a building is the 1st student deaths since the start of the anti-government campaign pro-democracy activists vow to escalate their protest. to. another humphrey thanks for joining me we begin with some breaking news firefighters in germany have rescued around $35.00 people after an explosion at a mine that's according to local officials now the incident happened in the town of touch and todd in the east of the country the miners were trapped some 70 meters underground but able to find shelter in a safety area at least 2 people are believed to have been injured in the blast and for more on this we can bring in our correspondent kate brady kate what more can you tell us about the 35 people that were trapped in the mine and how are they
12:02 pm
now. well the good news is that we've heard just within the last half hour from police that all of the workers who were trapped in that security area were indeed rescued by fire services there and. what we know is that they were actually able to escape after that explosion happened to the to that security area that i just mentioned there but we have since heard reports that there are injuries 2 of those workers are said to have been injured in the explosion one is said to have suffered light injuries another one is said to have suffered some serious injuries but we're also waiting for more information from all sources but the latest right now is that those workers that have been trapped that were trapped in that security area some 700 meters underground have now indeed been rescued kate what about the incident itself i mean is there anything known about the reasons for this explosion. of
12:03 pm
course an investigation into the reason behind that explosion will be launched and we're expecting to have more information within the next hour or so there is a press conference planned interestingly the mine was actually closed down in the 1980 s. and the nowadays the what the workers actually do is basically fill in the cavities which have been left behind there after some 80 years of mining so they dispose of mineral waste and then they basically stop the surface from collapse and so a way yet to find out exactly how the explosion happened while that work was being carried out and we'll bring you some more information as the day goes on all right kate brady thanks a lot. well france's president of money one michael has taken all the european leaders by surprise by criticizing nato and an interview with the economist magazine michael said that the alliance was experiencing for a day now he says it is being undermined by
12:04 pm
a lack of coordination and by the unpredictability of us president donald trump chancellor angela merkel and the head of nato yen shelton that have rejected their monks. part of the berlin wall is displayed outside nato headquarters in brussels 30 years after it fell yet in stoltenberg it's meant to be celebrating the anniversary of the victory over communism but instead he's declaring his alliance isn't dead. nato is strong. united states north america and europe we do more together than got done for decades. one of nato's most important members has spoiled the party in a historic week for the alliance emmanuel mccall is calling into question some of nato's founding principles. in a magazine interview the french president said the mutual defense pact was in danger of breaking down. he said what we are currently
12:05 pm
experiencing is the brain death of nato and you have no coordination whatsoever of strategic decision making between the united states and its nato allies its last month's events in syria that have worried 1st the alliance's largest member the united states announced a troop pullout without consulting its allies in another alliance member turkey marched into northern syria despite the fact he meant objections of berlin and paris they're worried it threatens european security. but does this all add up to a threat or just a blip in nato history nato and germany insisted in berlin that the alliance is still alive and well. even if we do have problems and even if we do disagree on the german perspective you know it's very much in our interest it's our security alliance. for its part where lynn has been signaling an increased commitment to the alliance visiting trainees soldiers defense minister and cape camp said she's in
12:06 pm
favor of making nato has 2 percent spending mandatory she at least is optimistic about the western alliance even as other members question its future. well as free and open a school correspondent. thomas some stinging remarks from mccall is germany in any position to help put the alliance back on track. on its own probably not but germany does have political clout and it knows that and a such germany has defended nato on a range of occasions and he has also done that now as you just saw from. stressing how important the alliance is for germany how indispensable the alliance is in fact and that is something that germany has repeated and will probably repeat as well when criticism comes towards the nato another question altogether helena is whether germany has the military clout to have any influence and that is a big question here in germany not the least because the german military is facing
12:07 pm
very serious structural problems certainly thomason all not points the german defense minister is talking about germany shouldering more global responsibility when it comes to security but we are not hearing much from chancellor merkel how much support is there in germany for strengthening the military. this is a divisive issue in germany has been a divisive issue for a long time and in fact there are members in the german government coalition who are very wary of those remarks by the german defense minister who stressed that germany's role internationally should for example b.s. part of the united nations or us part of nato as we've been discussing above all germany should at least discuss its priorities with other countries as well there are also other politicians who have stressed germany's military role should not be increased at germany's role internationally should be increased in other areas for example development or conflict prevention those are areas where somebody would prefer germany's role to increase instead of increasing its military defense
12:08 pm
capabilities and now so is the u.s. . germany's taking part in events this week make marking the 30th anniversary of the full all the will now he delivered a speech in berlin today this have a listen to what he said that i want to come back to. our 2 democracies the united states and germany possess the abundant political and economic capital and the power can only be garnered by free societies we have a duty each of us to use all we have to defend what was so hard one. in $776.00 in 1945 and in 1909 we have to do it together we did together because it's not easy and doing it alone is impossible the thomas clearly considered he would step it can this symbolic visit by the u.s. secretary of state do anything to patch up what is currently a very strange relationship. speech by mr pompeo on the question and answer session
12:09 pm
the followed revealed exactly the goal behind his visit on the one hand to stress the call on values to share the united states and germany of they have shared also for a very long time as we just saw in his remarks there but at the same time some of the key differences now were made evident for example in the issue of trade that was absolutely evident that the united states and germany do not see eye to eye is there so on the one hand you clearly say the mystical had the intention to show those historic ties between the united states and germany but at the same time you contacted the fact that the united states and germany are facing difficulties and that there are many issues where they do not see eye to eye you know quite a long list indeed and we know that later today pompei will meet german chancellor angela merkel and defense minister kagame bow in berlin how do you expect that to play out they will probably have time to discuss old hose issues that we've just been mentioning in fact you know the issue of defense will probably be an important topic to be discussed between the different leaders and in particular the idea of
12:10 pm
an e-card come to increase germany's military role internationally those are all issues that will most likely come up in those meetings again i do expect that there will be some time as well for stressing how important the relationship is between both countries and how both countries share values even though in this particular time they also have the difficulties we've already mentioned political correspondent tom aspire thank you and now some of the other stories making news around the world. billionaire michael bloomberg is considering entering the 2020 presidential race warning that the current field of candidates is ill equipped to defeat donald trump new york man has not formally announced his bed but he's expected to run in the democratic primary in the state of alabama. dozens of bush fires are raging in the small strayer forcing the closure of a highway linking sydney and brisbane the blazes have tools through tens of

thousands of hectares in queensland and new south wales strong winds and high temperatures are fanning the flames in some areas. in iraq 10 anti-government protesters have been killed in baghdad and the port city of basra security forces have used live rounds and tear gas in the latest disturbances that began in october if the government corruption and a lot of chips. well hong kong university student who reportedly fell from a building during clashes between police and protesters has died other students have held a memorial gathering for their colleagues the events leading up to the incident all still unclear but it's believed that the student fell from a call pod off that police fired tear gas during a protest that was last weekend has been in a coma since being found. and protest leader joshua walker has responded to the death of the student his or he had to say. we mourn together and we urge hall of

people where blacks are shit together on the day and tomorrow we show our side our team and unity and now is that high for the government to set up the independent investigation on the clash we need to know as he put truth and justice and which is really insane and on reasonable for how the government allowed the polish attempted murder hold on people well fully his let's bring in correspondent matt hispania in hong kong good to see this he has tell us what is known about the circumstances that led to the students death. while he fell from a park deck that is known we do not know what happened inside the park check. there were clashes around this area i am no near the park tick at the moment at that moment on day one and police and protesters were chasing each other and somehow he
12:13 pm
went into that building there were. people saying that he fled from tear gas there were also people saying that he was chased by the police into that building and that he fell while being chased by them there are also rumors that he had been pushed all kinds of humans but there's nobody very little evidence on anything that happened there even though the security footage security camera footage has also not captured his the moment where he fell so we do not know really what caused him to fall from there but what we know is that he's the 1st student who died in the course of these clashes that have been happening during the whole summer so this is a highly emotional moment in hong kong and people are angry they're pointing fingers at the police saying that the police we just heard joe sure won't cause his death yes and on that point have we heard from the police in response to that.
12:14 pm
they are denying that they have anything to do with that they are there it's a bit unclear at what moment there were policeman inside this car park that even eating but it is unclear at what moment so a lot of the explanations that the police are giving is we have entered at this and this moment then the footage comes up that shows people policeman entering earlier than that they're basically saying they're still investigating but they see no. evidence that the police had been involved or have been inside the building at the moment of his death so that is what they are saying at the moment but his wording here in hong kong for us thanks and we'll spain is to hold another general election on a sunday the 4th in 4 years now in the last round of voting in april the socialist party of prime minister pedro sanchez won the largest share of the vote fell short
12:15 pm
of a majority in parliament now sanchez failed to form a government so in this weekend's election he's hoping to increase his share of the vote but it's far from certain that his strategy will end up paying off. me gail. is fighting to defend his future he's campaigning for the socialist party p.s.l.e. it's leading the polls but likely to fall short of an outright majority going to. easton's for the aspirations of us young people who want a world with more social justice. with fighting for better working conditions against climate change and we support feminism. the 30 year old has been an activist for 8 years he feels that these elections could be more crucial than previous polls. first but the center right p.p.r.
12:16 pm
overtake us and come 1st the likely team up with the far right vox which is predicted to come in 3rd. and that's really scary as they would put in place inhumane policies against women p.t. people and migrants. we need to convince as many people as possible to vote for us. but that won't be easy especially since a supreme court verdict on catalan separatist leaders lead to violent backlash by independent supporters it looks like voters are set to punish the socialists conciliatory approach and to reward the tough stance of the far right vox party that's especially peeling to many young people. i don't know if there are more 40 years ago we handed over catalonia to the enemies of the nation who are now controlling its education system police and media. we need to send in all our
12:17 pm
available police to suffocate this revolt let it take back control and suspend autonomy status. things vox. is just what spain needs not only in catalonia. we finally have a party that speaks its mind without fear and ignores the rules of political correctness. we young people can finally say out loud again that we love our country. doesn't bow to this false feminism which is so one sided that we are the real feminists even though we're right wing we are pro-life and defend family values. the 24 year old is still hoping right wing parties will get the upper hand in these elections meanwhile miguel is optimistic that the socialists can still boost their share of the vait he's banking on the roughly one 3rd of voters who haven't yet made up their mind and if that isn't enough
12:18 pm
a different approach might be needed. politicians will need to take their share for sponsibility if we aren't able to form a coalition the other party should give their tactical support to the front runner so that the party can work as a minority government. that might indeed been acceptable compromise for many spaniards because the one thing that voters seem to agree on is that the political deadlock in spain finally needs to end. when he joins me now from madrid at least it is the last day of campaigning in the spanish election what is going on there today. well today the parties will hold their closing rallies either here in the capital madrid or in barcelona in the capital of catalonia an issue the culture learning in the independence has been kind of the main issue in the election campaign obviously politicians will try to convince those voters who haven't made up their mind dead according to polls polls that's about the 3rd of
12:19 pm
the voters and also they will try to motivate people to actually turn out to vote analysts expect that the elections on june the elections on sunday there might be a record rate of abstention because people are just fed up with politicians here they don't know if this election will actually end the deadlock so politicians are really trying to make of a to motivate them and tell them please go out turn out today so that we can and the deadlock in the country as you mentioned of course customary independence is a big issue in this election but it's not the only one so what else is on voters' minds. well spaniards are preoccupied about other things 1st of all the economy which is slowing down unemployment is still very high in spain and also the issue of gender violence spain has been debating about new measures to protect better protect women from gender violence over the past 2 years but the country
12:20 pm
hasn't had a fully functioning government for more than a year now so this thing really hasn't moved forward when it comes to spain's legislation that has been a debate about this between different different different political parties during the election campaign with most of men saying we need to better protect women and one of the far right books actually saying we need to better protect men but oversee the main issue the biggest issue in the campaign still has been the one on catalonian independence which has been dividing the country and also the political parties so for many people it's very difficult to see how after these elections the country will become back together and also the politicians will come back together to form a functioning government absolutely i mean it certainly has been a tumultuous past year we've seen 4 elections in as many years so with all that in mind how likely is it that this election will end up yielding a stable government. the idea obviously was to increase the
12:21 pm
socialist share when the petro sanchez the interim prime minister called election but that's now less than likely he's actually probably going to lose seats in parliament and it will be very difficult for him to form a coalition many analysts are now saying well this might not be the last election spain will have seen in 4 years there might be another one coming just in a few months nice and there is reporting for us on the final day of campaigning in the spanish elections she's in madrid thanks lisa. we're watching the news still to come playing day in south korea while it's why some people want to experience this day ahead of time. but 1st to today where president sebastian pinera has announced extra powers for police to crack down on ongoing protests now the president's measures include a ballot on protesters wearing suits to mosques their identities intensified aerial surveillance and strengthened police intelligence she is experiencing the most

modern unrest in decades with 20 deaths so far the protests were spiked by a hike in public transport fads but they've broadened out to into social and economic inequality. and of course one in it she did it called clearly it's has more. it's been a day of unpopular decisions for. thursday afternoon he announced a series of measures aimed at curbing looting and violent demonstrations in what he said was an attempt at restoring public order and safety that didn't go down well with protesters though they perceived it as a pat on the back for the police force and police force bear in mind that is being accused of cracking down by a lengthy and peaceful protesters and committing grave human rights violations he also summoned the so-called security council a gathering of the country's highest ranking civil and military authorities in order to inform them about his new security agenda but even those who took part in
12:23 pm
the meeting said it was a loss of time and a move in the wrong direction what made that move even more unpopular was the fact that the security council is a form established by the 980 constitution a constitution that dates back to times when chile lived under dictatorship and a constitution that chileans are desperately trying to get rid of so all in all not a good day for the president. of course one of their reporting for us from santiago now sometimes life gets so stressful you really need to get away from it all now in south korea you can take it to quite an extreme bias kate going to your own coffin that's the ritual a popular healing center in seoul ranges he says that 20000 people have signed up to see what death can teach them about life. preparing for death or at least a rehearsal choi jin q is a university student some might think a young age to be contemplating death he came to seoul hugh on hearing center for
