bodies have been discovered in a lorry container in essex this is an unimaginable tragedy and truly heartbreaking i know that the thoughts and prayers of all members are with those who lost their lives and their loved ones. the origin of the truck is still unclear police are now trying to piece together how its journey ended in tragedy you know because charlotte potts is in the industrial park in the town of grays east of london where the bodies were discovered and charlie are at the scene there what are the latest developments. well police have cordoned off this area since the early morning hours the truck is right behind me then and then. behind behind gates behind me and we were able to take a look at the truck very ordinary truck of course but forensic teams were walking on the truck and the $39.00 bodies that were found inside of it by ambulance
6:04 pm
services and later emergency services here at the scene and essex so far authorities don't know who the victims were they haven't identified them that's one of the forensic services have been working on the scene we believe that this is a tragic case of human trafficking on migrants trying to reach the united kingdom it definitely reminds of an incident in 2015 when a truck was found with over 70 dead my gran's in austria at the height of the refugee crisis and of course migrants and refugees trying to reach the united kingdom frequently and hope for a better life so this is what we know so far it's still ongoing of course and we know that that 25 year old northern irish dr is still in custody and is being questioned by the authorities as we speak and we have heard from those authorities
6:05 pm
that the investigation is really just beginning here there's some conflicting information about how the truck reached the u.k. do we know anything else about that charlotte. well right now believe that this truck when from a poet's home an m. belgium over to the united kingdom to the county of essex where i'm at right now so to appall it's very close to this industrial park this is the latest information that we have god's conflicting information because we've heard that the truck came maybe via island so authorities are looking at that right now before we were reporting that this truck had originated in bulgaria that doesn't seem to be the case the truck was just registered in bulgaria which is often the case with irish trucks the truck belonged to an irish company x. reasons say it's a stretch is that there so really the original if this truck is unknown and
6:06 pm
authorities are hoping that the driver can of course shut some of that light on that charlotte potts at the scene of this tragedy 39 people dead charlotte thank you so much for your reporting. u.s. president donald trump says that he is lifting economic sanctions on turkey after all great promise to make permanent a cease fire against kurdish militia in northeastern syria tromp making the statement in a press conference a short while ago he claimed credit for the outcome the cease fire requires kurdish forces to move out of a 30 kilometer zone on the turkish border turkey launched its offensive into northeastern syria after trump pulled u.s. forces out of the region. there's was an outcome created by us the united states and nobody else no other nation are simple and we're willing to take blame and we're also willing to take credit this is something they've been trying to do for
6:07 pm
many many decades since then. others have come out to help and we welcome them to do so other countries have stepped forward they want to help and we think that's great turkey syria and all forms of the kurds have been fighting for centuries we have done them a great service and we've done a great job for all of them and now we're getting out let's get more now on the situation in northern syria we are joined by from the german institute for international and security affairs get a welcome to the program i'd like to 1st ask you about that statement that we just heard from the u.s. president quite an upbeat statement essentially saying that by all indications turkey is making the ceasefire permanent lifting the sanctions against turkey your take. well it's the statement is is bizarre the sanctions were bizarre u.s. policy was bizarre in recent weeks the united states has left no we do see russia
6:08 pm
the assad regime and turkey dividing north and syria between themselves this has nothing to do with the us and it's not a success at all for the us and western policies in turn or and those 2 parties i mean now that there is you know no more u.s. presence in the area those 2 parties essentially came up with this deal to sort of carve out the region yesterday where does this leave the kurds and the syrians well the syrians the syrian regime is winning together together with the russians simply because. the assad regime has been weak it suffers from a lack of personnel but because of the u.s. withdrawal it has been able to regain control of some small parts of northeastern soria the syrian kurds they will lose their autonomy they are losing territory right now to the russians to the syrian regime and to the turks and in the end they
6:09 pm
will be they haven't agreed to that they haven't agreed to agree to that but that shows us something about their future the kurdish autonomy without american protection will not continue to exist for a long time they have already they have already approached damascus and they will return to the syrian fold in the coming months or years we heard the german defense minister weigh in yesterday on the situation there she suggested a security zone in northern syria what do you make of that proposal is it realistic could it possibly be implemented the way the europeans have no say in what is happening over there we have seen an agreement between russia and turkey russia is the protector of the syrians. right now turkey has some influence and there is no way to bring back any western troops into the country without fighting for it and
6:10 pm
the germans are not ready ready for it my take on this situation is that the german defense minister if she knew what she was talking about yesterday was talking or was addressing dimiss the mastic audience what she said has nothing to do whatsoever with the situation in syria and nothing nothing to do with the german syria policies in recent years is europe dropping the ball right now is nato dropping the ball right now on the we had secretary general you. think it's too early to judge the consequences of that deal that was struck between russia and turkey over northern syria your view oh it's not the us is out without the us there is no western presence in the country anymore we've got some 200 us military and a ton of that is of no consequence to the to the future of the syrian state there is no nato no western presence in the country we have seen yesterday the new
6:11 pm
reality of syria it's. who's in charge and it is turkey and turkey only because putin wants to. wants to break the alliance between turkey and the west that's the only reason why the turks are allowed to remain in syria right now that's the new reality on the ground it has nothing to do whatsoever with us. middle east analyst thanks for your perspective. for a quick check of some other stories making news around the world nearly half of the population of north korea is undernourished according to the united nations a u.n. special investigation has found that 11000000 people are facing what it calls alarming levels of food insecurity the u.n. says that collective. arming is exacerbating food shortages. tunisia's new president has been sworn in kies side vowed to fight corruption and protect

german institute for international and security affairs thank you so much for joining us here on the program we just heard from piniella apologizing essentially for the lack of foresight coming up with this new proposal is that enough no it's not enough because he's only talking to the economic and social sides here hasn't touched the political side you have have you problem busy bubble of the political elite in chile which is traditionally very closed and which has not been able even not to your position parties to get close to the people to have. interests and russians reasons of the protest so there has to be a major effort to. come to a dialogue which is not visit traditional forces but i mean for his part he says that there was a lack of foresight we know i mean it's just a fact inequality in chile is higher than any other latin american country that is surely no surprise to the political elites such as pena why has that fundamental

changes been made earlier it's the model of chile it's a privatized model of social security is the model of looking for economic growth not so much looking to the social dimensions we have protests of students in 200620112 have been made in my just moments but always with the interests to maintain the model as it is working and know it's the moment to revise the model and to begin the discussion in the country it will go to . and which is that model it's made to spill so much let's talk about some other models because it's not just the labor we're seeing on rest on the streets such as those images that we have just been looking at also in ecuador for example civil war like conditions due to the government austerity program then a swale of we've seen this for quite some time in venezuela basically you know

a permanent political crisis there argentina and its financial limit. are these just coincidence this or is this part of a larger trend in latin america right now i think we have to be cautious to find the common denominator for all the cases national specific disease that we have to respect but one major opponent is for sure we have a contagious effect misuse of violence you have. of a successful change in equator and a lot of people in the streets of syrian says this opportunity to make a copy in their own country can try to come to grips with the difficulties they have in the political article nation because in olivia we have the same president which is trying to reelect him says in argentina we have a possible cumber of comeback of cristina fernandez deserve the same people which are turning around in the hands of the power there must be

a change in terms of and turn it if which is to the new liberal model so what do you think are the lessons learned that. do not only look to the economic side to have a clear vision that we have to be more active in the public sphere to make that not only was established forces to have new forms of fora to discussion with the use with other excluded parts of the population and this means a new type of. policy politics and politi as well going to my old expert at the german institute for international and security affairs thank you thank you . you're watching news still to come on the program never mind the price the stage is set for a rock memorabilia sell off including the infamous journey card again worn by grunge legend art cobain. but 1st what do you do when any historic lighthouse is about to fall off of
