this is good of you to sly for berlin hong kong's leader warns that the escalating violence will not make the government yield to pressure the warning comes after a police shot and seriously injured demonstrators in the latest pro-democracy protests it is the 2nd shooting by police since the protests began in june. also coming up turkey says it's not a hotel for islamic state members as it starts sending foreign militants captured in syria back to europe and the u.s. spain socialist celebrate but the latest election fails to break the country's long
12:01 pm
running political stalemate prime minister pedro sanchez his party falls short of in the jordie and faces a strong challenge from the right. plus he's big and yellow and 50 years old age catches up with all of us even big bird and the rest of the sesame street crew but they show no signs of retiring from entertaining and educating the world's children. i'm sumi so misconduct thank you for joining us hong kong's leader has warned that the government will not give in to ask a lady in violence and pro-democracy demonstrations but kerry also said she would spare no effort to find ways to end the violence the police have toughened their response to the demonstrations in recent weeks on sunday a policeman shot a protester the man a since undergone surgery and is said to be in critical condition. the hong kong
12:02 pm
government denying what it's called online rumors saying police have been ordered to recklessly use their firearms a calling that allegation totally false and malicious the police have said the shooting the 2nd since the protests began in june will be fully investigated. earlier we spoke to activist joshua wang let's listen to what he had to say people in hong kong are fighting for democracy if they're worried you being for a right which means that that guy might be arrested prosecuted and lobby in prison before riot police brutally honest a citizen into. in this crew in italy to attack general public they would never be r.s. prosecute or pay any price. well let's go to our correspondent in hong kong muchas belling is standing by force their hand the ts what do you make of that statement by the activist joshua wang were furring to another incident were a man with supposedly a set on fire who was criticizing the protests. what
12:03 pm
we know is that the man is now in the hospital he seems to be in a critical condition as is the protest or was shocked this morning by fire from the police this is of course a significant escalation that we have seen today from both sides both of them both of the videos exist they are very clear there seems little doubt about them. but we have a 3rd incident where a policeman was driving a motorcycle into the crowd trying to hit protesters. all this is of course not looking very good to what joshua long said of course we do not know whether the man who. will set this man on fire will be prosecuted but we can count on the police will try to find him and prosecute him he was and.
12:04 pm
what protesters are unhappy about is that the police is not held accountable they are demanding an investigation into the police and independent investigation from the very beginning this has been one of the demands kerry lamb has come out to do today and she has said again that she will not give in to that saying that if you give in to one of their demands they will be out on the street and they will be getting more violent because they will feel rewarded by food for their violence but what she did not mention of course is that not giving in to their demands has done nothing to pacify the situation mathias what is clear is that the situation in the violence really is ask lending and as you mentioned hong kong's leader kerry lamb spoke at a press conference earlier what else is she say about the sas collation. well she has condemned it that's what she said from the very beginning she said that she
12:05 pm
had trust in the police force and in the investigation by the body the people police complaints body that is existing and that she has handed with investigation vestey gauging the police and she has been a very. in a manner that she will find means to stop the violence but she will not go into details so basically she hasn't said nothing new today except that she had another reason to come out and to repeat what she has been saying during these past 4 months correspondent that he is spending a speaking to us from hong kong thank you. turkey has started sending islamic state fighters who were captured in syria back to their home countries the fighters have been held at deportation centers in turkey and according to the country's interior ministry the 1st to be repatriated is a u.s. citizen a german combatant will be sent back today as well with more to be repatriated
12:06 pm
later this week let's get more on the story with our correspondent dorian jones he's standing by for us in istanbul hi dorine what more can you tell us about what the turkish government is doing here. well that's right the interior ministry spokesman that is close been speaking saying that one american citizen has already been to ported today there will be another german and a danish citizen are expected be returned later on today back to their countries and on thursday it will be 7 more german citizens who again linked to the islamic state will be returned and possibly 11 french citizens also 2 germans are expected later this week as well so this is part of turkey's commitment to return back foreign fighters to their homeland now this does pose a particular diplomatic tension be given the fact that some of these fighters are believed to have had their citizenship or announced by their countries that they are from the turkish interior minister sort of and so louis been very clear he said
12:07 pm
he sees it as nothing more than diplomatic ploy he says turkey will not be a hotel for these islamist terrorists and it's up to european countries to take their responsibility so there is potentially a looming diplomatic tension could be lower aroud that could be brewing over this but clear these these islamic state fighters have to go back home what about the timing of this story is happening now. well this is all in that turkey has had believed to be thousands possibly a few 100 foreign fighters linked to islamic state in a jail but also turkey is now be involved in its military operation into syria it has taken control of a strip around 120 kilometers 30 kilometers deep and now in that area there are presence of islamic state fighters and which some are believed to be foreign nationals in turkey possibly in talks with washington and after countries in the region could be taking control of all of our prisons held of islamic state fighters
12:08 pm
of which they believed to be hundreds if not thousands of islamic state fighters in those camps along korea's clear all those countries where they are from have to take them back whether they have a citizenship or not are encouraged clear that it's not a hotel and doesn't expect syria to be a hotel for these fighters and our correspondent there in john speaking to us from istanbul thank you well turkey's move to repatriate islamic state jihadists comes as more evidence is being uncovered of the group's crimes in syria here's more more and more mass graves of people killed by islamic state a being found in syria thousands of soldiers and civilians were murdered while i asked controlled territory that often for allegedly breaking islamic law many i asked fighters and their families have been held in detention camps run by syrian kurdish forces. in the united states have been calling on germany to take back a german i has detainees. americans and the syrian kurds have
12:09 pm
removed a serious threat to our domestic security if they ask germany to take back 25 years under a few women we shouldn't dismiss very quest that is exactly what the german government is doing. foreign minister heiko ma says readmitting german i asked members would represent a danger to germany if there's not enough evidence to charge them with any crimes. the problem is for months we need information about the relevant individuals in order to launch an investigation of criminal proceedings or keep them in detention it's a difficult process for experts argue that u.s. and german investigators have already gathered plenty of evidence in syria by questioning witnesses and suspects to informants who wonder if there should be enough information but perhaps the government is frightened that any resulting prison sentences would be so brief that those individuals would soon be free again . the turkish offensive in syria has raised the pressure on
12:10 pm
germany to take back a german i asked members suspected of crimes. a number of them have reportedly escaped from detention camps in recent weeks. the security risks. in the people escape and come back to germany at will but the danger is much greater if an orderly repatriation is organized and just as with the knowledge of the security services. it's especially german women detainees who've renounced their allegiance to islamic state who are hoping for a back kind of repatriation they faced abuse and threats from other detainees still loyal to i asked among them is they not gear came from berlin as the strictly the eases it's terrible what crimes i ask has committed in the name of islam and that all i want is to be allowed to come home to my beloved germany it's.
12:11 pm
whether or not zainab here again has committed any crimes she so far not been allowed to return home. but for her and her 2 year old son that's all she hopes for . and we can speak now to our political correspondent. on the story hi max the german government has been skeptical of taking back i asked fighters from syria as the government changed its mind. well the german government has certainly been surprised by the announcement today by turkey a spokesperson of the foreign ministry of germany has said just now in a press conference that they were only informed this morning about the planned repatriation of several german nationals so they have confirmed that germany has confirmed that the planned or petri ations all of german nationals and the
12:12 pm
nationality of these people have been confirmed and therefore the germany is taking these people back to germany as it is the right of their citizens however they have been able to say if there have been any links for these individuals to the terror organization the so-called islamic states so far what we know is that one german nationals to be coming back to germany today another 7 are to be scheduled for thursday the 14th and then potentially another 2 are supposed to coming back on friday the 15th of november and yes so far the german government said they can't confirm the nationality but they cannot say if there's any links to the islamic state but that among those people that there's both men women and potentially children next we know what will happen to these people when they get to germany. well that is the big debate that germany has been talking about a loss in the last couple of months because there's 2 procedures that have to be
12:13 pm
taken a bit separately i looked at a bit separately so one is of course proving the nationality and that can be done with the help of embassies and representations of germany abroad for example in turkey and that has happened as the foreign ministry says in the case of those returning this week that they are confirmed as german nationals and the 2nd step is of course the security assessment and the domestic the interior ministry in germany has been saying that so far they cannot. confirm any risk assessments and so that these people have to be taken in but then of course that then the german authorities in the interior domestic services have to look at if these people pose a threat a security threat because they might have potential links to terror organizations correspondent maximillian a question for us there thank you. let's get a round of now of some other stories making news around the world iraqi security
12:14 pm
forces have killed at least 3 protesters in the southern city of nasiriyah dozens more were injured in new clashes between anti-government protesters and police around the country including in the capital baghdad amnesty international says iraq's crackdown on the protests has descended into a bloodbath. a powerful cyclon as lash northeastern india and bangladesh killing at least a dozen people more than 2000000 residents moved into shelters of the weekend officials say cycling bull bull has already weakened of the worst is over but the storm has left a trail of destruction in the region. the world's busiest online shopping event a single day is well underway in china discounts across a huge range of products give a big boost to spending e-commerce giant alibaba said sales hit $1000000000.00 within the 1st minute that dwarfs similar events like cyber monday in the us. former bolivian president evo morales has lashed out at his country's opposition
12:15 pm
accusing it of staging a coup he resigned on sunday after claiming that he'd won a 4th term in office in last month's election but his victory was overshadowed by claims of fraud which triggered weeks of protests the leftist morales came to power over a decade ago but he was accused of increasingly authoritarian rule. this is how people in the city love pas celebrated the news of change at the top. with fireworks and flags. after almost 14 years in power and battling growing opposition president evo morales took to national television. is the little girl. who is a mentor but i am resigning precisely to put an end to the threats and persecution of those faced by my brothers and sisters in the socialist movement as they use i mean those novels. the announcement by more allas followed
12:16 pm
a to mulch was 24 hours that saw support for him falling away fast 1st bolivia's police abandoning their posts and joining the protests. and then a call from the chief of the military for him to go quote for the good of the country. the turning point was apparently when the organization of american states reported irregularities in just about every aspect it had examined and recommended new elections. it wasn't just more alice who stepped down but also members of his executive when he 1st came into office the former cocoa farmer and the continent's 1st indigenous president had promised to make bolivia a fairer country he tackled inflation established more opportunities for the country's huge indigenous population and also reduced poverty by almost half. but he was also seen to abuse his power. that's not enough and he ran for reelection after refusing to abide by the results of a referendum that opposed
12:17 pm
a forced term. now anger has been replaced by optimism. where free we finally been able to get rid of this dictator i belief we are free now we can say that the people are more united than ever. there really is a god and after doing so much harm to the country ever what alice has left we have to believe in the new river how that new bolivia might look is unclear normally other top ruling politicians would step in until a new president is elected but they too have left office for now though it's a power vacuum that doesn't seem to worry most bolivians. spain's political deadlock looks set to continue and sunday's general election prime minister pedro sanchez the socialists took the largest share of the vote but failed to secure a majority of the parliament the far right vox party made the biggest gains doubling its seats in parliament to become the 3rd largest party spain as have 2
12:18 pm
general elections and a european election already this year. and we can speak to our correspondent bob of asal she's covering the story for us from madrid hi barbara good to see you these elections don't appear to have changed very much so where does spain go from here. where does spain go this is the 1000000 euro question for pedro such as and maybe he should look to motivational speakers if you fail try again try harder and that is probably what he is going to do because the spokesman in the meantime that a proposal to form a government somehow we support of some of the other smaller parties in parliament will be forthcoming soon so he will try again to sort of cobble together a coalition on the left and sort of part of the center and nationalist parties that he has not managed to do in the past there is of course as we know not the way out
12:19 pm
you could look to the biggest opposition party the conservative p p i ask them to step up but that seems to be a hurdle because it would be a 1st in spanish politics that seems to be a hurdle that he's not ready to jump yet barbering mentioned that spain has already had 2 general elections this year and a european election what are people there who have you spoken to make of all of this and what are they expecting from their politicians now. people are completely and totally fed up was this that it's a spectacle they really don't want to have to watch anymore because it was even clear before this voting day this sunday that there was skepticism that the votes of the election would bring a resolution because the polls showed it wouldn't and so it's happened indeed it's become even more difficult to form an election now dead before this ill fated voting runs on sunday so we talked to some people this morning what they make of it
12:20 pm
let's listen in to what they had to say. as a citizen i find it very disappointing that we had to go through these elections because the prime minister was not able to form a government which. has said now there is still no government and no see even if budgets. go home i think you know i think you know it's even more complicated than before but one of the from the fall of the parliament is more fragmented the more the if i didn't know you did i really hope they can form a government and agree on that difficult i mean that's what they're paid for and that's why. it's been a waste of money for just getting the same result. yes it's a disaster i'm really fed up with julia and i'm ashamed for this country. when i was running. so there really seems to be
12:21 pm
a clear message there shape up or get out. barbara you know one of the big winners in the vote on sunday was the far right vox party they surged to become the 3rd largest party in spain how have they managed to garner so much support. it is a real mix of reasons and motives of course and the biggest among them is probably the cuff non-crisis because it's stirred up feelings of nationalism that had been dormant in spain for a for decades nobody really thought about it but the right managed to really sort of pour oil on these fires and sort of gets emotions flowing and now you really hear people here talking about the pride of spain and the unity of spain and issues that really have been sort of not a top of the agenda for quite a while then also of course you have a certain amount of protest voters in there who were fed up with the other parties and said let's just try something else there is this the usual sort of railing against the the perceived idea that political correctness is too strong in this
12:22 pm
country and you have something that might be particularly spanish which is a sort of rollback on on women's rights because the spending has spain has seen a rather record modernization during the last years and so min seem to be standing up now and said this is all going much too far we don't want this and we want to sort of push this spec so it really makes back of motives bought with this box party really wants to go politically what they really want to achieve what their real goals are that is relatively i'm clear so this is mostly about protests and it's mostly about national feelings. have a cell reporting there in madrid thank you. now big bird the cookie monster and the rest of the sesame street gang have been celebrating the 50th birthday of the show that made them international stars sesame street was a revolution in children's t.v.
