guns on its way this place and this day remind us of a great historical achievement. and they remind us that today we europeans are united in joy. so and so i'm going to find the chapel of reconciliation was built on the former death strip where the east german government demolished a church 4 years before the wall fell this chapel hosts regular ceremonies in honor of those who died during germany's years of division. is a in that i would like to honor those who were killed near the wall because they sought freedom. i honor the 75000 people who were imprisoned because they attempted to flee east germany in the 9th of don't ember is a day of destiny a day of horrible and also joyful moments in history that reminds us that hate

racism and anti-semitism must be fought. and. then a moment of solemn thoughts for the victims of a divided germany. well d.w. has been covering today's commemoration events in the german capital and our political correspondent thomas farrow is standing by at the berlin wall memorial thomas it's kind of a gray and rainy day in berlin you've been watching the commemoration of events taking place what have you seen today. we're standing here mary i'm out in one of the main main morial for the burning waldo memorial at the barren hour in the center of the german capital and this is one of the most important memorials i've just said on this is such the place where the big political commemoration took
2:05 pm
place earlier this morning with the participation not only of german chancellor angela merkel and german president funk. but also of the leaders of those 4 eastern european countries that we saw in our report are now such the leaders and not only the leaders but also young people here refer to the political and the personal limitations not only of the berlin wall sucked of those 28 years that germany was divided but as well that 9th on november 989 the date of the wall fell and what came afterwards so our socks what we discovered today what we realized today right here at the piano watching morial was in a way a commemoration in various levels of commemoration in a personal level but also commemoration in a political level and something else that i believe was particularly important is the fact that lessons can be drawn from the 9th of november and that was something that was also stressor day particular by the young people attending what they can
2:06 pm
learn from that very important day and what that means not only for them but also for the future of germany and thomas also the chancellor herself talked a lot about the lessons that can be learned from november 9th she gave a speech during the memorial what was her central message. the chancellor is obviously in a very special position to talk about the berlin wall she was born into how my book but then grew up in the eastern part of the country in eastern germany and just thought she experienced firsthand what it was like to live in a divided country and that's something that is very important not only for her but also for germany as well to have a german chancellor who grew up in the eastern part of the country i mean bob speech i'm going to call not only mentioned the personal implications of living you know divided the but it was actually meant for many people by the way this memorial here is particularly important also in dr regard because the wall ran just across
2:07 pm
the street dividing families and friends but the german chancellor also stressed what that meant politically but she could also the role that those 47 european countries played in stressing once again and by the way again that's something that other people also stressed that the but in wall of the fall of the berlin wall was not only a result of those demonstrations in ny paid or what happened here in berlin it was also an international situation an international development on a such an international development that warrants to be celebrated today and what i'm talking about celebrating the organizers of the events here mention that it was time for a celebration but it was also a time for reflection and discussion on that is something that has also happened today very clearly at the back now is cost of immoral all right thomas spare reporting for us from the berlin wall memorial thank you very much. and the special coverage continues with documentaries and live events including

a historic day. by the supreme court he said it was a golden chapter in the history of the indian tradition and interestingly. also drew a parallel between this verdict and the fall of the berlin wall he said didn't know the date when the berlin wall fell and to communities reuniting people of 2 communities and he says this data gives us a lesson to move forward together well right despite the hopes that this decision is going to bring peace security has been tightened in indiana what are the fears of a backlash that's right i mean we've seen massive security arrangements in place today in india and not just in the northern states to put up with where the has located but literally across india across many many indian states cozzens of extra troops have been deployed today that is in addition to

local police who have been trained to contain riots the police there are also very carefully monitoring social media in a bid to quash rumors and the infamy tree posts and they're also very wary off you know the celebrations by hindu groups we're hearing reports that in some residents you know both firecrackers and disrupted sweets when the verdict came out but they were persuaded to go back by the police and the background to all the supports is that the parties are very hard to avoid a repeat of the kind of violence that we saw in 1902 in the aftermath of the demolishing of the 16th century mustered by in the mobs and if you remember that spock deadly riots across india killing more than 2000 people. well sonia this ruling of course in favor of the hindus comes at a time when there's a hindu nationalist government in power how do minorities feel about all of this.

well you know the building of the dam temple has really long been a rallying point for the hindu nationalists b j p do you know in the ninety's in the ninety's in the ninety's the beach would be really head of the political campaign on the plank of building the wrong temple at the disputed site eventually led to the culmination off that by land some to demolish an off the mosque and ever since come to power we have seen repeated calls to build a temple for members off the beach at the same time or to remember that some of the b. to be a country facing trial for their involvement in the violence of 1993 so against that backdrop i think it's fair to say that though many muslim groups today have accepted this word that there is a sense of unease and disquiet in the community muslim speaking very insecure especially since the beat it became you know religious and social tensions have really deepened under the scope of. the correspondents on a filmmaker reporting from delhi thank you. to hong kong now where
