this is news live from berlin and of course johnson and his conservatives went to resoundingly jordi in the u.k. election there with new sound they are this majority we will at last be able to do . that. johnson's been to buckingham palace to officially seek the permission of the queen to form a government his 1st task will be the push for exit through parliament will have full analysis of what it all means for the u.k. and europe. meanwhile european union leaders are processing the conservative

victory and planning their own way forward a summit in brussels stands behind plans for a green deal which pledges to make the e.u. carbon neutral in the coming decades and we get a firsthand account of life in china's internment camps for its weaker minority inmates are punished for speaking their own language and they are subject to abuse and daily humiliation. i'm sumi so much it is good to have you with us britain's conservatives have won an overall majority in the country's general election decisively ending 3 and a half years of political gridlock prime minister boris johnson says his government has been given a powerful new mandate to finally take the u.k. out of the european union for the opposition labor party it's an historic defeat after a new why. out in its traditional heartlands let's take
1:02 pm
a look now at the results the figures that we have the conservatives as you see are have a huge majority far exceeding the 326 seats that they needed to become the biggest party and there are those huge losses for labor the main opposition party the scottish nationalist party saw considerable gains while the election results defied expectations for the main parties while the conservatives did far better than expected the opposition labor party and the liberal democrats saw their hopes dashed labour's leader is now on his way out and a live demo leader has already gone failing even to win her own seat for the man who called it this election was an all or nothing gamble do or die in the end narratives gave way to relief as he and his conservatives looked on course for a historic night. the unlikeliest rock star welcome to the far story of the result.
1:03 pm
this bet paid off. with this mandate and this majority we will at last be able to do what. the pay attention to is this this election means that getting brits done is not the irrefutable irresistible although arguable decision. of the british people this ecan story is that of a labor party in need of a hug after its worst defeat in decades their heartlands did the unthinkable and voted conservative it is now no longer a matter of will leader jeremy corbyn go but when. this is obviously a very disappointing night for the labor party with the result that we've got on also make it clear that i will not lead the party in any future general election

campaign. the start story is of a dish united kingdom the scottish national party racked up a landslide north of the border roy motions got the better of some. but they couldn't distract from renewed calls for a 2nd referendum on scottish independence. but it's johnson has no rate firstly to take scotland of the e.u. and secondly norway to block the scottish people choosing their own future another headache which johnson in northern ireland where for the 1st time parties backing a united ireland outnumbered poor british unionists the final lesson of this eventful night is of voters overwhelmingly rejecting the pool european liberals their leader was ousted ending any effort to keep britain inside the european union . these results will bring dread and dismay
1:05 pm
and people are looking for hope. i still believe that we as a country can be warm and generous inclusive and open. as day broke johnson returned reinforced to downing street choosing to walk the final few yards in a cold and frenetic election campaign boiled down he promised to finish breaks it once and for all whether he can and at what cost to his country is a story still to be told. let's go to our correspondent burgomaster is standing by for us outside number 10 downing street hypercard good to see you you've been talking to voters across the u.k. to lawmakers ahead of the selection what do you think about the scale of this conservative victory. boris johnson really has to live a a massive victory for his party he has reached out to vegas where the conservative
1:06 pm
party was never able to get any foot into the door to the industrial heartland switch were for sometimes 100 years in the hands of the labor party the ex mining communities where the manufacturing communities that vision strongly for breakfast and that just did not want jeremy corbin where they didn't like his breakfast policy the labor party's policy for a 2nd referendum they voted for boris johnson and many of them for the 1st time i've spoken to several people there and they did not have a good word for jeremy coburn and the labor party and many said well this is the 1st time like my my parents my grandparents we've always voted labor but for the 1st time i'm going to vote for the conservatives and this is really both johnson's trial and it really has been an incredibly polarizing alexion bereket where has this left the u.k. . well. almost half of the
1:07 pm
people in the u.k. very to remain in the european union and i think there will be a lot of people that are clearly very sad and they feel deprived that they're being member of the european union being able to travel and work in other e.u. countries that easily that they will take and be taken away from them others are going to rejoice a lot of people don't want to hear anything more about bricks and this sort of easy message by boris johnson they will just say well enough of all that did ring for 3 years so many different reactions we respect in some people in london so let's listen to what they have to say. result for the tories. there when he put them through the procedure which is a good result for england well i just think it's dreadful we're going to leave you now goodness knows what's going to happen now the tory government is totally right
1:08 pm
wing is going to be in power for the next 5 years now people in this country are really suffering homelessness people children going hungry and. leaving the e.u. which i think is just dishonest i think. the politicians have been messing about so long i think they're on the. public wanted and now we've got what the public wants it ok because of the voices of the voters there are meanwhile boris johnson has met the queen to formally ask her to form a government what will be his main priorities in the coming days and weeks. well i think his 1st virtue right now just after he's come back to visit the queen is to get a little bit of sleep he did look quite uncombed i have to say when he went and i would've of done in the street he probably didn't get much sleep during the night but then it's all about brags that he's going to get the parliament together already next week so then he will want to get his withdrawal agreement the deal
1:09 pm
that he has hammered out with the e.u. on what terms to leave the e.u. that's already going to go through parliament next week and that then clears the path for leaving the e.u. at the end of january already however after that he has to renegotiate with the e.u. and it's about the future relationship that it's about what kind of trade deal what kind of security partnership is the u.k. going to have in the future with the european union and that might not be just as easy as it was johnson has promised the voters here during this election campaign what about at home in the u.k. back that we know for sansa now has this mandate this majority will it be smooth sailing implementing what he wants going forward. well visible it's not going to be easy with the e.u. boris johnson as promised it's all going to be done by the end of the year but many experts many of his critics are pointing out that normally these deals are taking
1:10 pm
years to negotiate so it might not be quite as quick as he's hoping for as he has promised however he's also facing really disunited united kingdom here as in scotland the nationalists have had major victory so he's going to face more cools for another referendum in scotland because the scottish people did not wait to leave the european union and they don't want it and they will make his life more difficult then in those banal and also the unionist parties that probe regs that have lost seats say he might face calls for a really nice at all and so the union itself is at stake here and boris johnson will have his hands full to to really deal with this country that's more disunited and more polarized than ever our correspondent reporting for us in london thank you so much. right well what is at stake for germany we can speak to
1:11 pm
a german parliamentarian met in hock there he is the spokes person for breakfast for the social democrats are here in germany and in parliament parliament mr grady thank you so much for joining us you've made no secret of the fact that you didn't want to see the u.k. leave the european union so what do you think of this result that we've seen. well we didn't want the united kingdom to leave but we're not surprised so we had the polls earlier this week and now this happened we truly dislike the result we would've all liked the united king to stay in the european union but now we have to make the best out of it surely some in your party might be looking to germany corbin and the labor party in what they perhaps did wrong there what did you make of their performance. well i didn't expect labor to be to be that behind their own goals but obviously they didn't manage to get any other
1:12 pm
subject on the breaks it into into the campaign but i'm still analyzing the results and especially northern and the northern parts of finland i'm not sure this whether there are other structural problems of the middle left party that addressed the people properly but we will take a closer look to that in the next days is it fair to say the social democrats here in germany know you're not dealing with drags it but could perhaps learn something from this result well i think we have structural problems with the middle east and social democratic parties and other countries as well we are struggling as well and we are thinking of how to address people and their situation lives and to persuade them and the social democrats have the good answers to it that did not work in. the bracks voting districts in this this election let's see whether other subjects will be more important to german voters in future elections mr grady what do you think this resoundingly victory for the conservatives in the u.k.
1:13 pm
means for germany. well what does it mean for i would say what does it mean for you can you but 1st with the united kingdom itself from the outside it looks at the country still very polarized and divided so that's not a good thing to see with any any partner in europe for us economically as you know it will be not a winning story neither for germany nor the united kingdom we are still really taking a close look at the situation on the on the irish island in northern ireland in the republic of ireland that things do not get worse in that instance we're trying to get as close economically culturally politically as possible in the future relationship of course forced johnson has proven to be a tough negotiating partner partner until now and he has said he wants to get brakes it done quickly are you confident about those future negotiations between the european union and the u.k. i'm not sure at this point whether mr johnson will will continue to have this polarizing style of negotiating we have
1:14 pm
a different situation now he's not the future relationship will be will be have to have a consensus between all 27 remaining member states so it's a little bit more difficult than negotiating about bret's it but compares them to negotiating about free trade agreement for example so i think the cards are a little differently dealt at this point and they will be complicated but i think at the end rational will. will be victorious over over ideas that are more nationalistic so i think there will be a good solution to this ok mate in fact fair to the spokesperson for breaks it for the social democrats here in the german parliament thank you very much for joining us. thanks for having me. now world leaders have been reacting to boris johnson's victory u.s. president donald trump said britain and the united states would now be free to strike what he called a massive new trade deal after brags that german chancellor angela merkel said she was looking forward to working with johnson for quote the friendship and strong
1:15 pm
cooperation between our nations and the president of the e.u. council shall michelle had this to say we're going. to. her i hope. very important to do. for you. meanwhile european union leaders have been holding a summit in brussels but breaks it has not been at the top of their list of priorities. first suspense. and then a little disappointment journalists in brussels knew the result of the u.k. election means one thing that brags it most likely will happen. but leaders focused on another topic that might fundamentally transform the e.u. in the years to come it was very interesting to see the leaders and or seeing and

supporting. a complex european green deal we've been debating all the opportunity it brings along that debate took almost 10 hours the result of all member states indorsed the goal of the e.u. becoming climate neutral by 2050 but one country did not commit to actually implementing that goal poll that. we agreed to the principle that poland can achieve climate neutrality at its own pace. the reason for this exemption is that poland is heavily reliant on coal and fears the costs of transition to a greener economy the country holding back on that commitment seems like a serious setback to the deal but the german chancellor did not agree it's been holding i'm quite content and of the circumstances europe is not divided into different parts we have one member state that needs
1:17 pm
a little more time to think about how to implement this but we have a good outlook for success in the off and we can afford it was not the outcome these activists had hoped for though before leaders kicked off their meeting they have tried to create a sense of urgency by bringing fire and smoke to the summit venue it appears the message did make it to everyone inside the building. let's check in now and some other stories making news around the world in algeria a former prime minister. has won the presidential election according to the electoral commission turnout was low after the opposition called for a boycott in some cities protesters try to disrupt voting algeria has been in limbo for months since protests helped oust its longtime president. the u.s. has test fired a missile over the pacific that had long been banned under a treaty between the u.s. and russia the arms treaty was abandoned last summer amid deteriorating relations
