this is d.w. news lawyer from by name israel's highest court upholds the deportation of a leading human rights activist omar shakir is accused of supporting a boycott of israel over its treatment of the palestinians human rights watch says it's an attempt to silence critics also coming up a flamboyant former trump advisor goes on trial on charges of obstructing justice or just stone was investigated in the probe into russian meddling in the 2016 u.s. election. and the mistreat oil spill polluting beaches in brazil tortie say that the scale of the disaster is arms precedented and the cleanup will cost billions
5:01 pm
but they still don't know where the oil is coming from and they are people that change the world order marking 30 years since the fall of the berlin wall a week of celebrations is underway here in the german capital we will pull from the church which became the focal point of the peaceful revolution. by man and a home free glad you could join me israel supremes court has upheld a government order expanding a rights activist accused of supporting a boycott of the country over its treatment of palestinians now rejecting an appeal by omar shakira local director of human rights watch the court said it did not find evidence to overturn a decision not sure knew his work visa he's been given 20 days to leave the country human rights watch says that the deportation order isn't. attempt to silence
5:02 pm
criticism of the occupation of the palestinian territory. and joining us now from jerusalem is a lusha king himself thank you very much for joining us this evening now the supreme court has rejected your appeal and you've been given 20 days to leave the country how did you feel when you learned of the decision. this decision is entirely keeping with the netanyahu government systematic attempt to silence human rights advocacy it comes at a time in which many other rights activists have been denied entry including representatives of the united nations israeli and palestinian groups have been maligned face travel bans even arrests but what's new about this decision is it really puts the court stamp on that government campaign to shut down human rights advocacy this decision is really bigger than about one person or one organization but it really goes to the heart of israel's commitment to basic democratic values
5:03 pm
there are in essence saying that free expression israel today does not include basic advocacy for human rights and that's a chilling message to the israeli interior ministry accused of supporting the palestinian led boycott movement against israel what grounds did they get. the court in essence said that human rights watch is work we document abuses of governments in nearly $100.00 countries across the world we also document abuses by companies and in the context of the occupied west bank we have found that companies that operate in settlements invariably contribute to the rights of us and we've called for companies to respect their rights and to stop carrying out those activities we have of course not taken a position on boycotts if israel had never actually called for a boycott of those companies much less israel proper but this is really but their latest in a series of allegations in
5:04 pm
a 3 year campaign to stifle human rights watch over the work we do documenting rights abuse at the end of the day this is really about trying to say that advocacy for palestinian rights has no place in israel today and can be grounds not only for denial of entry deportation but down the road potentially the basis to further restrict the work of his railing in palestinian groups when you say the climate has changed in recent yes month. it is undeniably changed and i would say the last 5 to 10 years i mean a decision like this would not have been conceivable i think 1520 years ago while the supreme court has often rubber stamped government policies when it comes to settlements and human rights abuses in the west bank for it to sign off on this government's crackdown on on human rights advocacy really is a dangerous sort of escalation what we've seen in recent years is denial of entry to prominent international rights advocates u.n.
5:05 pm
representatives amnesty. palestinian groups that have been tarnished just last week a palestinian staff member amnesty international has issued a travel ban as a punitive measure given their work it's quite clear that the israeli government is hell bent on shutting down independent human rights reporting but it ultimately is going to fail we're going to continue to do the same work covering the same issues and the exact same way whether i'm here or not and we're going to fight to the very last minute not only for me to stay in these next 20 days but to safeguard what remains of the limited space for human rights advocacy and basic criticism or it will have to leave it there for now but thank you very much for your insights. let's take it now to the other stories making news around the walls at least 4 people were killed when security forces opened fire on anti-government protesters in iraq's southern province of bastra this comes a day off the 5 people were reported dead in protests in the country's capital
5:06 pm
baghdad as they called the sweeping political. president has found rouhani says iran will take another step towards violating the international agreement limiting its nuclear program technicians who began injecting gas at centrifuges that enrich uranium and iran started backing away from the daily off the u.s. withdrew and imposed sanctions. at least 3 women and 6 children all u.s. citizens have been killed by a drug cartel by gunman in that cartel in the city of spain northern mexico that's according to officials mexico security minister says that it's likely that the group were targeted accidentally at least 5 children have been taken to hospital for treatment. now a republican strategist and former advisor to u.s. president donald trump has gone on trial accused of obstructing justice roger stone
5:07 pm
was investigated as part of the special counsel probe into russian meddling in the 2016 u.s. elections. like few other political operatives in u.s. history roger stone revels in attention whether it's good or bad. the record. is. a veteran republican strategist whose career goes back more than 40 years roger stone counts former u.s. presidents ronald reagan and richard nixon among his clients his affinity for nixon apparently strong enough for him to get this permanent reminder this ties with donald trump also go back decades in the eighty's stone turned to trump the entrepreneur into a major donor for reagan's campaign and saw in him a potential contender for the white house. i have great affection for trump and the
5:08 pm
trump family i have wanted him to run for president since writing 98 but while dirty tricks stuff and prince of darkness are among the kind of names his critics used to describe him stowe now faces a new one convicted felon. indicted by special counsel robert muller who was investigating russian interference in the 2016 campaign stowe was charged on several counts. oh the central question. the trump campaign that the wiki leaks website was about to publish hacked e-mails supplied by russian spies as possible coordinated campaign to sink trumps democratic rival hillary clinton i will not guilty to these charges i will defeat them or i believe this is a politically motivated investigation of the ruling class is found guilty the political provocateurs could now face jail and this is high profile trial is set to
5:09 pm
test roger stone's long held theory that any publicity is good publicity. correspondent all of a sonnet in washington all of the walk us through the main challenges against roger stone you more detail well hello this is a comeback of the findings of the lollar investigation to some extent that led to criminal charges against several trump advisers and campaign aides and now roger stone of course being one of them and the central question of this trial is of roger stone exploited these in famous e-mails hacked from hillary clinton for political gain of the trunk complain in the 2016 election and roger stone testified before congress of all this in the allegation made against him is that he lied of all the trump campaign's effort to obtain these e-mails and now he's sued for 5 columns of making false statements of congress one count of witness tampering he
5:10 pm
allegedly tried to persuade. another witness. to falsely testify before congress and there's also one count of obstruction of justice all right we'll start as we know has pleaded not guilty but of course that's for the jury to decide if they find him guilty what sentence could he face. right so roger stone is just the 2nd one to plead not guilty by the way of those indicted by mahler he calls it a politically motivated investigation as we've heard in the report so that's the typical trump rhetoric here if he's found guilty on all charges he could face up to 50 years in prison earlier this year the former campaign manager of the trunk campaign paul man of ford faced similar charges but he pleaded guilty in contrast and was convicted only to 7 and a half years in jail so it'll be interesting to follow and see how this turns out for roger stone now wrote just. i guess
5:11 pm
a flash of public drama he's described himself as a dirty trick or in the past any signs of that flamboyance in his testimony so far all right he's a very colorful figure there is one story where roger stone defense team wanted to play a clip of a movie the godfather part 2 at court that laid back and forth tussling with the prosecutors stone essentially wants to make the case that in a text message she sent to a witness he made reference to a character off that film so trying to defend himself by showing film clips which of course is quite unusual in the end he was not allowed to show the film clip only to hand the transcript to the grand jury another story is that he was banned from posting anything on social media while his case is pending because he didn't comply with a court order to not post of all that case and the russian investigation earlier so you can see is very contest of color fully discredits the court also has been close
5:12 pm
friends with president trying for about 40 years and that all certainly sheds a certain light on the president as will write on a sonnet in washington thank you. well authorities in brazil say that an oil spill off the northeast coast is one of the biggest environmental disasters ever to hit the country oil's been washing up for months now with $8300.00 beaches polluted but president jaber sonata is warning the worst is yet to come it's one of the worst oil spills in brazil's history but one that's hard to fully assess from the air or by satellite brazilian authorities say it's impossible to tell how much oil is likely to come ashore and no one's sure who's responsible brazilian president says it's the fault of a greek flight oil tanker and he's asked interpol to investigate but also now are removed environmental safeguards so they say stablish.
5:13 pm
executive order in april got rid of several 100 of those committees in all for their work. and one of those committees was exceptionally the committee to deal with oil spills now brazil's coastal ecosystems its beaches coral a marine life have been devastated. i didn't buy life will be able to flourish and grow like it's always been able to and it affects the food chain it's a community of land and sea species here this is a disaster this oil cannot be allowed to remain. this you are going to save it if the cleanup effort is enormous including government authorities the military and thousands of volunteers because it has to be over $300.00 beaches along 2000 kilometers of coastline must be cleared of crude oil. disaster with this kind of
5:14 pm
oil that can't be detected by satellite has never happened before in brazil or in fact anywhere in the world or. brazil now has multiple environmental disasters playing out at once fires in the amazon a burst toxic mining dam and now this. and now to turkey and a highly controversial down project is nearing completion he needs you dam has been built on the tigris river and it's flooding a huge area now thousands of people have been forced to resettle in dozens of towns and villages will disappear among them is the town of passing one of the walled oldest human settlements. people have lived in haasan cave for thousands of years now the ancient town is being demolished building by building concrete platforms have been set under the centuries old mosque soon the entire structure will be
5:15 pm
moved to higher ground before the entire area is flooded. the tickers river has been rising for weeks several restaurants on the river's edge have already closed some 90 kilometers downstream dam has stopped the rivers flow to form a huge manmade lake that will submerge an area that humans settled millennia ago thousands of people will lose land and homes in the once bustling street where tourists used to shop merchants are now loading up their wares. of course it hurts to leave such a story place if only they'd been able to save house and cave that's what we wanted but this is. a few kilometers to the north a new city is taking shape there hot sun caves mostly kurdish inhabitants can purchase subsidized housing ankara is also preparing a site for historic structures in the hope that tourists will still come to new
5:16 pm
haasan cave when it stands on the edge of the new lake but the residents of haasan caves are skeptical that anyone will come to their town when its ancient attractions like deep below water. really need to tell us more is chris harrington from. good to see you now and i magine that for dortmund i mean confidence will be k. how big a role will mentality i guess they in a snatch will you know when it comes to do it mentality has been an issue just this domestic season in the but it's legal you know they had a string of draws they were questioned about it and then marco royce specifically the captain for dortmund was very adamant about rejecting the idea and just a question in general so i think they're on the right track for 2 big reasons that how they're playing and performing they knocked. the current leaders in the boat as they got out of the german cup and then their last match you know they handed was their 1st defeat which is also quite the feat i think you know considering how the
5:17 pm
pieces of jelly right now often seems to be fiery marco royce's a question ahead of this match but their match tonight against answer is very important they also have to classical 1st byron following this match but in particular this match 1st answer is important because where they are in the standings very tight entered defeated them in the 1st fixture but this one is back it's acknowledged in a park like the 12th man on the pitch for dortmund we have a preview of the report let's take a look. and says believe is a quality union plant has an abundance. it was his brace against. back that dumped them out of the german cup last week and confidence can be contagious that's why the dortmund forward wants his team to come out of their shell when they face in time iran in the champions league. a good team we've scored a lot of goals in the. and that's when i believe that we should respect the defense
5:18 pm
but as a team we do not have to hide very soon with too much of them for posting was a needle in to me now on the italian team pace with character and the defense has been tough to break this season but playing in dortmund is always a challenge. you're forgetting that we have to be very careful and pay close attention it's very important for us in the way we will be playing in an electric atmosphere to go. home support will boost confidence the fans will hope to push their team one step closer to qualifying for the champions league knockout stages. all right kristin to put you on the spot what's your prediction for the match you know i'm going to go with the home side i'm going to go a dog they desperately need to win just because how tight it is in the champions league standings we saw some from you and brought in the report you know he's been on fire he scored a brace for by the german cup so james and so on company meant to win this match or i'm going to write it down and hold you to it let's talk about another german side
5:19 pm
in action then take that traveling to st petersburg of course face is that it i mean i've been on far recently do you think they can keep that momentum going in the champions league i think definitely they can you know for one reason they are in russia but zenith hasn't defeated a german side on their home soil in the last 3 outings and when you consider who is on fire i mean it is on the wall you know behind us he's been on fire they scored 14 goals in the last 2 mout matches out of those team over himself has netted 5 goals and 5 assists you know i think that momentum is on their side as well because you know they're on fire right now and i think that considering where they are at the group right now they can make a decisive lead over zenith who trailed in their 2nd right now in the champions league group so you know all my faith is behind the bulls of life's fly high in cost and trouble in russia all right chris harrington thanks a lot. and his check now some of the other stories making headlines at this hour
5:20 pm
yemen's saudi backed government has signed a power sharing deal with a separatist group that is backed by the united arab emirates the group known as the 7 transitional council has been fighting for the government for control of the city of aden but this was despite being part of the coalition with the government to fight iran back to you rebels. firefighters in lagos nigeria are battling a fire at a huge market shopkeepers have been throwing goods from top of floors and trying to battle the flames while fire engines struggle to reach the scene. the u.s. has formally notified at the united nations that it's pulling out of the paris climb to cremate president trump announced the move 2 years ago but monday was the 1st day that the process could actually start the u.s. is the only country to quit deal. well across the german capital festivities are underway marking 30 years since the fall of the burning wall in all that historic

night the 9th of november 1909 the unthinkable happened east germany's communist regime open the border the announcement allowed its citizens to safety cross to the west for the 1st time in 3 decades now in all those years crossing without permission was often fatal hundreds of people were killed trying to escape the country but with the burden rolled down friends and family could finally reunite without fear paving the way for the 2 germany to do the same not last or. and for more on the celebrations this week let's talk to our reporter david leavitt's who is out and about in berlin for us welcome david where are you and why . hey how and i'm in front of the good seaman the church in what was just 30 years ago communist east berlin and i'm here because this church played a major role in the peaceful revolution that led to the fall of the berlin wall and
5:22 pm
the reunification of the 2 germany's just 30 years ago to this day there was a concert held just behind me of beethoven's 3rd symphony and at the end of that concerts the conductor said the wall has to go and there was a huge cheer and the crowd went out onto the streets in impromptu protests which at that time were still very brave we're talking just months after the massacres at tiananmen square in beijing people didn't know what was going to happen and people also didn't realize that just 4 days later the wall was going to fall now that wasn't the 1st time that the gets a mini church played a role in the peace movement that led up to that event the church in general here in east germany was a sort of opposition force to the government which was officially atheist and it was a space where people could come together and talk frankly about politics and organize themselves and in the month particularly that led up to the fall of the berlin wall
5:23 pm
the space behind me it was a sea of candles it was filled with candles people holding vigil for protestors program pro-democracy protesters who had been arrested and were being held in prison by the regime and that movement started pretty small at 1st there were only about 50 people who came but soon there were thousands and they weren't just church members they weren't just people who identified themselves as political this became very much a public movement let's have a look at those events from 30 years ago. in october 989 think if 70 church in what was then east berlin became the center of the revolution communist east germany was celebrating its. 30th anniversary and there was still rousing applause for the country's leaders but at the same time the streets were slowly filling up with protesters. and. east german police and members of the country's notorious intelligence service
5:24 pm
brutally beat the demonstrators. on this night thousands some of them wounded fled into the safety of the church there were fears that the church would be storm. but the police didn't intervene a new wind was blowing from the east under mikhail gorbachev moscow was no longer willing to back the use of force against demonstrators the protest movement based in the guest them in the church was allowed to continue with candles courage and nonviolent protests these demonstrators paved the way for the peaceful revolution and the fall of the wall. so david a truly historic place and as we come back to you i think i can see some lights down thing across that church now what can we expect that is the thing.
5:25 pm
well one of there's quite a projection display on the search that is just starting out there are you can't see them yet but there are all kinds of images of the times of protesters at that time in that period leading up to the fall of the berlin wall where no one knew what was going to happen but everyone could sense that something was changing and that it was going to be historic and to mark that historic concert that was here 30 years ago that i told you about just a while ago the one and only patti smith the godmother of punk rock has come to berlin from the united states to give a concert it's also old out i just saw a sign here that says if it was possible for the berlin wall to fall can it also be possible to get a ticket for the patti smith concert in the person wrote their number so i am expecting to see lots of crowds very soon as the projections get underway and people come out to see the patti smith concert it just doesn't get any more colin that david leavitt's for that very poignant. thank you so much. well all
