predicted to lead to catastrophic environmental effects now here is where we need to be in order to keep the global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees celsius that's the most optimistic goal agreed to in paris to get there and it looks steep emissions need to be slashed by 55 percent overall in the next decade in other words it cut more than 7 percent per year the problem is we're not anywhere near that goal in fact last year global carbon dioxide emissions rose by nearly 2 percent and the longer we wait the deeper and faster those emissions cuts will need to be and joining me is the lead author of that gap reports. john christiansen he is speaking to us from copenhagen tonight now 1st of all thank you for taking the time to speak with us this is in fact the 10th year in a row that the u.n. has released an emissions gap report just walk us through one of the key takeaways this year is there anything new in that report. thank you for that in addition to

or not doing to tackle their c o 2 emissions. one minute i think they are doing something and it is not that this thing happening i mean you see chinese building ruble power really really big scale but at the same time they're having quite high growth rates of their farming that keep relying mediocre at the same time so it's just it's not a black and white victim that said there is a lot of british ships in between i think what has happened in the last just 5 years or so is that wind and solar has really moved up and become fairly competitive in almost all countries and i think that will in itself true market forces also drive things faster but it needs to be with a policy that makes that possible and i think a lot of countries haven't realized that they need to put in place that sort of conducive political environment today that transition and we are talking about a real transitional specially of energy and transport we need to move towards the televising power completely but actually have to shift the end really bring it down very quickly and i think in the same time transport lost it's
