ambulances bear away the victims. the school north of los angeles has seen the us his latest mass shooting. somebody just freaked. out the door they wanted to rush to the door. just lock it all the chairs are going in the door close is really scary having everybody . call their parents saying. this. is scary. in the immediate aftermath of the shooting police place the school and others nearby on lockdown relatives of the students swarm to the area. desperate they remained glued to their phones trying to reach their loved ones. to wait. for many.

police have described the suspect as a 16 year old a student at the school who carried out the attack on his birthday. detectives have reviewed the video at the scene which clearly show the so subject in the quad withdraw a handgun from his backpack shoot 5 people and then shoot himself in the head. police are investigating the crime scene including the suspect's house for clues they're trying to figure out his motive and so the question of why he turned on his fellow students. joining me now from los angeles is jason capital and yet he's the l.a. bureau chief with n.b.c. news radio jason 1st of all just tell us about the victims of this latest california school shooting i understand they were teenagers. that's right and they range in age between 16 and 14 years old some very young people here

in southern california were affected today the high school rows about 2500 school students a day so as the shooting was happening school was just getting underway the survivors were taken off campus and they were questioned and then released to their parents this student the students that were shot are still in the home cerny dinner and they're surviving but still in the hospital we're supposed to get a live date from medical officials in that hospital here shortly but there are reports that we've now have 3 dead and the gunman is still in grave condition after using a 45 caliber pistol on his head. now let's talk about the suspect so we heard in the piece that he's 16 years old what more do we know about him and what more do we know about his motive. well right now motive is still unclear but it there's a couple of reports that are getting

a lot of play one and today is his birthday and 2 that there are some social media posts where he might have made reference to today's events before they took place and on top of that there might be a relationship that might have gone sour which might have triggered bad we're also learning that the gunman's father recently passed away so that might have sparked some anger as far as officials are saying or they're not saying anything except that they're doing a social media deep dive they're looking at everything from computers to from thumb drives to c.d.'s or d.v.d.'s that they found on his computer as does anything that they can get their hands on they're going to look at that digital footprint. and jason this shooting is one of at least 30 u.s. schools this year the result of their injuries or in death of course we know gun control is a divisive issue but is there any kind of plan in the works to make schools at least to make schools safer for students. well of course and you know there's
