room and then actually go upstairs and get down on the floor stay away from the windows meanwhile other people from the community were barricaded in the front door someone else from our group was blocking a barricade in the back door i locked the middle door there were already like tables in front of that. you were helping to keep the door closed while i locked it and tables were in front of it so that was like not that much is
2:14 am
a collection to put it that way but yes it's like you know you switch into that kind of mode where you're not really thinking about what exactly is happening but more like what needs to be done and what needs to be done is like to get people into a safe room and then sort of like make sure that we're ok when you when you walked into the synagogue yesterday morning what we understand is that there were there were new police officers there yesterday i mean did you did you think that there was not enough security to do that even cause your mind it did it did because we actually arrived the day before and we met at the synagogue on tuesday night too because in for is also a day of fast so we started that on tuesday night all together at the synagogue and i remember i went to the synagogue and i was like you know i'm used to this from berlin every synagogue as police police officers and from the. and i remember i was walking on the street in holland i was like well never mind whatever number this is the synagogue is where the policemen are and there were none did you ask anybody why there were any police officers we did and i also like what also surprised me
2:15 am
was that there is actually a sign on the wall that says synagogue which i love that is there but it's also surprising it's so obvious and we asked actually i was surprised there were no policemen no obvious security and the response we got was like they apparently have the community the local manager has been trying with the police to get them to protect them in some way i don't know to like half of these officers outside at least for the holidays and apparently they have managed so far the door now we understand we've got a there's a picture of the road here meaning the gunman he tried to break through that door and he could not. see what goes through your mind to be that door was the one thing in between you and you and what could have been you know your last day yesterday yeah what do you what do you think when you see that door it's i mean seeing the picture now is that so i actually walked to the synagogue this morning and i remember in front of the door waiting for my friend to open another door to let me
2:16 am
in and i remember i saw this and it hit me right then i mean that's a wooden door nothing else it's a wooden door and frankly i have absolutely no idea how that saves us it's a wooden door it's a it's exactly i don't i really can't grasp how a plain simple wooden door. saved us i honestly i don't know it's a miracle it really is and looking at this is like it's surreal i mean there are people who say that germany now is. is too dangerous for jewish people to walk in public with a kid on for example. what do you say about that do you feel you feel after you after yesterday do you feel that this is a dangerous place to be someone like you to be jewish. so 1st of all this is not new this is this is the status quo like it's that it has been it's been like that for years and decades this is nothing new sadly. the old story about
2:17 am
not being like able to walk on the streets with a keep our showing i know that i know that story by heart because every friday every saturday i go to school and every friday and every saturday when i leave the premises of the synagogue and i have male friends sort of close by i check of their wearing a kippah and if they are i tell them because we all know that it's just super dangerous to leave this in the premises of the synagogue wearing a keep out in the open so that is one response to that question the other responses like of course is dangerous here. is dangerous. to sort of live openly as a jew i don't wear a keep i don't wear a star of david so i'm like i'm not obvious i'm ok also i refuse to be scared that's another another perspective but of course it's dangerous and everyone knows but nothing's happening well you're definitely a courageous person for coming in to talk about it and sharing so much with this
2:18 am
too especially so soon after the event christina fice christine thank you very much it's really important to you would have to say thank you thank you thank you. now the kurds are fighting for the land just so you understand they're fighting for their land and as somebody wrote in a very very powerful article today. they didn't help us in the 2nd world war they didn't help us with no normandy as an example they mention names of different battles they were there but they're there to help us with their land and that's a different thing d.-day and the kurds in northern syria what you just heard was the u.s. president today attempting to justify his decision to withdraw u.s. forces from northern syria that decision opened the way for turkey which has long wanted to rid the border area of the kurds it appears that is exactly what is now happening on the 2nd day of turkey's military operation there are reports of
2:19 am
thousands of people fleeing their homes the death toll we understand has surpassed $100.00 the u.s. president has again threatened to obliterate the turkish economy if this campaign in northern syria goes quote off limits what does that mean. want to discuss that a lot more tonight i'm joined now by daniel baer then was u.s. ambassador to the o. s. c.e. under president obama he was also the deputy assistant secretary of state stand is in denver in the state of colorado where he is now running for the u.s. senate dan it's good to have you on the show welcome. what did you make of president trump saying. we're basically asking what did the kurds ever do for us on d.-day. well i mean it certainly goes down as one of the stranger things that he said in the in international politics of the no more sensible than anything else that he says i would point out that president trump didn't do anything to help the
2:20 am
country that he served that he could have served in vietnam when he was drafted but you know i think it's a weird thing to bring up and i don't know what made him think that it was a the right thing to bring up because we're not in 194945 we're in the year 2019 and president trump has just made a terrible decision that is going to have consequences for many years to come we've heard that the pentagon was caught off guard by truck decision and now there's talk of reasserting. a u.s. military presence in northern syria do you think that would even be be possible now . you know i think the military planners would have to answer that question but i think you know the fact that the pentagon was caught off guard and as were many and present trends on white house and foreign policy team just speaks to the fact that this president has pursued a foreign policy whether in this part of the world or elsewhere that is really all
2:21 am
knee jerk responses without any kind of strategy and so this was an action without a strategic plan or objective and i think you know if you talk to the experts in many ways turkey didn't waste any time understanding that the president trying to given them a green light the invasion has begun it's hard to put an invasion back back in the back and so you know i think the cost that he's on the ground have trained changed radically in the last 72 hours you used to be the investor to the organization for security and cooperation in europe today the turkish president everyone he sent a threat to the e.u. if europeans dared to criticize his operation in northern syria i want to take a listen to part of what he said today. you can use a good white cop luckiness should all say it again. museum shrug they call it but if you try to describe how it is an invasion then we'll open the door still is just and send 3600000 migrants up with agendas it's as simple as that then you'll
2:22 am
move to says that i go in there to. then what did you think when you heard that threat and what should europe be doing as a result of that. well the europeans have been working with turkey now for you know the better part of a decade on managing the challenges of migration and obviously turkey is a crucial partner in and sometimes a very difficult one i'm not sure i think my main impression is just how difficult it is and how you know how terrible it is to be using people who are fleeing hardship as bargaining chips or as threats these are human beings they're not a threat and i think you know everyone has had a strained relationship with europe and a complicated relationship with the u.s. not least because of the growing authoritarianism that we see in turkey since he took over turkey is also a member of nato a lot of the e.u.
2:23 am
countries are also members of nato the u.s. is as well is this how nato partners are supposed to treat each other. you know this is unusual behavior for a nato partner turkey is in many ways an unusual nato partner it's in a different it is geographically more proximate to the more difficult part of the world and so it has legitimate security concerns which other new don't partners need to make sure that we take account of and respect but it also has not served itself well in terms of its engagement with with its fellow nato partners and i would say that everyone's comments today are another example of that not not the way that one would expect the leader of a country in the alliance to speak certainly publicly to other members of the alliance and all of this is happening with an impeachment cloud hanging over the white house by norty leader in the u.s. senate today chuck schumer he talked about that here's part of what he said today
2:24 am
take a listen it should not have come to this but republicans in congress by repeatedly demonstrating that they are unwilling to hold president trump accountable when he does something wrong have established a permission structure for president trump's reckless actions in syria a permission structure to be reckless then what do you think is that structure is it is that structure about to crumble. you know i think it's too soon to tell but certainly you know i basically the exposer of the confession by president trump his terrible behavior either be the president of ukraine and trying to get the ukrainian government to take action that would help president trump of his reelection and his confession of that has has been the immediate cause of the impeachment inquiry snapping into action i think what we've seen in the last couple
2:25 am
weeks is really striking which is that although impeachment was not polling particularly strongly or that a majority of americans were not in favor of impeachment say 2 or 3 months ago we've seen that switch and we've seen a huge swing in the polls and i think part of that is because a couple months ago you know we all knew that president trump was a disaster and that he was making the world less safe and hence his actions were damaging to our democracy and to america's leadership in the world but impeachment seemed like another complication in an already complicated and terrible scene i think more and more people are recognizing that impeachment is actually a way of clarifying and being clear about the wrongness of the president's behavior as well as several of his cabinet officials who are also who seem to have committed impeachable offenses and impeachment is now possibly clarifying and simplifying rather than complicating and another bird the i think it was today the 1st fox news poll showed that 50 percent of americans are now in favor of impeachment and
2:26 am
removing the president in that struck us fox news poll showing that half of americans want to see trump go is a but i want to pick up what you just said there a lot of people think that the impeachment process just muddies the waters even more you're saying it actually may end up doing the opposite it made clear fight and get rid of a big mess now do you think that's that's going to happen we've got we've got about a minute. i mean i think you know look what the president did in the phone call with the president ukraine as well as the withholding military aid that is an impeachable offense and so we have a clear impeachable offense that the president and those around him have confessed to him but have verified so i think in that sense we have a clear impeachable offense and impeachment is the constitutional provision that allows us to deal with a president who has committed such wrongs and i think you know as we go forward what will happen is we'll reach a tipping point where republican elected officials other republican elected officials including the cowards in the senate in the house who have been unwilling
