even the terminator. have been driven from their homes. the 405 freeway in los angeles the latest fronts in the california wildfires early monday morning a new fire broke out here sweeping through the hills. thousands of people were forced to flee as the fire scorched the wealthy west side of the city authorities urged residents to heed the warnings and get out. if you're in the mandatory evacuation zone and you're still there watching this you're an idiot get the hell out it's way too dangerous people that stay behind are just a danger in themselves and not helping the worst affected area is sonoma county in northern california 88000 homes here are in danger 4000 firefighters are battling to get the blaze under control but there is new hope after days of strong winds
8:03 am
conditions have improved. but today's focus continues to be perimeter control and structure protection especially during those 24. we currently have conditions but time is of the essence forecasters are warning that this is just a brief rest bite wins us it's a pick up and fan the flames once more. we're starting to get ready for those another red flag vent all right now it looks like that's going to start sometime mid day tuesday or wednesday morning so we've got a 24 right now and then we're going to go into another critical period. it's now a race against time a battle against the blazes before that next critical period begins. for the very latest let's cross over to jason kemp and down you know he's a reporter with n.b.c. news radio and he joins us from los angeles thanks for being with us jason let's
8:04 am
start with what's happening where you are in l.a. our prior 5 years there are any closer to getting that blaze under control right now the getting fires only at about 5 percent containment but what they're doing as we speak is hitting it with everything that they've got the brief window period where the winds are pretty still at the moment i was just outside and you can still smell the smoke you can still kind of taste it there still ash falling from the sky but firefighters are definitely getting in there and they're using water dropping helicopters overnight and just hitting it with as much fluid as honest on the get these flames out before the winds start to kick up later today i gather that many homes are threatened by the l.a. fire including some belonging to celebrities what can you tell us about. these are multiplying multimillion dollar homes that are being threatened right now about $3000.00 people are under mandatory evacuation orders like you said including the
8:05 am
bron james and arnold schwarzenegger those are just 2 of the celebrities that live in that area and that's really where kind of the elite live you know if you're on the ground to john and it's worse now where you've got bucks for days so you're really looking at some some maintenance that are being destroyed i think about 8 ohms have already been destroyed in that area due to the getty fire and firefighters are doing structure. assessments as they're able to get into some of the hot spots where yesterday they were unable to get in and assess the damage because it was just too dangerous ok so that's the situation around l.a. what about further north in sonoma county what's the situation there. massive blaze massive fire 60 some odd 1000 acres have been completely destroyed it looks about like on 100 structures have been destroyed that includes 20 homes in the town of geir is still and then almost level that entire town very small town if
8:06 am
they're in sonoma county and this is just north of san francisco a very heavily wooded area so there's a lot of fuel and there's a lot of brush that is just going up in flames firefighters are trying again just like they are down here in southern california they do the same thing up in northern california using this time where the winds are really low and using every resource available jason do authorities know on how these powers are being started . so it looks like a power company pacific gas and electric may be responsible for the cage fire that's burning up in sonoma county down here in santa ana california it looks like a tree branch may have been knocked off of a tree due to the eye winds and it hit a power line and then that's what started been getting fire now this is not been confirmed but as of right now that's what they're looking at up north in p.g. and e. they've been responsible for several fires because their infrastructure is
8:07 am
a 100 years old and it's just old it's antiquated and so when you get wind gusts of up to 809100 miles an hour in some spots it knocks these power lines off and they hit the vegetation and that's what sparks a grass fire then you've got a live fire and so power company has been shutting power after people and that's really getting people upset so today everybody's got power but that may change by about noon or so in northern california and definitely by early in the evening by for southern cal on jason thank you very much for bringing us up to date that was reporter jason kemp and tony out in los angeles. now he said he'd rather die in a ditch than asked to delay bragg's it but british prime minister boris johnson has now agreed to a brace of extension until january 31st he's also been trying to persuade parliament to agree to a snap election in december johnson lost that boat on monday but undeterred he will
8:08 am
try again today to convince opposition parties to support a general election he's hoping to capitalize on public anger over bricks. can you that's the nation 5 ended this week this was the day boris johnson has pledged to deliver bragg's it by the end of october my job is to get us out on october 31st and that is what we believe we are not committing to all of us leaving the european union. all october through eagerly and clearly there's lots. there were more than a few obstacles on the road to breaks it and plenty of hostility outside and inside parliament. with a new parliament ignore sooner had he agreed to delete a brags than he was at the dispatch box pushing for a snap election one process to get hurt. by december 12th and then go to
8:09 am
the people despite his pleas he couldn't muster anywhere near enough support because the majority required has not been reached for not have it for the opposition an election is a gamble he would rather not take. thank you mr speaker. the reason i am so cautious is quite simply because i do not trust the prime minister he said unconvinced and undetailed johnson says he'll make a fresh attempt on tuesday. because speaker of the house colonel any longer keep the country 400000000 families and businesses cannot plan for the future as night fell it was a future that looted likely to involve a ballot box with hints that smaller opposition parties may be ready to back johnson's call in just hours the united kingdom could well be in campaign mode no
