we still forward. this is your business report i'm stephen bears in berlin thanks for watching. is ethiopia's reputation changing before its very eyes a country once known in the west for conflict and hunger is now home to this year's nobel peace prize given to its prime minister. is also in the middle of a series of economic reforms which the government hopes can attract some much needed international investment. making jeans here is nonstop conveyor belt work sewing machines and workers packed tightly across the factory floor not in asia as you would expect this is ethiopia one of the world's poorest countries the government has opened 7 industrial parks like this one to foreign investors 5 more a planned it's an attempt to follow in the footsteps of asian tigers like south korea taiwan and china which began their economic miracles with textiles. president

a boost in 2017 ethiopia exported goods worth some 172000000 euros to germany mostly consisting of coffee and textiles in the same period germany sent 328000000 euros of goods the other way mostly vehicles and machinery much of that is needed to build hydroelectric power plants ethiopia wants to become africa's prime energy producer and joint economic power to south africa and nigeria there right now one in 4 ethiopians still. lives below the poverty line. that's macon religious conflicts are also constantly flaring up the hope is that economic success can unite and pacify the country. correspondent maria gale nicholas school who joins me now by phone in addis ababa maria 350000000 euros in credit and pledges to what extent is this about real investment opportunity in a reforming country and what it said about hindering migration.
7:20 pm
hello well yes i think the investment opportunities are real and you q.p.r. in the sense that many sectors are still in need of foreign direct investment such as agriculture like manufacturing a huge interest and actually during the visit of the german delegation here it was also stressed that germany is planning to invest in a sustainable way in ethiopia not only creating jobs but also ensuring a sustainable supply chain kind of comforting exploitative labor etc of course one of the arguments is that if countries like it you know got improved their economy there will be less of a migration flow towards europe and that includes germany but i think economic opportunities and if you have to go beyond this and in any case you will have to see when it came time comes if the companies actually manage to implement the principles never in your opinion what is ethiopia need most right now to develop its economy. well 1st of all one of the biggest challenges to the country's
7:21 pm
development and foreign investment is logistics if you can still really liking behind in all aspects of the logistical supply chain so focusing on improving transportation agro processing and the like is crucial to continue to attract investors and increasingly export capacity also unemployment is growing considerably so dark creation for anybody young population is essential and germany also says it wants to support in that sense another major challenge of course is the political situation although at the internationally crazed requirement the country the internal problems such as interact with tensions are still very much present and if one of these tensions well it was sort of delayed considerably and this could of course this way to investors and existing to something about the economy as a whole and now briefly maria if you can we know that china and russia are also both already active in ethiopia is their focus the same as germany's
7:22 pm
so although time has a very well established heritage there many sectors like i mentioned before that are still need of investment because of the new investment laws that are actually very recent and yes china and germany might overlap in terms of the sectors that invest in some time such as renewable energy is but time has not everywhere and folks that can for instance announce that they want to establish themselves ironik as well so i think german it can distinguish itself well in terms of investment alright we'll leave it there due to be correspondent maria get the glasgow in addis ababa thank you very much for joining us for decades the u.s. german business relationship has look watertight but could that be changing a new survey from financial firm k p m g's that just u.s. companies are more uncertain about investing heavily in germany take a look. a safe haven for u.s. investment not anymore apparently. germany has always been one of the forced ports
7:23 pm
of call for u.s. dollars but this new survey from k p m g suggests things are changing. less than a quarter of u.s. companies plan to invest at least 10000000 euros in germany over the next 3 years that's down from a figure of 47 percent just 2 years ago the u.s. business sector in germany says this news does not come as a surprise. in the signals have been out there for a few years by the way american companies have been talking about the problems with digital infrastructure energy costs bureaucracy and interesting only one of the positives they always mentioned was political stability and now we can't even really talk about that anymore so there certainly is work that needs to be done and there's too much at stake to not take these kind of surveys seriously. it's not all bad news for out of 5 u.s. companies remain positive about their current economic situation in germany but the

hurdles to investment from poor digital infrastructure to an overly complicated tax system will continue to raise questions for an economy already teetering on the brink of recession. back to africa now where south african airways has been holding quote intense discussions to try and secure funds for the carrier's operational and structural turnaround the carrier hasn't turned a profit since 2011 and it's been dependent on government bailouts to remain solvent last month the crippling strike took it to the brink of collapse the public enterprises ministry says the state owned airline cannot continue in its present form and that it will need a quote unquote radical restructuring to be sustainable get details of any such funding have yet to emerge. right here's a business story that shows how random acts of kindness can go a long way it's about an australian farmer who is gifted a bag of seeds thinking little of it she scatter them across her land and the early

profitable when you're caught in the spring time they felt fresh bunches directly to florists later in the year they harvest the seeds which airport by nurseries and retailers around the country for a range $200.00 a straight in dollars a kilogram. with prices like that it's no wonder that business is flourishing. well today is cyber monday and expectations are high for yet another record breaking 24 hours of online sales at least in the u.s. but with a day lose of digital deals now spreading to all 4 corners of the globe there are more warnings about the excesses of consumerism even the pope has pitched. pope francis' story in advent in vatican city in jubilant fashion this year the start of the christian countdown to christmas happened to coincide with the now traditional festive shopping frenzy of black friday weekend and this time both came with a papal plea for restraint. brothers and sisters
7:27 pm
consumerism is a virus that affects the faith at its root because it makes you believe that life depends only on what you have. his holiness has doubtless noticed the speedy spreads of the excesses of black friday across the globe these pictures are from to have been in south africa. even cash strapped venezuela is in on the act showing that spending power hasn't completely deserted the country even of its own currency all but has many shoppers have been using u.s. dollars. everybody if they. think there are a lot of people i mean a loss of people buying. and yet you haven't seen so many in a very long time. given the economic situation we're in this is the best opportunity we have to be. back in the home of black friday shopping

malls in the u.s. may actually have been a little quieter over the weekend than in previous years for the 1st time a majority of americans saying they would rather shop online. and that's why cyber monday is likely to be another record breaker with predicted internet sales of $9400000000.00 news that will please the retailers but probably not the pope. that's it from me and a v.w. business team you can find ever find out about more of these more on these and other stories at the dot com slash business i'm stephen bears in berlin thanks for watching.
