a police shootout with cartel gunmen mexico's president says the authorities are right to back down to save civilians caught in the crossfire. and in japan england and australia kick off their fierce rivalry in the rugby world cup quarterfinals bragging rights are at stake and both teams believe this is their year to win it all. i'm sumi so much god it's good to have you with us it is now day 5 of protests that are gripping the city of barcelona the uproar over the imprisonment of independence leaders is sweeping through the region a general strike has brought business and industry to a halt while tens of thousands of catalan flag waving demonstrators have flooded the center of barcelona they are demanding independence for catalonia and the release of jailed separatists and. we are looking here at pictures of today's
8:02 pm
demonstration in the catalan capital now the demonstration has largely been peaceful but some clashes broke out between demonstrators and riot police these here are live pictures we're looking at right now we can see this is a very volatile situation on the ground this is these are pictures of a more violent part of those protests earlier demonstrators made street barricades that are large trash containers and set them on fire. and let's go right to our correspondent helena humphrey is covering the events on the ground for us in barcelona hi helena have you seen signs of violence where you are. where i've been to see me it's been largely peaceful that said there certainly have been saw ends of violence just over my shoulder around half an hour ago we saw smoke billowing and we know that protesters had been setting barricades on 5 particularly last night we did just hear a loud boom just moments before we went on and we cannot verify at this stage what
8:03 pm
that was whether that was a fireworks or whether that was a stun grenade for example we know that the civil police are now coming to back up the police here on the ground and you have to bear in mind that tens of thousands of people are converging on the barcelona tonight that come from around 5 towns and cities here in catalonia to make their voices heard so certainly there is the prospects for heightened violence now it follow a pattern that we've seen over the past 4 nights one protester i spoke to says that although he is in favor of changes here in catalonia here opposes the violence and he's trying to stop people when they've been carrying out acts of vandalism jury in the night and he says these people simply seem very different to the people who have been out here on the streets during peaceful protests throughout the day elena looking at how authorities have been reacting spain's acting prime minister pedro sanchez was speaking in brussels
8:04 pm
a little bit earlier today and said there is no tolerance for any violence a let's listen to what he said. with. your input on. those responsible for acts of violence i could be identified to this group and be taken before the courts to receive the corresponding sanctions on proof. through and through the middle east and based in the few hours of them that is there is nurse base for impunity in relation to the serious acts of violence we have witnessed over recent days in different cities in catalonia their mobile phone booth so how in a very clear words there from pedro sanches at the same time these protests have pushed on so what are protesters looking to achieve here. so we have got to main goals many people here tonight off your us about the lengthy prison sentences which were handed out by the supreme court on monday for 9 catalan separatist leaders with jail terms of up to 13 years in some cases and they want
8:05 pm
those sentences should be overturned other people here say that they simply want another referendum which him toward the leader of catalonia is proposing they want not to come within the next 2 years and they say simply that the cats of our leaders who went to prison were helping them exercise and freedom of expression and that is what they want to see here in catalonia telling us something a lot of like in these protests to what we've seen in hong kong in recent months do you think that's a fair comparison. to be i would say it's an unsurprising comparison 1st if you take a look at how these protests have been organized some of the more serious demonstrations where we sue acts of civil disobedience have been organized using an app from a group called tsunami democratic it's a fairly hard to access its leaders are largely secretive and we see parallels there for example with the movement in hong kong coming back to that active civil disobedience for example that we saw a monday with the occupation of the airport that again was
8:06 pm
a tactic to attract international attention. which again definitely track to detention in home poll and the use of violence for years protests he has been peaceful this violence again the parallel for example with hong kong with the yellow vests in fronts as well as with ecuador so we're certainly seeing cartels with various movements around the world right now. helena humphrey with the very latest there on the ground in barcelona thank you. turkey is denying accusations that it has violated a fragile ceasefire in northern syria kurdish forces have accused of continuing to attack a border town president says turkey will relaunch its offensive in the region unless kurdish militia militias move back from the border but. a far cry from a ceasefire. this is the syrian border town of. fighting
8:07 pm
rages on between turkish bank forces and the kurds even as turkish president rich hip tayyip erdogan denies further violence but he vows to press on if there are still forces opposing turkey along a safe zone ankara wants to create along the border so lou of. his day night this issue of a safe zone along the border will have been resolved. i'm open. but if this promise is not fulfilled without any exception the minute this time is up our operation will resume where it stopped that was annulled with even more determination. as turkish forces continue to enter northern syria local residents in tel i say fighting there has stopped this town which also lies on the turkish border with just captured from kurdish units.
