apart as president evo morales resigns that follows weeks of protests over a legit lector all fraud but what alex has accused the opposition of staging a coup. plus he's big and yellow and 50 years old age catches up with all of us even big bird and the rest of the sesame street for what they show no sign of retiring from entertaining and educating the world's children. i'm serious so much got to thank you for joining us hong kong's leader has warned that the government will not give in to escalate in violence in pro-democracy demonstrations but kerry lamb also said she would spare no effort and finding ways to end the violence authorities are denying rumors that police have been ordered to use their firearm arms after a protester was shot and wounded on sunday. hey police say the shooting the 2nd
3:02 pm
since the protests started in june will be fully investigated. now and officer and a man dressed in white are locked in a struggle as a man in black approaches at this point the officer raises his gun and shoots him while i was shooting itself is too graphic to show the man then collapses and moments later another officer then seems to be patting him down possibly checking for a weapon it all happened as pro-democracy protesters trying to close down streets and train lines at a press conference the police and the shooting was in self defense and in the interest of public safety. the officer believed it was very likely that the revolver would be snatch and the consequence would be the sausages death and casualties would have resulted in the whole incident the officer fired 3 shots including one that hit that man. the police say they are investigating hospital
3:03 pm
officials say the wounded man is in critical condition the shooting has inflamed many protesters are going on the stern warning do you have to shoot the video. surfaced or did he have time to sit here for or just sit at the drive in another incident a man was set on fire allegedly after getting into a dispute with protesters he's also in critical condition in a hospital. hong kong's governor carrie lamb says that the government will not back down against violent protesters. if there is do any. wishful thinking that by escalating violence the home call as our government will yield to pressure . to satisfy the so-called politico demands. i'm making this statement aloud here that will not happen. elsewhere police fired tear gas and deployed
3:04 pm
a water cannon in various parts of the city they also charged on to university campuses where students were protesting. let's go right to our correspondent munty has been a standing by in hong kong hi mathias and there's violence as we heard there on the streets tell us more about how things have been escalating in hong kong today. well it started this morning with these shots fired on the protester the protester is in the i.c.u. at the moment that has all of course brought a lot of people to the street it's a strike that many people were called to come out today and it happened when protesters tried to block or wrote in this policeman who was a traffic police not a riot police then got into a scuffle with them he was talking tackling one protester and another one approached and then he shot at him later there were other incidents where protesters have become very violent against people who disagreed with them on woud
3:05 pm
some kind of verbal standoff with them one very dramatic incident food which was shared on the internet of a protest josey a man in a liquid and then setting him a place that man is also in critical condition in the hospital these 2 events of course are very likely to end. late violence for those so far we have seen clashes in many parts of hong kong including here this is one off the hotspots of the protests we have seen many many many clashes in this area we have just seen protesters setting up barricades they stopped buses. then later police came in with a water cannon and sprayed at the protesters now we can see the police is has cleared the street and they're running back because what happens then is that people calm down the protesters come back and also people come known from their
3:06 pm
apartments and then they get into a scuffles with the police again so a lot moving on the ground there mathias that one of the incidents you referred to there this video that's been circulated of protesters lighting a man on fire who disagreed with then i spoke to activists joshua long about that incident earlier let's listen to what he said he will in hong kong are fighting for democracy if gas there we do being for right which means that bad guy might be arrested prosecuted and lobby in prison before riot police brutally. so descend into. indiscriminately to attack general public they would never be arrest prosecute or pay any price. well it is what do you make of that same man from joshua. well we will have to see whether they can find a protester who did this and they will verify it and if they find him he will
3:07 pm
of course go to prison for the police this is one of. one of the criticism of the protesters and one of the demands that the police will have overstepped many boundaries also during these protests are not properly investigated they have been demanding an investigation an independent investigation into the violence is one of their core demands and it has not been met by the government so far and as we are hearing today the government has no intention to give in to one another team on our correspondent reporting there in hong kong thank you. and we do have an extended interview with joshua wong coming up on news right after the show let's get around to some other stories making news around the world iraqi security forces have killed at least 3 protesters in the southern city of nasiriyah dozens more were injured
3:08 pm
a new clashes between anti-government protesters and police around the country including in the capital baghdad amnesty international says iraq's crackdown on the protests has become a bloodbath. iran's president hassan rouhani says his country has discovered a new oil field in the south but high hopes for the fields potential have already been tempered officials now say it contains 22000000000 barrels of crude oil less than half of original estimates the west african nation of gambia has filed a case that the united nation's highest court against me and maher accusing it of genocide against its for hanging a muslim minority gambia was acting on behalf of the organization of islamic cooperation more than 700000 have fled to bangladesh in the last 2 years to escape violence in me and mark. turkey has started sending islamic state fighters who were captured in syria back to their home countries the fighters have been held to deportation centers in turkey and according to the country's interior ministry the
3:09 pm
1st to be repatriated is a u.s. citizen a german combatant will be sent back today as well with more to be repatriated later this week let's get more on this story with our correspondent dorian jones he's standing by for us in istanbul hi dorian what more can you tell us about what the turkish government is doing here. well that's right the interior ministry spokesman that is close been speaking saying that one american citizen has already been to portie today there will be another german and a danish citizen are expected to be returned later on today back to their countries and on thursday it will be 7 more german citizens to the islamic state will be returned and possibly 11 french citizens also 2 other germans are expected later this week as well so this is part of turkey's commitment to return back foreign fighters to their homeland now this does pose a particular diplomatic tension or be given the fact that some of these fighters
3:10 pm
are believed to have had their citizenship or announced by their countries that they are from the turkish interior minister sort of and so louis been very clear he said he sees it as nothing more than diplomatic ploy he says turkey will not be a hotel for these islamic terrorists and it's up to european countries to take their responsibility so there is potentially a looming diplomatic tension that could be low a route that could be brewing over this but clear these these islamic state fighters have to go back home what about the timing of this story is happening now . well this is all in that turkey has had believed to be thousands possibly a few 100 foreign fighters linked to islamic state in the jails but also turkey is now be involved in this military operation into syria it has taken control of a strip around 120 kilometers 30 kilometers deep and now in that area there are prisons of islamic state fighters on which some are believed to be foreign nationals in turkey possibly in talks with washington and countries in the region
3:11 pm
could be taking control of all of our prisons held of islamic state fighters are believed to be hundreds if not thousands of for islamic state fighters in those camps along korea's clear all those countries where they are from have to take them back whether they have a citizenship or not uncursed clear that it's not a hotel and doesn't expect syria to be a hotel for these fighters our correspondent or engine speaking to us from istanbul thank you all many i.a.s. fighters and their families have been held in detention camps run by syrian kurdish forces kurdish authorities and the u.s. have called for countries including germany to take back their citizens who are currently detained in these camps these detainees themselves are also often returned to their home countries germany has so far refused to accept them due to security concerns. and we can speak now to our political correspondent on this story hi max the german government has been skeptical of taking back i.a.s.
3:12 pm
fighters from syria as the government are changed its mind. well the german government has certainly been surprised by the announcement today by turkey a spokesperson of the foreign ministry of germany has said just now in a press conference that they were only informed this morning about the planned repatriation of several german nationals so they have confirmed that germany has confirmed that the planned or petry ations all of german nationals and the nationality of these people have been confirmed and therefore the germany is taking these people back to germany as it is the right of their citizens however they have been able to say if there have been any links for these individuals to the terror organization the so-called islamic state for what we know is that one german national is to be coming back to germany today another 7 are to be scheduled for
3:13 pm
thursday the 14th and then potentially another 2 are supposed to coming back on friday the 15th of november and yes so far the german government said they can't confirm the nationality but they cannot say if there's any links to the islamic state but that among those people that there's both men women and potentially children do we know what will happen to these people when they get to germany. well that is the big debate that germany has been talking about a loss in the last couple of months because there's 2 procedures that have to be taken a bit separately or looked at a bit separately so one is of course proving the nationality and that can be done with the help of embassies and representations of germany abroad for example in turkey and that has happened as the foreign ministry says in the case of those returning this week that they are confirmed as german nationals and the 2nd step is of course the security assessment and the domestic the interior ministry in germany
3:14 pm
has been saying that so far they cannot. confirm any risk assessment and so that these people have to be taken in but then of course that then the german authorities the interior domestic services have to look at if these people pose a threat a security threat because they might have potential links to terror organizations correspondent max millionaire kosik for us there thank you you're watching news still to come this shot resulted in one of the really red cards month i will close the transfer in the books like i will bring you all the controversy. but 1st former bolivian president evo morales has lashed out at his country's opposition accusing it of staging a coup he resigned on sunday after claiming he'd won a 4th term in office in last month's vote but his victory was overshadowed by
3:15 pm
claims of electoral fraud which triggered weeks of protests since his resignation there's been rioting in the capital la paz but there have also been scenes of jubilation. this is how people in the city love podge celebrated the news of change at the top. with fireworks and flags. after almost 14 years in power and battling growing opposition president evo morales took to national television. is the. who is the man to if i am resigning precisely to put an end to the threats and persecution faced by my brothers and sisters in the socialist movement as they use them in his novels the announcement by moralist followed a to mulch was 24 hours that saw support for him falling away fast 1st bolivia's police abandoning their posts and joining the protests. and then
3:16 pm
a call from the chief of the military for him to go quote for the good of the country. the turning point was apparently when the organization of american states reported irregularities in just about every aspect it had examined and recommended new elections. it wasn't just more alice who stepped down but also members of his executive. when he 1st came into office the former cocoa farmer and the continent's 1st indigenous president had promised to make bolivia a fairer country he tackled inflation established more opportunities for the country's huge indigenous population and also reduced poverty by almost half. but he was also seen to abuse his power. that's on the look and he ran for reelection after refusing to abide by the results of a referendum that opposed a forced term. now anger has been replaced by optimism. we're free we finally been able to get rid of the stick to it or i belief we are
3:17 pm
free now we can say that the people are more united than ever. there really is a god and after doing so much harm to the country ever morales has left it we have to believe in a new believe. how that new bolivia might look is unclear normally other top ruling politicians would step in until a new president is elected but they too have left office for now though it's a power vacuum that doesn't seem to worry most bolivians. spain's political deadlock looks set to continue and sunday's general election prime minister pedro sanchez the socialists took the largest share of the vote but failed to secure a majority in parliament the far right box party with its vehement stance against catalonian independence made the biggest gains it doubled its seats in parliament to become the 3rd largest party this was spain's 4th election in as many years. and
3:18 pm
we can speak to our correspondent bases she's covering the story for us from madrid hi barbara good to see you these elections don't appear to have changed very much so where does spain go from here. where does spain go this is the 1000000000 euro question for pedro such as the navy he said look to motivational speakers if you fail try again try harder and that is. probably what he is going to do because the spokesman in the meantime that a proposal to form a government somehow support of some of the other smaller parties in parliament will be forthcoming soon so he will try again to sort of cobble together a coalition on the left and sort of part of the center and nationalist parties that he has not managed to do in the past there is of course as we know not the way out she could look to the biggest opposition party the conservative p.p. and ask them to step up but that seems to be a hurdle because it would be
3:19 pm
a 1st in spanish politics that seems to be a hurdle that he's not ready to jump yet barbara mentioned that spain has already had 2 general elections this year and a european election what are people there who have you spoken to make of all of this and what are they expecting from their politicians now. people are completely and totally fed up was this that it's a spectacle they really don't want to have to watch anymore because it was even clear before this voting day this sunday that there was skepticism that that the votes of the election would bring a resolution because the polls showed it wouldn't and so it happened indeed it's become even more difficult to form election den before this ill fated voting run on sunday so we talked to some people this morning what they make of it let's listen in to what they had to say. this is interesting i find it very
3:20 pm
disappointing that we have to go through these elections because the prime minister was not able to form a government which. has said now there is still no government and no see even if budgets. so what about if you don't think you know it's even more complicated than before the one with the fall of the parliament is more fragmented i don't know the more you have either don't get there i really hope they can form a government and agree on that difficult i mean that's what they're paid for but i think. it's been a waste of money for just getting the same results. because it's a disaster i'm really fed up with bullets and i'm ashamed for this country. that went. on. so there really seems to be a clear message there shape up or get out. barber you know one of the big winners in the vote on sunday was the far right vox party they surged to become the 3rd
3:21 pm
largest party in spain how have they managed to garner so much support. it is a real mix of reasons and motives of course and the biggest among them is probably the company line crisis because it stirred up feelings of nationalism that had been dormant in spain for a for decades nobody really thought about it but the right managed to really sort of pour oil on these fires and sort of gaps emotions flowing and now you really hear people here talking about the pride of spain and the unity of spain and issues that really had been sort of not top of the agenda for quite a while then also of course you have a certain amount of protest voters in there who were fed up with the other parties and said that's just try something else there is this the usual sort of railing against the the perceived idea that political correctness is too strong in this country and you have something that might be particularly spanish which is
3:22 pm
a sort of rollback on women's rights because the spending has spain has seen a rather record modernization during the last years and so min seem to be standing up now and said this is all going much too far we don't want this and we want to sort of push this spec so it really makes the act of motives with this vox party really wants to go politically what they really want to achieve what their real goals are that is relatively i'm clear so this is mostly about protest and it's mostly about national feelings. about to have a cell reporting there in madrid thank you. now big bird the cookie monster and the rest of the sesame street cast have been celebrating the 50th anniversary of the show was launched the characters became international stars with sesame street's revolutionary approach to children's television when it was 1st broadcast in 1989 today the award winning show was broadcast in 150 countries including dozens of
