a tragedy unfolding in the u.k. $39.00 people have been found dead in a truck container on the outskirts of london the vehicle was found at an industrial park and it's believed to have come from bulgaria the driver has been arrested on suspicion of murder. at 1st glance there is nothing unusual about this cargo truck parked in an industrial estates in the town of gray's east of london but when police forced open its doors in the early hours of wednesday they made a gruesome discovery the lifeless bodies of 39 people believed to have made their way to the u.k. from area police say they arrived too late to help those inside emergency services attended but sadly all 39 people inside the container who died. early indications suggest that one of these people was a teenager the rest are believed to be adults. a murder investigation was launched

and the lorry driver a 25 year old man from northern ireland was arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in place custody prime minister. prime minister boris johnson expressed his condolences in parliament so the whole house will be shocked by the appalling news that $39.00 bodies have been discovered in a lorry container in essex this is an unimaginable tragedy and truly heartbreaking i know that the thoughts and prayers of all members are with those who lost their lives and their loved ones. the truck entered britain via arland on saturday police are now trying to piece together how the journey ended in tragedy. and let's go right to our correspondent charlotta potts is in the industrial park in the town of grace just east of london where those bodies were discovered how shallow to you're on the scene there what are the latest developments. well police have
4:04 pm
cordoned of this area since the emergency services responded last night here at the scene to a call from ambulances and the ambulances arrived at the scene they couldn't save the lives of the 39 people they were found dead at the scene as i said everything is cordoned off here but we were able to take a quick look at that truck when police escorted us there and there's not much i can tell you it is an odd unerringly truck and you can only begin to imagine what kind of conditions those people were under and that truck that arrived in this small town east of london an hour away from london the police has been extremely tight lipped about their investigation we know that they are investigating that driver the 25 year old northern irish driver at the moment and they are hoping that he will have more answers as to what has happened on this journey from bulgaria to the united kingdom show that is there anything more you can tell us about the victims. well we know that this truck originated in bulgaria but we don't know anything
4:05 pm
about the victims yet authorities have not confirmed to the original of these victims where they were from and if they were indeed migrants so this is all speculation at this point but we do know that refugees and migrants of course trying. time and time again to enter the united kingdom in hopes for a better future and people trafficking in europe remains an issue also being carried in the back of lorries so this is what the authorities are hoping that the driver can answer more questions about and i was talking to a truck driver today who told me look most of the times the drivers don't even know what they are carrying in the back of their trucks but with this particular driver he chose a very well let's say on also docks route into the united kingdom he didn't come if he was indeed coming from eastern europe didn't go through the big port town of dover but he took a detour so to say and that suggests that he wanted to avoid physical physical

checks of the truck so authorities do hope that this driver will have some and souce as to who the victims were and where they were from. on the scene there in grays just outside of london thank you russia and turkey say they have a plan for syria's future after talks in the black sea resort of sochi russian president vladimir putin and his turkish counterpart. say they're adding another 6 days to a ceasefire that was due to expire on tuesday evening turkey wants to establish a buffer zone along its border with northern syria from which kurdish forces would be excluded the agreement follows a u.s. brokered truce which expired on tuesday. the kremlin had predicted difficult talks perhaps that's why the greeting was particularly friendly we organize extra nice weather for you may have putin told his turkish counterpart russia type ad 16
4:07 pm
and a half long hours of negotiations lay ahead mostly in private the biggest sticking point the extent of a proposed buffer zone and who controls it. in a very long and tends to scotians we have succeeded in finding a solution which in my opinion is very important and promising. possible if there is a just a solution for the very complicated situation that the turkish syrian border cities could produce continued under the deal russian military police and syrian troops will ensure that syrian kurdish forces retreat 30 kilometers from the border during a cease fire russian and turkish troops will then jointly patrol a buffer zone 10 kilometers wide added one had demanded 35 kilometers how to calculate right now the syrian refugees will move into the areas that are to be cleared of terrorists will close affects around $1000000.00 people you know.
4:08 pm
turkey and russia will be hoping for international help to resettle refugees but a german proposal to establish an international safe zone was not considered in the such he talks it was new year what do you need europeans for another unnecessary big player in a situation that's very difficult anyway and then you add in some strangers and you know i don't think russia wants that the fewer partners the better we wish the sochi t.l. will enhance putin's role in the region even add one had to accept that in the search for a solution to the syria conflict there's no way around the russian president. nato secretary general yen stoltenberg says it is too early to judge the consequences of the deal that was struck between russia and nato member turkey over northern syria speaking ahead of a nato defense ministers summit in brussels stoltenberg said he was encouraged that a cease fire between turkey and the syrian kurds ahead of the agreement was
4:09 pm
a 1st step towards a political settlement. and our correspondent teri schultz is covering that summit for us in brussels hi terry so yes stoltenberg says it is too early to pass judgment but what how is nato viewing the situation at this point in northern syria . very very cautiously suman this situation puts nato in such an awkward position not only were many allies uncomfortable when the us pulled its limited military personnel out of northern syria because that was seen as the only barrier to turkey going in then of course they spoke out against turkey's military incursion they urged turkey not to do this they urged turkey to make it very limited of course many of these same governments most of these same governments across town at e.u. had quarters have already put a partial arms embargo on turkey that's something that can't happen at nato but there are going to be some very awkward conversations around the table some very uncomfortable discussions to be had everyone says they're looking forward to
4:10 pm
hearing how it describes what it's doing in northern syria what about the u.s. position terry what is the u.s. . the u.s. of course is seen by some as partially responsible for the turks going in the u.s. doesn't take responsibility itself it has blamed turkey very harshly of course we saw president trump put out these tweets after the incursion saying he would destroy the turkish economy because of this and more relevant here to nato you have the u.s. defense secretary mark esper on his way to brussels now saying that he believes that war crimes may have been committed on the ground in northern syria and that turkey may be held responsible for that so again i just can't emphasize strongly enough what an awkward situation this is for the alliance these are their 2 biggest militaries and they are criticizing each other in this situation one more positive note both allies and nato secretary general u.n. stoltenberg have responded positively to the german suggestion that if there is
4:11 pm
a safe zone set up in northern syria that perhaps there would be an international monitoring mission of that area led by germany so the u.s. could then support this proposal for an international security zone but wouldn't take part in it. that's right i asked u.s. ambassador kay bailey hutchison if the u.s. would participate in this and she said she doesn't see that happening but she saw it as a very good thing that europe is taking the lead on this that germany's specifically has proposed this and she said that will be discussed around the table and that it would be views viewed as a very positive development if there should be a safe zone set up in northern syria to defuse teri schultz reporting for us thank you terry. let's get a look now at some other stories making news around the world european council president donald tusk says he will recommend the e.u. grant the u.k. another extension to leave the bloc british prime minister boris johnson says he wants no further breaks that delay but after parliament rejected a schedule for debate on his divorce deal he could now push for an early election.

a right tight lipped at the congressional hearings mr taylor what led you to be concerned about a quid pro quo in closed door testimony taylor described what he called alarming circumstances that he said threaten the u.s. relationship with ukraine he alleged u.s. military aid was made dependent on political investigations a quid pro quo in his testimony taylor said he believed trump had a shadow foreign policy on ukraine aimed to benefit the president among other things representatives allegedly told key if to look into possible corruption linked to hunter by summer comes potential democratic opponent. joe biden. democrats say taylor's testimony is stunning and well to speed up the impeachment hearings. we have a crime where a cover up in progress we're going to move quickly but move fairly but for now the republican leadership is standing by the president and his controversial
