popular player at the top and the greens eventually step into uncle americal shoes . i'm carl kasell and welcome to the program a fiery anniversary today in france as yellow vests protesters mark one year of their grassroots movement there were demonstrations today across france including in paris where violence flared police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse the crowds now the movement has waned recently with far fewer people turning up for the weekly marches but still one year on activists insist they won't give up. their numbers have dropped since they peach last year but france's yellow vest protesters are still determined to take a stand against inequality and high living costs the movement's 1st anniversaries.

for the now familiar confrontation with riot police on the streets of paris. i couldn't even breathe there was some much tear gas if the guy from mcdonald's hadn't opened the door for me i'd be on my way to hospital these imbeciles keep firing tear gas at as guys it. yellow vests want to make it clear to president emanuel micron that they haven't gone away a new poll shows more than half the french population support them. we're still in exactly the same place but we weren't give up we will fight for our purchasing power for them to stop imposing taxes on us the little ones because we're fed up of dying in silence. what are the street has been coming here every saturday from the beginning and as you can see we're good to go on for a 2nd yeah because there's nothing nothing nothing yeah yeah yeah yeah. despite these latest disturbances the movement has lost momentum that's partly because mark cross softened his stance and offered billions in state aid and tax cuts he also

scrapped plans for a massively unpopular increase in fuel tax but more on rest is likely before the year is out unions of called mass strikes early next month to protest against proposed pension reforms. are let's get more now from correspondent lisa lewis trees in paris for us following this story lisa we saw as some of those violent images of the demonstrations so far today i mean 1st just give us a sense what's the situation like right now i mean how big are these protests and who is out in the streets today. well there are dozens of protests in places across france also him paris approaches were clashing have been clashing with police probably thousands of people here in paris and tens of thousands across france as you said that's not really that much compared to how many people turned out at the very beginning of this movement a movement about a year ago now who are they it's very difficult to say but when you look at the
7:04 pm
pictures it looks like it's a mix of different people black books and a kiss but also moderates yellow versus specially in the country so here to underline that they're still there that there's still this unhappiness with how france has been governed at this very moment that they still have with the government. now over the past year the yellow vests they've claimed victory is a present across the reforms he was forced to repeal the fuel tax which triggered the movement in the 1st place how has this movement to reshape france now in one year. well it has reshaped the country in that it's very clear that many people are quite unhappy with you know that reform program that the government is having and couldn't tin ying therefore obviously retracted on certain measures just as you said they've drawn that very controversial fuel tax at the
7:05 pm
government also for example increased the minimum wage to pay these protesters anger but the underlying reforms are continuing so when you look to look at $1.00 recent poll for example more than 50 percent of the french are still in favor the day they still understand the anger and the frustration of this movement whereas at that same poll there is also saying that more than 60 percent of the french want the protests to stop so it's very clear that this country is still continuing its in its reform movement but there are many people here are very unhappy about it and very unhappy about you know the bigger picture basically that it's a capitalistic country in that they're not enough social measures being put in place the numbers. but now we're hearing that some protesters plan to run for local office next year what comes next for this movement will become more political.
7:06 pm
well it's very difficult to see how this movement can be represented on a political level if you look back at the european elections early this year there were at least 2 lists of yellow vests protesters but none of them actually managed to capture enough enough votes to send someone to brussels as a lawmaker says very unlikely that the local elections early next year will show a different result this is really a movement on the ground it's not a movement that wants to be represented in parliament or i did abuse lisa lewis in paris for us thanks very much. are now a check of some of the other stories making news around the world thousands of protesters have gathered in the czech capital prague to call on prime minister andre bobbish to step down opposition groups say the billionaire prime minister profits from his political office the rally coincided with the 30th anniversary of the velvet revolution that ended communist rule. at least one person has been killed during protests in iran the unrest erupted after

a surprise decision by the government to raise fuel prices by 50 percent and introduced rationing protestors blocked traffic in tehran while in other parts of the country police fired tear gas at demonstrations. germany's greens have been riding a recent wave of support polling as high as 26 percent this summer that's due in part to the party's popular pair of leaders a duo who to no one's surprise has now been reelected. flowers for the winner the greens reelected and the in a better book as co-leader with 97 point one percent of the vote here in that thank you i accept the result i'm speechless and close to tears thank you no leader of the greens has ever been elected by such a margin before in her acceptance speech babcock stressed to call it receiving a carbon neutral economy and society. the most we have to assure that the

ecological transformation is the social ecological transformation that works for all people for all people in this society 30 delegates also reelected all that topic their books partner in leadership he told delegates he wants to open the greens to wider electorate. do for me we can't allow ourselves to be rigid we have to listen to legitimate criticism and always be ready to talk to everybody with a couple of big questions remain unanswered should to greens propose a candidate for chancellor in the next election and who should that be but it was clear that the party feels ready to govern as. it should be exposed are you we are growing into a new role and that is not just to participate in government but to provide leadership. so done out. by reelecting babycham topic germany's screens have demonstrated confidence that they have to leaders to meet

the challenge. correspondent kate brady caught up with babcock after her religion. thank you for joining us today the greens are still flying high in the polls here in germany in 2nd position what do you plan to do to make sure that the party can keep that momentum going ahead of the 2021 election to keep on going what we have tried in the last 2 years that we didn't look at what are the others doing the social democrats or the conservatives and just. reacting to their proposal about bringing our own proposal with regard to fair housing in cities which is a big problem in germany with regard to the economy and the question how do we get our economy carbon free and the question especially of rural areas we have tried to put in the middle of our politics and who are white say not everyone in the last elections but to try to keep on following this track we heard from your colleague as well yesterday robot back speaking about the and of the medical error that's
7:10 pm
upon us how do you see the green party shaping the future of germany in the future of germany's role in terms of on the international stage but also specifically in the european union. we need definitely more european engagement where so many proposals on the floor with regard to the european union is specially investing into the future of the european union and germany has been very reluctant over the last year and this is a big problem and that's why we for example propose that they have to be a big fun course in the european union investment of infrastructure but also making the banking system secure against the next crisis. and to engage also in the question of agriculture. policy where most of the money goes into it. and looking ahead now it's the 1000000 euro question right now do you see yourself
