this is d.w. news live from berlin u.k. conservatives are poised for a massive majority in parliament the 1st exit poll after thursday's general election signals the tories could have an 86 seat advantage of course fantastic news there for prime minister boris johnson and his pledge to go to get bread done but it's a crushing defeat for the labor party and jeremy corbett will have full analysis also coming up europe tells the u.s. to mind its own business over a controversial pipeline that will carry russian gas to germany the u.s.
2:01 am
is threatening sanctions against companies building the pipeline. i'm calling aspen welcome to the program we start with special coverage of the u.k. general election and what is shaping up to be a landslide victory for the conservatives and exit polls suggesting a massive win for prime minister boris johnson's party one that would give him the majority that he needs to ratify his bret's a deal and take the u.k. out of the european union the poll released by british media shows a clear majority for the conservatives winning $368.00 out of $650.00 seats if that holds it would ensure that johnson remains as prime minister and it would also be a historic loss for jeremy corbin's labor party dropping below 200 seats for the 1st time since the 1930 s.
2:02 am
so counting will be going on throughout the night. here's now a look at exactly how those projections are breaking down by party remember the magic number for majority is 326 and you can see the conservatives there with 368 seats projected that's a 50 seat gain over the last election just $191.00 seats for labor $55.00 for the s. and p. 13 for the lib dems and one seat for the greens and then we have the other category $22.00 seats there including 3 for the plight of comedy that's a welsh nationalist party. where we have team coverage of the u.k. elections night joining me in studio to help break this all down is our u.k. politics analyst rob standing by in london is correspondent barbara vai's will barbara let's start with you before the election experts were predicting something around a slim majority for the conservatives this is much more than
2:03 am
a slim majority this is looking a lot like a landslide how surprising are these projected results. these project results are absolutely stunning because nobody really expected them and it seems that if you if now is the count is coming in and we can see how slowly it is moving forward that the conservative party actually manages to do what their main goal was to break down the red wall in the north and the northeast that is all those old traditional labor seats that have been in the hands of the labor party for decades are suddenly changing and turning blue the problem of the for the server to bridge and just think about something momentous that seems to be just about to happen right now that's the form of this the feat to form a seat of tony blair labor prime minister most the most successful labor prime minister
2:04 am
in living history that it seems to be forming to the top for the 1st time in about 100 years now that is absolutely momentous and it shows you just as a symbol for what's going on there that the old traditional party ties the tribal feeling and the working class districts off the north and the north east the poor areas of britain there where just simply labor born into labor and died was labor that they have really broken down and new era is really beginning in british politics with. rob here in studio with me now we heard that what's going on in london the shark i mean hearing about the red ball breaking down we actually already have the early editions of the news newspapers coming out but just take a look at some of the headlines that we're seeing now in in britain already this evening a victory for boris and for bracks it nightmare before christmas we see there on
2:05 am
the daily mirror the daily mail saying rejoice as boris's for a thumping win and a sky. newspaper here scotland is a different country referring to a big successful day potentially for the for the s. and p. . seeing those newspaper headlines i mean very different reactions of course i think we expected to see the media have the field day. it is the u.k. oh it is a notorious for those kind of headlines and. one of those headlines rejoice i think. obviously if you look at the message that was going to get out get bricks it done yes you know those people can be joyous but i think at some point you need to look beyond that and to see where the country is headed is how divided it's it already is and how much more polarized becomes whether the choice of the word with joy is the right one were you surprised i mean what we were seeing
2:06 am
such a sweeping potentially sweeping victory into areas of the u.k. that you know that would never been possible even a few years ago i think as it was we are seeing a realignment of political lines that is no longer a case of those clear lines that we have seen traditionally in the past i mean if we hear that tony blair's seat is looking to good story is quite stunning a momentous i think this the ripple effect the the earthquake that will be felt throughout british politics will be with us for some time to come barbara i want to come back to you now and of course this is a parliamentary election but it's also really being seen as a proxy vote on bret's and right i mean what do these projected outcomes say about the way that voters in the u.k. were feeling about. it seems that the
2:07 am
message. that was a little simple and that he repeated it like the in time as. that felt like that during the election campaign get bricks it done that it really resonated it was people and the astonishing thing is robert just pointed out is what happens after people in the north in the northeast i mean these are the most private parts of britain they are also the most deprived among the most deprived parts in northern europe it is quite incredible the poverty that you can see there people really on minimum wages and and really really rather scarce is social social handouts and the point is that this is going to hurt them and it is going to hurt them badly but it obviously seemed to be so supportive and so important for these people so symbolic for something else or some sort of freedom for the some sort of you know
2:08 am
showing the finger to the establishment whatever hard to distinguish that they sort of totally disregarded their own interests and voted tory because if you look at the seats where hundreds for instance last honda factory is just picking up i mean it's like marcus there seem to say no we don't want your jobs and very similar and sunderland when the sun is still located it's the same thing you know those people just saying we don't want those jobs anymore and what comes after it is going to be a very difficult time once people wake up from one they've done tonight to rob one of them back to you because you know as much of a big victory as this will likely be for the conservatives this is a historic loss for labor as well i mean where did labor go wrong well in 2 words jeremy colby he's proved to be such a divisive figure most hated seaguy. boris johnson wasn't so well liked either though right you know but again i think it comes down to just is can this
2:09 am
personality trait that boris johnson has managed to play that populist card so much better and jeremy cord isn't. quite clearly and it didn't help that he sat on the fence for so long is ambiguous stance didn't help but i think as bob was saying this the main takeaway is that despite there in the labor manifesto which he pushed wanted to push through with massive boosts wealth education in chance that even that didn't resonate in the traditionally hard labor areas where there is massive poverty and homelessness. that is just quite incredible development to see that course we're still waiting on the full results tonight but it does look like a big loss for the labor party and a big win for the conservatives rob much in studio with us. in london thanks very much. well in other news germany has hit back at u.s.

the argument that the united states saying we are making ourselves more dependent or maybe even completely dependent by russian oil and gas deliveries russia's gas pramono the majority stake in the 1200 kilometer long pipeline which will transport natural gas under the baltic sea from russia directly to germany circumventing ukraine and other eastern european countries the project is more than 90 percent complete and is scheduled to start operating in mid 2020 north stream 2 has the potential to double the amount of natural gas germany imports from russia the country needs more gas to ensure energy supplies remain stable as it phases out the use of coal and nuclear power. and as germany goes green policy makers here suspect washington is also worried about the business saying goal of north stream to. you was obdurate the us produces liquid for charlie and gas using the fracking

method the carbon footprint is worse than coal and they have trouble selling it here on the european market because they aren't competitive that develops fish and whatever the u.s. motives president trump says he will sign the bill into law and implemented as soon as possible. while russia and germany are working together on the nord stream to project but the 2 countries are also mired in an escalating diplomatic round of the murder of a georgian citizen in berlin. the german ambassador was summoned to the foreign ministry in moscow on thursday morning to be told that russia was expelling 2 german diplomats they have 7 days to leave the country the kremlin sit out the reasons why. the diplomats are being expelled as a force to retaliate 3 measure this measure is unavoidable to have our diplomats were expelled we consider that decision by berlin absolutely baseless we disagree

with it so this is the inevitable response. the spat is over the killing in august of the kind of congo shrilly georgian who fought for the separatists in the chechen war he was shot in the head twice at close range in a berlin park the suspect a russian citizen was soon arrested german prosecutors suspect russia could be implicated in the killing but say moscow has refused to cooperate in the investigation that's why germany last week expelled 2 russian diplomats the russian government denies any involvement lawmakers in berlin have condemned russia's expulsion of 2 german diplomats to get inside of russia's decision comes as no surprise to anybody. about it conveys however the wrong message. and in terms of the matter at hand it's entirely unjustified to see it's russia's

response shows it has a guilty conscience and we expect russia to help clear up the murder was modest that investigation is still underway in the meantime tensions between germany and russia show no signs of easing. it was even police say they have recovered the bodies of 6 people who died during the volcanic eruption on the. island off the country's northeastern coast 2 other people are missing and are presumed dead this was a risky recovery mission scientists had warned that gases on the island after monday's eruption are so toxic that taking a single breath could be fatal. i here's a reminder now the top story that we're tracking for you at this hour an exit poll is pointing to a big lead for british prime minister boris johnson and his conservatives in thursday's general of light. the party is on track for an 86 seat majority in parliament the labor party meanwhile led by german corgan is projected to lose 71 seats the results could allow johnson to secure britain's departure from the e.u.
