on a voyage of discovery. expedition good on t.w. . this is g.w. do some live from berlin argentina as voters turn to the left hoping that will leave the top of an economic crisis. that those celebrations are likely to be short lived as president elect up at the fernandez now house to pull the country back from the brink of default also coming up tonight
9:01 pm
british prime minister boris johnson gets the breaks it still lady says he doesn't want and the u.k. parliament works his attempts to hold a snap election on december 12th plus wildfires ravaged northern california's wine country turning homes and famed wineries into ash. i'm burnt off to our viewers on p.b.s. in the united states and all around the world welcome the left has returned to power in argentina on a promise to fix a broken economy but that victory it could prove to be a poison chalice for president elect al bad so fernandes he now faces the daunting task of dodging yet another damaging default. celebrations in the streets of
9:02 pm
pointless id's happiness and hope sweep over crowds supporting the victory in vision a political outsider to fernandez. a little bit better than the people are waking up but we can't stand the oppression of those who have more and don't give a damn about us the working people the poor babies so i'm happy because people still have this hope and my daughter will have a better future. but supporters believe fernandez can lift the nation out of its economic crisis the 60 year old law professor term president elect was a relative political unknown until recently but he's clear on his plans for the country that is where your we are of course going to work together as closely as possible. because the only thing that will concern us is stopping the suffering of argentina and once and for all this election is seen as a referendum on conservative president receive a mockery poverty sort under his watch but conceding defeat he struck a unifying tone. an orderly transition that will bring stability to old
9:03 pm
argentinians because the most important thing is the future in the. this election is a return to power for argentina center left making a comeback this time as mice president cristina fernandez tickets now she herself was president for 8 years fernandes his choice of running mate split opinion among voters but kitchen doesn't see it as dividing the country you know through the amount of inflammatory today i'll bet is president of all argentinean. for these people the hope is that this political plot twist will lift a nation out of poverty. are for more of this now i'm joined by our correspondents nicole for this she is in one it's always getting to you nicole so we've got a transition of power from the business friendly president mockery to the center left under president elect fernandez how drastic will this shift be in terms of
9:04 pm
economic policy. well that's the big unknown here at the moment because he says that he wants to do everything differently but doesn't really say how we don't know who his finance minister is going to be he has said very little about his plans of renegotiating the country's debt with the i.m.f. economists certainly say that what is to be expected is less market friendly economic policy and also a lot more protectionism one thing he has announced is what he calls a social contract between unions and employers that would freeze consumer prices and income for 6 months but everything beyond these 6 months is a worryingly unknown considering the country situation right now and president is basically it looks like he's going to try to undo most of president markers policies so how much support do you think he's going to hell for that.
9:05 pm
pull mockery doesn't really have another choice than to cooperate this is also his legacy they're talking about here he's still going to be the president until december 10th and for many he is the culprit of this crisis that argentina is going through at the moment so procuring a smooth transition even if it is with the political enemy is part of what he is going to leave behind and the image that argentinians are going to have once he he steps down from the presidency now they're striking a conciliatory tone the day after the elections knowing that they will have to work alongside each other but after december 10th that is sure to change because maurice your mockery isn't out to make any friends once he moves on to the opposition. or the correspondent to go further she born is always there on the floor well from
9:06 pm
this we can go watch and the new president in the country nicole thank you. we're here in europe the british government. has accepted the european union's proposal to extend the deadline for breaks and until the end of january now that gives the u.k. up to 3 months more to approve a break sit withdrawal deal now a short while ago british prime minister boris johnson wast his latest attempt to hold a snap election in december but he says he will try again as maybe as soon as tomorrow to get another book here is part of what the prime minister had to say tonight government will give our presentation for a short. pre-election on the 12th of december so that we can finally get it done. and this is there is no support in the house we heard earlier on from the benches opposite fool the wound to proceed but mr speaker this house. and you
9:07 pm
don't keep this country hostage. all right step with the board's johnson speaking about a house that is held hostage let's take this story now to our correspondent a lot of what's in london good evening to you so watch as the boris johnson he's lost another brags that vote in parliament but he hasn't given up his plan of having a snap election do you think he's going to succeed the next time i mean he may try as soon as tomorrow. well as it is with all things that it's highly unpredictable whether he will succeed or not but he will try with a different mechanism where he just needs a simple majority in parliament to approve of it and it does seem likely that now 2 other opposition parties the scottish national party and the liberal democrats will back his request for a general election the question there is on timing and that might seem petty to all of us the liberal democrats won an election on december 9th on someone's on 3 days
9:08 pm
later on december 12th and matters to the liberal democrats because students would be still at their universities being able to vote. in the liberal democrat school traditionally very well with students so we'll have to see how the vote turns out tomorrow but they will have another try and we'll have another try another go on getting a general election. the european union gave more flexibility. so why does john still want to have this. well he had to ditch his deadline 31st of october where he said he'd rather be dead in a ditch deadline so he's given up on that he has accepted that extension and he thinks the only way out of this to get his bricks
9:09 pm
a deal through parliament is to shake up the numbers and column and and he says parliament is dysfunctional they are not going to supported this way and this is why he's pushing for a general election when he wants a fresh mandate from the bridges to vote to then to have his breakfast strategy basically approved and to then pushes that deal through parliament so that the u.k. can leave the european union that is his strategy behind the push for a general election. how does all of this in effect the process. that i mean at the end of the day the u.k. dogs want to leave the european union. well what we've seen over the past year here in parliament is that there is no majority really on anything neither on leaving the european union with a deal we know the deal was rejected by paul and now 4 times different deals indeed so there is no majority on anything and this is why the numbers have to be shaken
9:10 pm
up at some point and this is what a general election can change and an election would give british voters again a choice it would be like a mini referendum it would give them the choice to either vote pro europeans into palm and or whether to approve boris johnson's strategy and indeed leave the european union so. a general election if it comes to that finally in december christmas would be of course all of. our correspondents on the story for tonight in london with the never ending story you want to thank you. well here's some of the other stories now that are making headlines around the world that french police have arrested an 84 year old gunman who wounded 2 men outside a mosque in the french city of by your own a police statement says the men surprised the shooter as he tried to set a fire one report says that he had links to france far right national rally party

have been killed since the protests started earlier this month. another day of protests in iraq thousands took to the streets of baghdad and other cities on monday angry about corruption and the lack of jobs and public services and once again they were met with force. security forces fired tear gas at the crowds of people marching in defiance of a warning from prime minister. not to join the demonstrations on sunday he said anyone disrupting businesses or schools would be punished protesters tried to cross the bridge leading to baghdad's fortified international zone which houses government buildings and foreign embassies. where peaceful demonstrators are protests are peaceful but those rulers harm the iraqi people no salaries no appointments no lands their promises are lies and they're hitting us with tear gas bombs as if we were not iraqis. there are no job opportunities my son stay at home

without a hope and that applies to all young people not only my sons this regime has been ruling us for 16 years but they offer us nothing we're fed up with them. students in the southern iraqi city of nasiriyah also took to the streets despite the warning they're demanding changes to the country's constitution and election laws there were similar scenes in the holy shiite city of not jobs as well authorities declared a curfew from midnight until 6 am state t.v. said it would be in effect until further notice. ard to the west coast of the united states now firefighters are battling huge blazes in northern and southern california strong winds are fanning the flames and a statewide emergency has been declared california's governor says that firefighters are using every resource available the kincaid fire which has been burning for the last 5 days has destroyed more than 90 buildings and threatens
9:14 pm
80000 more evacuation orders have been issued for nearly 200000 people in sonoma county which is north of san francisco. the curse of sonoma county just 2 years ago this area of northern california was in flames now it's again the region worst hit by the state's blazes fear of the fire has returned to communities that had just begun to recover from their previous trauma you can see this big. smoke in the bowl in the sky back there probably within a half hour or. less and that it was here already. then i walked outside my deck was on fire. time lapse footage shows the sonoma plays darkening the sky on sunday fire fighting conditions worsened further the blaze is huge with spot fires springing up around it's has thousands of firefighters are battling it but
9:15 pm
even so they admit they're losing the battle. well right now where the wind conditions continue continue to be a challenge for us we're prepping the story right now for structured offense in the event that the fire does make a run with the wind driven of them towards this subdivision authorities blame unprecedented gusts of wind for the worsening fire front there speed and unpredictability have been preventing firefighters from controlling the flames right now in sonoma the will of nature's deciding whose home will be spared and whose will go up in flames. feet and unpredictability on the front lines of the kincaide fire those are the challenges facing firefighters in sonoma county which is north of san francisco further south in the los angeles area we're joined tonight by jason kemp a donya of n.b.c. news radio jason it's good to have you with this talk to me about how bad are the
9:16 pm
wildfires where you are right now. and the getty fire which is next to the getting museum in the supposed at a basin just north of l.a. and they're important it's pretty bad it's only about 600 acres but as you can see the blanket of smoke that's behind me you can taste it you can smell it and it's bad it gets in your throat and i winds are really keeping this fire going and fire crews are given everything they've got at it they've got big airplanes water dropping helicopters ground crews and they're just trying to keep this thing down because the winds are really expected you can complain of this week and what about the neighborhoods there in the greater l.a. area i know earlier today le bron james tweeted that he had to leave his home because of the fire he couldn't find a place to stay for the next day i mean that was just one example of someone who's
9:17 pm
had to flee their homes how bad is it for the rest of the folks where you are so about 3000 people were evacuated in that area where le bron james lives also i don't swear snigger was in fact away this morning and the fire this morning really came out of nowhere it started about 2 o'clock in the morning and spread very very rapidly when we 1st got the call it was about one to 2 acres and literally about 20 minutes later it was already up around $100.00 and you give it another hour and then it was up over $400.00 so it spanned it spread really really rapidly and it's just chewing up the vegetation so people in that area had to go and they had to go quick you know when we look at the picture behind you it looks like there is this haze between the water the land in the sky if that the smoke from these wildfires and talk to me also about the response of the firefighters what kind of job do you
9:18 pm
think they're doing. they're doing the greatest job in the world they are really giving it everything they guy and yes that is smoke from the fires this morning we've had a couple down here in southern california and like i said it's really gross it's really gross to just be walking around we have reports that coal to power lines of started many of these wildfires besides the high speed winds what role do you think northern california's power utility p.g. and e. plays in this disaster. maybe quite a bit i don't want to criminalize anybody just yet but they are currently being sued for some faulty equipment that started the camp fire which leveled the town of paradise in northern california last year and that's going to be a $25000000000.00 lawsuit and they're faulty equipment is what's to blame and they they've have this in infrastructure in place for decades and they haven't done
9:19 pm
anything about it they haven't upgraded and decades so when the high winds come in it knocks down the power lines then the energized power lines will start the vegetation and then you've got a wildfire that's burning out of control that's right it's just to show investing in the future is also investing in a safe future chasing care but only joining us from los angeles with n.b.c. news reading your jason we appreciate it thank you. thank you you're watching the w. news coming up the equestrian event that runs on the most sustainable source of energy possible of course when you're we'll explain how power keeps the wind zons in helsinki that's coming up in just a moment. the world jewish congress has honored german chancellor angela merkel for her efforts to stop anti-semitism here in germany a few minutes ago the president of the organization ronald lauder presented merkel with the theodore helpful prize at a ceremony in munich her praise merkel as

a bulwark against extremism hate and anti-semitism at a time when germany has seen a sharp rise in attacks on jewish people and institutions earlier this month a german man attempted to stage a mass shooting in a synagogue in eastern germany 2 people nearby were killed in that attack. while corresponding for a hoffman he has been watching today's award ceremony for us in munich good evening to you frank why is the world jewish congress awarding this award to the german chancellor. well i would like to quote ronald all of the president of the world jewish congress here tonight he said that chance america continuously has supported jewish life in germany and worldwide she has continuously supported judaism itself and is the true state israel. and this not only being in

office but already before all through her political career and you really could have felt it here in munich that the audience especially the members of the world jewish committee conference said that our president currently here in munich for the next 2nd shift meeting they release all sorts what he will miss a lot of set here i think there's a great quote of an emotional point in that price and in that support for his neck and frank this award comes just weeks after the deadly attack near a synagogue in the east german city of hala how is the world jewish congress reacting to reports of growing anti-semitism here in germany. where they presented a study and a survey here in munich that was publish a couple of days ago saying that 27 percent of germans are anti-semitic 18 percent of german elites and mr norton highly criticized these figures of course but he also called the elites here saying we have to fight this and he came back to the

incident the terror attack in saying that all jewish when you synagogues schools can look on this have to be called by police which was not the case in khalid why if the security of the venue itself the thought that kept this attack a way out of out of the synagogue if that not had been the case this a lot of. we would have had highly more. in life so it's a lot applauded miss medical but also that we have to fight back again against anti-semitism all right our frank talk there on the story corps in munich frank thank you very much. well there is bad news for german chancellor merkel's conservative party the c.d.u. it was trail in a regional election in eastern germany on sunday most of its voters that it lost

went to the far right a.f.d. party. the left party had a lot to celebrate after its electoral showing in thuringia that by state premier botha. the party took 1st place and looks set to continue in government but they weren't the only one celebrating the far right f.t. led by b.n. hooka managed to double its results from 5 years ago. but for the parties that make up the ruling coalition in berlin strained smiles were the order of the day. chancellor angela merkel tried to put a good face on it but the disappointment over the victory of formerly marginal parties was clear. because in this people know this you have won the right station with the far and center left linking up with the greens on one side and the far right in the extreme form headed by each candidate has really increased and struck us apart. must see fit to can the. prediction if all the parties in the

political center of the greens the social democrats and us are so clearly losing public confidence while the margins have grown so strong that a lot has changed the center no longer has a majority and that's completely unprecedented it is not through. the center left social democrats and greens were also stunned by the far right strong showing but there is no easy solution at hand came from that we will continue to fight but the fact that the a 50 was able to get these results with a fascist at the top of the ticket for me and yes we've seen that deeply depressing talk and is into enough we're in a phase where society and its rules are breaking up we have to make the effort to create political order. now comes a difficult reckoning over the shape of the state government the cd used mike morning has not excluded talks with the left party. is making much money but after

these electoral results we have to be prepared to hold talks with a prudent and calm approach and without preconditions i can't tell you right now how it will look if we all need time to think about it but the parties have tough decisions ahead of them. all right now to the horse takes horse power to a whole new level. a competition in helsinki has shown its environmental credentials by generating all of its energy from are you ready horse manure world equestrian governing body says it proves alternative energy solutions can come from the most unlikely and stinky places. at the sequestering show in finland the horses do more than jump over obstacles they're responsible for powering the entire event from the school to the lights inside the
