i'm melissa chan welcome to news asia thank you for joining us it's the largest internment of minorities since world war 2 more than 1000000 ethnic media muslims are locked up in prisons across china's northwestern region of shing jiang. beijing has said the camps are voluntarily education centers meant to counter it stream most islamic thought but survivors paint a very different picture they say the places are really prisons in recent years thousands of weaker as have fled into exile many to turkey our correspondent yulia han spoke to one woman now in istanbul about her ordeal. going for walk with her grandson just a year ago going to hard wouldn't have dreamt it was possible. at the time she was

in china in one of the internment camps for a week is for education centers as the leadership in beijing calls them. who won the. good this is from the day i was arrested it states my name but it's my birthday to them and that i am a terrorist to slowly have them call it that good bye house says the chinese authorities never explained why they thought she was a terrorist. she tells us about the cruel conditions in the camps about torture. and humiliation you will feel saku with a lot of the quite a few of course we can we go you were locked up in a dark room we also had to write out lines of praise to the chinese communist party every 10 days we had to stick our arms through to get an injection we didn't know what it was about the younger women stopped having their periods. or going to get

the bill we had to do sit ups in the nude or dollars a pill or it didn't matter if you were 14 or $84.00 that's how they violated. the current talked. istanbul is home to around $25000.00 weakest for example visit in borno district like many have found refuge here some even say that the capital of the week is no longer inching junk but in turkey. in primary school the children of those who fled china a dad would be singing reading writing in their mother tongue. the teachers here say in china that would be impossible for many we go say that ethnic and religious ties with turkey has made building new lives here in istanbul easier
5:34 pm
for them at 1st glance this neighborhood appears lively bustling but the community has an open secret almost everybody here they say has a relative or friend who has disappeared into one of the camps in china dog of my brothers were imprisoned my sister was sent to account does i get outa are they dead or alive i don't know any more. i haven't had any contact with my family in 5 or 6 years not even a phone call i'm 99 percent sure that they're in the camps or in prison for them and as art and 7 that i haven't heard from my family and 5 years. dozens of versions of the same story. for some it's too painful to talk. china's ambassador to turkey admits that some weakness have trouble contacting their families he says steps are being taken. but
5:35 pm
he rejects reports of human rights violations inching junk. in the education centers are not prisons they are not concentration camps as some media reports say but in fact these places are more like boarding schools and the basic human rights of the. students are respected permitted which they can contact their families and receive visitors so you know we have the impression that some media and powers are abusing the subject to cast china's policy in a bad light and just don't. see these things very differently she would like foreign countries to put more pressure on china she says the whole roles she experienced in the camps of jiang have changed her and she's speaking up in the hope that others bad her fate. a radical feminist movement is taking root in south korea a growing number of women are banding together set on rejecting patriarchical
5:36 pm
expectations happily ever after for them does not involve marriage children or even having sex marriage rates are plummeting in south korea where women are expected to work raise children care for aging in-laws all with little help take a listen to 24 year old you tube or you hear on why she chopped off her long hair and vowed never to get married. the economic class and brings the new marriage movement because i think it's the most effective way to dismantle the patriarchy women's rights and interests can be better protected once the patriarchy has broken down off the floor the left when i went to the salon to cut my hair off the hairdresser asked me are you sure you want to do this or did you get your boyfriends approval why do i need my boyfriends approval when it's about my hair and i'm doing it by spending my own money. and people still comment on my looks and they still ask me when are you going to get married when you can start dating when
5:37 pm
you plan to find a man people still say things that are very sexist make it possible for. all of the way right now i'm not going to get marriage i'm not going to date men and i'm going to live a happy life. for more on this i'm joined by g.w. reporter michelle stockman who's been following this trend michelle what is wrong with marriage in south korea at least according to some women the women embracing this no marriage movement say that there's a complete 180 in terms of expectations for how they're valued before marriage and after marriage before marriage they may have been ambitious professional women highly educated but after they get married they're expected to put all of that aside expectations for personal fulfillment aside and really take care of the household not every marriage is different but in south korea it's a very patriarca call society and so women are expected to be subordinate to their husbands and take care of their in-laws even as they age and so it's trading
5:38 pm
a life of intellectual stimulation for one of labor and women are getting fed up there's a recent film that just came out was a real hit will bring that up right now it's called kim young 1982 and it depends a woman who has quit her job she's taken care of her child she feels the pressure of her in-laws really a lot of mental gymnastics that she's going through and it really struck a nerve in south korea's time. engine women ranted and $9.00 out of 10 whereas men gave it a $2.00 so a real indicator. men and women have about marriage in south korea but how big is this no marriage movement in the country there's no official data on how many women are embracing this lifestyle but if we look at some other numbers we can see some trends that are going on in south korean society if you look at nearly or if you look at decade ago single south korean women said marriage was necessary more than half did and now just one in 4 south korean single women say marriage is necessary
5:39 pm
and marriage rates are plummeting by nearly half since 1960 race so even if they're not consciously joining the movement the statistics speak for themselves they do really and women who are and bracing the no marriage movement or it's also called the 4 nose which means no dating no sex no marriage no children they're actually finding each other online and there are you tube channels sprouting up of women who are promoting this lifestyle i found one called solo deryni this is a channel that has 34000 subscribers and these are 2 single women who are going out enjoying their lives of single women they're doing things like make unders where they're cutting their hair or they're refusing to wear makeup rejecting that very pressurized south korean standard of beauty that expects women to look at doll like and they're just saying look we've had enough enough is enough and i don't want to do this anymore and i'm going to live my life happily as a single woman for a nose i bet a lot of people outside of south korea
5:40 pm
a lot of women would be totally on board for that you know so literary told me that they have received an overwhelming response from women around the world who have felt isolated being single and now feel like they have a community that is giving them courage to live happily as a single woman i have to ask this question of course what do the men in south korea think all about all of this well solo dirty. told me actually that they're getting quite a bit of abuse from men on line men who feel menaced that they have decided to stop trying to look pretty for men wait to be chosen by men and live their lives as they want so it's going to be a very interesting dynamic in south korean society that's going to play out over the next few years it'll be interesting to watch michelle stockman thank you you're welcome. the list is out of this year's additions by the un a cultural heritage practice is important to preserve and thailand has cost to
