enough. there was a skunk sick you just can't go there and indiscriminately shoot people it doesn't matter what religion the people follow this is fictitious very critical should anything ever happen here in any case it's questionable whether it's safe here. this is the freedom we would feel better if there was a police presence here for our protection. fiza facts just as much as the synagogues what happened is. the states and for police have to be more involved with. germany's domestic intelligence had once watched the mosque for extremist views of its own but there is no sign of that today in a sermon the imaam condemned the attack in holland saying the state is tasked to provide protection for all citizens. as it actually doesn't matter if someone is
7:11 pm
a jew a muslim a christian or an atheist and. in the end jewish people and muslims are more affected because we are a target for nazis and racists. not the system. and meanwhile not far away these people are also expressing solidarity between religions christians jews and muslims have gathered to pray for peace this kind of interfaith service is unusual appealing for intercultural dialogue working against hate and exclusion. of course you are always afraid especially when you hear about attacks like the one just now in hell or then you ask yourself tomorrow will it be us always some other group be the target the question is not only relevant for muslims but for everyone. the terror attack in holland has put germany on edge the spotlight is on authorities to provide better securities for jews muslims and
7:12 pm
everyone else. to talk through this now i'm joined in the studio by your reporter william know it good to see william 1st of all how big is the threat right now germany's muslim community all this of course lots of reporting both from the state and from nonprofit organizations about what kind of threats what kind of crimes are committed against muslims are committed against jews and other kinds of groups but i think it's important not to get too caught up in these numbers because a lot of these numbers. our our criticize there's a lot of questions about these numbers there's been reporting changes the changes in classifications and definitions. anti muslim crime isn't even of very much a formalized kind of crime in germany or it's just becoming that so there's there's a lot of questions about what these numbers are actually saying alternately this is not a competition for who gets police protection this as we saw in the report really comes to the very democratic foundations of germany absolutely and with that in mind how does germany didn't plan to confront far right violence that we're talking about
7:13 pm
that targeted at someone who is muslim someone who is jewish other people it's important also know that this is not the 1st time this question is coming up muslims and people that of the community have been saying for a long time they think they need more protection as well as we've been hearing that from the jewish community as well we heard from the interior minister this week of germany or say off or talking about more policing going after online hate speech things we've heard before but i think more with the zoom out from these legal and criminal justice questions to be looking at you know the fact that horse they offer is own party the c.s.u. in their bavarian state elections try to out if the the alternative for germany party by going really hard to the right on questions of migration questions of minorities we have been dealing with failures in the police and security apparatus in germany from dealing with far right violent with far right groups repressing information denying that this problem is there so this this problem goes far beyond just how many police we put in front of a mosque or
7:14 pm
a synagogue so these proposed steps then do they go far enough while i think this is has said this is much more about a social question than a legal or policing question i mean let's look at khalid just as an example i mean in the 16 percent of voters there voted for the f.t. the far right party in the 2017 federal elections that's also reflected in the european elections the f.t. is the 2nd largest party in their state parliament and they're currently polling still in 2nd place for the. he's 21 state elections coming up so it's a bit rich to beast to be talking about where this this haven this anti-semitism also anti muslim center become can be coming from from just a lone wolf as we saw in wednesday's attack when really there's such as when a 5th of the population is voting for the f.t. or more in other parts of germany report what you know thank you very much indeed and watching d.w. news night from berlin i'm helena humphrey the tech show shift is up next and don't forget you can always get the latest news from around the world on our web site
