deliver on your priorities with a parliament that works for you. and there's relief in europe for that the uncertainty over bridge that is now over leaders also break the deadlock in brussels and groups of push ahead with a green deal to make the e.u. carbon neutral by 2050. is great to have you along everyone always start with that historic vote the u.s. house judiciary committee has approved impeachment articles against president donald trump that charge him with abuse of power and of struct in congress or the committee voted along party lines 23 democrats voting in favor and 17 republicans against all the house of representatives is now expected to vote next week on whether to impeach the president. on the 2 charges the 1st abuse of power stems

from a phone call with the ukrainian president when trump allegedly pressured his counterpart to investigate a political rival is also accused of holding u.s. security aid to ukraine for political reasons well the 2nd charge involves trump's efforts to block the investigation into his actions and president trump has denied any wrongdoing. and the president was indeed quick to react at one point threatening that any future democratic president might face an impeachment process as revenge take a listen it's a scam it's something that shouldn't be allowed it's a very bad thing for our country and your trivializing impeachment and i tell you what someday they'll be a democrat president and they'll be a republican house and i suspect they're going to remember it. the president speaking there moments ago all over salad our washington correspondent joins us now
7:03 pm
from d.c. all over we just heard from the president he defended himself attacked the process as well as some point does see at any point acknowledge the seriousness of this situation that he's in. you really seem to be addressing his supporter base you were here when he responded and he was not really trying to convince anyone on the other side of the political aisle you just played his soundbite he said it should not be allowed that a president is impeached the way he is and 1 really essentially taking on some very democratic values here and that shows that he does understand that it's a grave situation and it's been staying on message throughout the whole proceedings here and calling it approved political witch hunt and essentially the republicans are arguing that the democrats can't accept the fact that president trump won the 2016 election campaign and that they see the only chance of getting rid of him in impeaching him removing him from office that however is this point at least
7:04 pm
unlikely due to a republican majority in the senate now this is all taking at a very crucial juncture we're about to enter an election year could this impeachment process help get him reelected we are entering some uncharted terrain here because never before in the history of the united states did and impeach president and a president that went through these impeachment proceedings run for reelection so that's new and is certainly going to be very interesting to follow how that will play out in president trump's election campaign and this is exactly where democrats are putting their hopes in right now they hope for a shift in public opinion due to that senate that's supposed to begin in january that could potentially be quite damaging for the president he's only the 3rd president to face such a senate trial and you certainly got his his space in the history books secured in
7:05 pm
conclusion now over for democrats could this backfire in the court of public opinion. well you could go either way lower and it really depends on how the senate trial turns out by the way wants a long trial he wants to take advantage of that he wants the bidens his political rival joe biden as well as his son hunter biden to testify there you also once the whistle blower testifies that the republicans are trying to. make a profit to benefit from that situation to turn the tide and really to damage the case of the democrats over solid reporting from washington thank you. now back here in europe it was dubbed the briggs's election and now the british prime minister boris johnson says he has been given the green light to take the u.k. out of the european union or johnson's conservatives power to a landslide victory bringing more than 3 years of deadlock and bitter wrangling to
7:06 pm
an end on the opposition labor party suffered a humiliating collapse and there wipe out its traditional heartlands well in terms of numbers the conservatives have won a huge majority far exceeding the 326 seats that they needed to hold the balance of power but there were big losses for labor and the scottish nationalist party made strong gains in the northernmost part of the united kingdom. now charlotte of course mr johnson returns to downing street presiding over a divided nation what are his main priorities in the coming days and weeks. well healing those divisions for one but he also wants to end the austerity of conservative governments and invest in public services this is one of the priorities that he mentioned during his speech and then of course the big topic of bricks that that will be the main priority this is what he mostly compay with a very simple message let's get bricks that done until january 31st well now he has
7:07 pm
to deliver on that. obviously in this election with his landslide victory the winner takes all but let's take a moment and discuss. what can only be described had a breathtakingly appalling result where did it all go wrong for them are there so many things that went wrong for them i followed the labor campaign closely and one of the issues was jeremy corbyn the labor leader himself a very divisive personality that he moved to ponty to the left of the political spectrum way too radical for some and he did not have a stance on breck said that was clearly his weakness he never said if he was for remaining in the european union or against and that did not sit well with voters that. possibly that dracs that saw go with him as prime minister could have
7:08 pm
dragged on and this is why voters in the hundreds to see and went over to the conservatives in this election which led to this landslide victory by boris johnson now another party did performed incredibly well is the scar of the national party what kind of consequences will that have. well this is going to be one of the main challenges for boris johnson now in the next 5 years as prime minister because those gains mean that the scotch scottish nationalists will now call for a 2nd independence referendum in scotland a majority of scottish voters is pro european they want to remain in the european union and they think as an independent nation they can indeed remain in the european union so we'll see those calls intensify in the weeks to come and maybe next year we will see that they are asking for that new referendum of course that
7:09 pm
could be a very tricky thing for boris johnson so many challenges lie ahead we see similar developments also in northern ireland and really boris johnson will be presiding over a very disunited kingdom pos reporting from london thank you and european leaders meanwhile meeting in brussels have broken a deadlock on a far reaching green agenda to make the e.u. carbon neutral by the year 2050 poland dependent on coal to commit to the deal and wanted to push the deadline back to 278 but the other member states pushed the agreement through hailing it as a major step forward. a council president in good spirits following a long day of debate shall michelle seemed relieved to have cleared the 1st obstacle of the e.u.'s climate action plan i am pleased with this important agreement just to be a both climate change 2 as they were important for the opinion to this site into

children's future. about future generations but i'm very happy about the steps forward that we made last night. last night after 10 hours of debate almost all member states indorse the goal of the e.u. becoming climate neutral by 2050 but one country did not commit to actually implementing that goal poland the reason for this exception is that poland's energy largely comes from coal and the country fears the costs of transition to a greener economy. poland holding back might seem disappointing but not to german chancellor angela merkel. that's a published business of who does and i understand why he's asking for more time and i'd like to say that of people pretend that the translation is just as difficult but those who really like 80 percent of those who are like 65 percent on nuclear energy that is not true. the plan is on the table now it's up to the leaders to
