a tough situation given our relationship with our nato ally turkey who has fought alongside the united states in the past and president trump is threatening sanctions. if turkey does something that they shouldn't be doing we will put on sanctions the likes of which very few countries have ever seen before now the u.s. is backpedaling the troops are still on patrol a few kilometers from the conflict zone as and they have vacuity just days ago they've also come under fire from turkish artillery although with no reported injuries. this is c.c.t.v. footage of a large camp holding tens of thousands of family members of islamic state militants and it shows an apparent escape attempt the camp is controlled by kurdish forces and they say the situation is critical and in the kurdish town of kemi a car bomb claimed by us. took as president richard type has lashed out at the u.s. his criticism him no doubt so we won't stop no matter what anyone says. yes

turkish side as well is very tense and there have been warnings for journalists to so that's why we moved a little further away today now the turkish defense ministry says that the turkish army and its allies have captured the syrian border town of russell i am in northeast syria this is a city of about 50000 people that's an estimation here they have been trying to do so in the past days by in circling the city and now at that has been and that has been that's important to mention one of the 1st main targets now they have apparently managed to do so we saw some video footage all of uncurl backed syrian opposition fighters inside the industrial area overdress ion and we know that's in the city center so they are inside the city right now kurdish forces have denied that the turkish army has allies have captured that but it seems right now clashes
1:06 pm
there are continuing so that's on the syrian side how is this operation affecting people on the on the turkish side where you are. well the atmosphere here is very tense there have been a number of reprisal attacks from the syrian side moore says rockets was sent over into turkish border towns there have been several civilian casualties here on the turkish side we just heard yesterday went to a village very close by where people had a funeral for 2 people who were killed in an attack yesterday people were crying they were desperate it was really painful to watch these scenes and we've also talked to people here in sorrow which is as i mentioned also very close to the syrian border let's listen to what they had to say. 33 people are caught in the middle why are we fighting in syria and our people here on the turkish side so for today just yesterday 2 or 3 people died in a place very close to here to pity what was this fight for.
1:07 pm
this is our government's fault they got us into this very bad situation why did they do this what's it all for nothing. you know that. may allah help our soldiers and make their mission easy to help our state. now uli along with those concerns there are some serious worries about those captured islamic state fighters escaping from kurdish presence. well that's true and the kurdish forces there have been warning about this from the very beginning they are saying basically you know if we have busy defending this area against a turkish military assault we won't have time to deal with the captured isis fighters they are holding isis fighters in makeshift prisons and the families and children of these fighters in camps so huge. a couple of tens of thousands of people and
1:08 pm
there have been some very warring reports about apparent breakout at times not everything that's coming from the cutter site there is something that we can in the pan the only concern by all accounts from what we hear from the other side of the border the situation in these camps right now seems to be pretty chaotic now what about a 3rd country involved here the united states it's been warning about severe economic sanctions how are those threats being received. well these are the threats coming from washington then there has also been international criticism from the european union the nato also. turkey to show restraint now the turkish government is absolutely not happy about this criticism they say this is a legitimate security operation we are defending national security here against a terrorism threat so they don't want to hear criticism they expect solidarity from

specially designed course in vienna in a time of one hour 59 minutes and 40 seconds but the feat actually will not count as an official world record that's because of certain strategies that were used including the way that kid chhobi was paced. well in a story gets even on the last sports reporter flores joins me now in studio with more on that haeckel i mean tell me about this race against time that could show you once a day one in running a marathon is already a feed in itself but to do it in under 2 hours is already mind blowing the to put things into perspective imagine running the 100 meter dash in about 17 seconds but 420 times so it's completely ridiculous that he was able to break this barrier that people thought it was not possible for for humans to actually break that time under 2 hours and he himself said it has a similar impact as the moon landing so just imagine that how breaking that that is
1:13 pm
now there are some reasons though why this is not an official world record right so we were talking about pacemakers even lasers i mean tell us more about that yes this is a this wasn't a competition but it was a challenge that was created as a publicity stunt by his sponsors but it's not considered a. a war record since you had some sort of let's call it help so in this case the whole race or the whole challenge was engineered for him to a tee in order for him to break that record so we're talking from something as simple as his bottle of water in the north and you go and pick up your bottled water he just just run and run and run and then he would have somebody would just give it. a little things like that asked to having a car in front of him that had a laser that would point exactly where he had to be in order to achieve that record or have the time in under 2 hours so either it's a p.r. stunt or not. you know look at this canyon stay won't care. all those millions
1:14 pm
that follow him they don't care if it's a p.r. stunt or not he represents them he represents humanity and now he's broken that barrier to our earth to a national hero really in his own country as you mentioned good job is called this basically on par with humans landing on the moon i mean can you put this in perspective what kind of achievement is this breaking that she auerbach who of course there's this quest to go always harder be better be faster stronger and in many ways he's just breaking up barry and just going for more and more and more and today's not only a victory for me for him or his country but it's a victory to the whole world of athletics it's been under a lot of fire there's been a lot of. problems with the world of athletics the image of it and now he's been able to pretty much get a victory for them today still very impressive florists from sports thank you so much and. you're watching the news live from berlin i'm carl nason up next is our
