9:01 pm
from heaven on free glad you could join me we start in poland now where polls are closed off the nation's parliamentary election on sunday turnout was high as people voted on whether to give the rightwing nationalist lauren justice party a 2nd term in power now the vote was held amid concerns within the e.u. over the party's commitment to a future democratic system opposition party say that the outgoing government has undermined the independence of the judiciary and media as well as making poland less welcoming to ethnic minorities in the l g b t community. well in warsaw correspondent livia courtis is standing by with us and also in the studio wojciech szymanski for. service hello and welcome to you both i want to begin with
9:02 pm
you because you have the projected results so can the nationalist no and justice party the p.i.a.'s govern alone again or will they have to form a coalition or is it too close to call. i think it's too close to call. the exit polls in poland are not very reliable we've seen that in the past but according to the exit poll the. law and justice party will get around for 43 percent of the votes but more important is that the right being confident is supposed to get 6 percent which means that it will meet the 5 percent threshold and will get into the parliament and that means for peace that it might be difficult to get the majority vote and it might have to go into a coalition right then over to a vortex so 43 percent potentially for the ruling party and then the entry that the
9:03 pm
right wing anything surprising that you in those results would you say well yeah i would say yes queues for weeks we've heard these surveys saying law and justice party will get a comfortable majority and this is now getting really exciting because 43 percent is it doesn't have to mean as with that law and justice party will be able to govern alone we still don't know what are the results of the other parties but this is a little surprise i think law and justice party was willing and was ready to govern alone but at this point we really don't know if this is going to be possible or i want to take it back over to alleviate them because we just heard it that some surprise there for the you know i'm justice party again potentially but within not in mind would prime minister motive yet he likely be able to retain his post do you think. yes that there were rumors before that
9:04 pm
even peace party leader of kaczynski would maybe go for the position of the prime minister but just this week in an interview he said that he is the most natural person for that post so most probably if peace can form the government. will be the prime minister again. or check the have been concerns about the door and justice party but seemingly remaining relatively successful can you explain that and as well why the turnout i may have potentially been so you know for the opposition well law and justice party is greatly working machine with very consistent and coherent program knowing what it wants to do with the country knowing what it wants to go and it's a party which has changed a pair of big mind poland for the 1st time after $989.00 giving money. to the
9:05 pm
people and we have to say it is a party which kept in full field many of its promises which was not often taking place in poland before and all this together makes it so difficult i would say for the opposition to fight against this as i said really great the working machine law and justice party and wojciech what can we expect the outcome of the government and its new formation what can we expect the impact to be in germany well i believe germany has already used to getting used to discover meant in poland to despoil and ruled by law and justice party so i don't expect much change will germany and poland needs themselves they are very big important trait partners so i believe it will be continued their way. is well poland. a neighbor for germany to neighbor. except say you know it's there but
9:06 pm
poland and germany are not going to be with this government you know neighbors who would together have ideas how to change for example your neighborhood to have some impact and ideas for for the region of for europe all right we're czech szymanski with me hey in the studio and in warsaw tonight and of a quarter past thanks very much t. but. let's take a look now at some of the other stories making news around the world time for you now have us has roared across japan leaving at least 33 people dead and many more injured and one of the strongest storms to hit the country in recent history rescue efforts are underway after record rains triggered major flooding and landslides. thousands gathered in central valley on sunday to protest anti-semitism and right wing violence that comes after 2 people were shot dead in the eastern german town
9:07 pm
of hala a gunman attempted a massacre at a synagogue where around 50 people were observing a young kapoor holiday. well german chancellor i'm going to marco has told turkey to immediately halt its offensive in northern syria macrame demanded a phone call with turkish president type at a one on sunday that's according to a german government spokesperson it comes a day after germany announced it would stop arms exports to turkey but the fighting rages on and is driving thousands from their homes. safe at last sheltering in a school classroom in our hearts like or when the 1st bombs found see home is mild took her 2 children and fled their border town home leaving all their possessions behind the pregnant mother has no idea what the future holds. and why doesn't anyone help us our children will suffer and what degree supposed to do where are we supposed to go help us if just for the children it's
9:08 pm
a slug. more than 200 people are sheltering in the school about 5 to a classroom food and water are scarce medical supplies to you and yet conditions here are better than for their friends and relatives still in the castle i mean videos purported to originate that show a desperate situation. as of since yesterday have been bobbing without interruption entering houses laying mines detonating them and destroying everything stealing everything affordable we were going to be. tens of thousands of people are fleeing towns on the turkish border to our interior it's just 75 kilometers from the past but it's safe from air raids at least so far. this small town is struggling to cope with the influx. but given all the schools are full already.
9:09 pm
we don't have the infrastructure to provide for so many people. options are very limited. because hospital is treating wounded fighters from the front terrorists if you believe the one son is one of them his mother hasn't left his son lied. about what are the kurds not terrorists we haven't done anything to anyone we haven't attacked people. in every day they demonstrate on our streets for their homeland their fighters and against what they regard as occupying forces. well joining us now from istanbul is it already correspondent dorian jones story german chancellor i'm going to merkel has told turkey to immediately how it's offensive in northern syria have we heard any reaction from the turkish side here at. no direct response to chancellor merkel's
9:10 pm
call for sunday president has been dismissing calls similar calls from other european leaders saying turkey easing into listen to what he says is this call to end the fight against terrorism they say is very much about the future of the country nothing will dissuade turkey from continuing its operations and in fact turkey does appear to be ramping up its operations given the fast moving developments happening in syria now that turkey very much see this is a key moment this is not a moment now to step back but rather to operations up further there's even speculation turkey could extend its operations far beyond the original objective of the 30 kilometer safe so turkey really sees this as a critical moment for the whole region this is a moment the turkey has to address all its concerns this is a chance to do that it will be lost in the future and given the fact that the european leaders are ending arms embargoes that means very little to turkey given turkey has a very sophisticated developed defense industry such fretfully little to attack you
9:11 pm
and on the other side door and we are now hearing that syrian government troops are moving north to confront takesh offensive what more do you know about that. well that's right the key town is believed to fall into turkish forces this follows russia also falling this is a sign that turkey does believe it has now the momentum behind its operation we're also hearing reports syrian regime forces are about to move in on the critically important which is very close to russia on the turkish border and also the strategically important beach both have been held by syrian kurdish forces these events are happening and following the announcement of the u.s. do appear to be removed a step forwards of removing all their forces from this area and i think any hope on the syrian kurdish force that washington would change a stance and come to its aid it is now the syrian kurds are looking to make a deal with possibly that the massacres forces backed by moscow so a fast developing situation and really what we see now is
9:12 pm
a free for all where all sides are trying to stake their claim to this area absolutely and add to that. more than 700 islamic state supporters of escaped from account in syria as kurdish guards left to fight what else we know about them. several 100 people have escaped from this camp here happened as fighting moved closer to the camp and the inmates saw this is a chance to escape they've been know that the syrian kurdish forces are on the back foot they probably rose up and over those protecting and of us kate and we have to fear is now this is just the beginning of a process. holding around 12000 or 2000 that believed to be foreign nationals on top of that tens of thousands of sympathizers of family members the face of these people now is of concern for the whole of the international community and the belief is that if the syrian kurds are on the point of collapsing and all of these people will be at large and this will cause major implications for the whole region
