w. . this is the dublin years live from berlin anger in london after britain's conservative party secures an overwhelming election victory protesters confront police say they won't accept boris johnson as that prime minister was a joke as conservatives made sweeping gains to clinch an absolute majority in parliament on a promise to get tough also on the program u.s. lawmakers approved impeachment proceedings against a president trump formally accusing him of abusing his power and obstructing congress mr trump is only the 4th president in american history to face i mean face

for the folks. in new leaders agreement green deal to make it europe carbon neutral by 2050 but heavy cold use of poland gets an alternative. welcome to the program we begin in britain where celebrations are prime minister barak's johnson's election victory were followed by clashes in the capital a lot of protesters are shouting that they would not accept mr johnston as the country's leader scuffles with police near the prime minister's downing street headquarters but were quickly moved up mr johnson succeeded in winning an absolute majority in parliament giving him the green light to push through his plans for bret said the landslide victory brings to an end more than 3 years of deadlocked on political wrangling. he's not only got an absolute column entry

majority now he also has the queen's instruction to form a government. a warm welcome back in downing street for him the election result is a personal triumph. and the afternoon he spoke. i frankly urge everyone on either side of water after 3 years 3 years of through an increasingly average argument i urge everyone to find closure and to let the healing begin. the bigger loser of the night jeremy carbon who had been offering a 2nd breaks at referendum his labor party lost seats in central and northern england which have been safe put decades many party colleagues harshly criticized the leader saying his extreme left wing policies scared of fotis he rejects that and says he'll stay in charge at least for the time being i was elected to lead the party and i think the responsible thing to do is not to walk away from the whole
10:03 pm
thing and i won't do that i will stay here until there is been somebody elected to succeed me and then i will step down at that point the s. and p. scottish nationalists made significant gains and now feel their demands for a referendum on scottish independence have increased in strength the question of uniting the kingdom has returned after breaks it this will be one of the biggest challenges for the prime minister. straight to the british trouble then. joins us from london welcome barbara what can you tell us about these scuffles with us. that was smallish groups of lead mostly left wing protesters some young women's groups some groups that call themselves socialists and they of course are not happy about what happened last night year about this huge election with this lens slide really for the conservatives and their show their anger and their displeasure of
10:04 pm
course not in my name and this is not my prime minister that's what we saw there were a few scuffles was the police spec and forest mostly fishing and shoving as far as we could see and it is a 1st sign that of course not everybody in britain is as happy as boris johnson himself at this stage is johnson has given his acceptance speech so that in downing street behind you wanted we hear how people reacted. i mean it's so it was the speech where he really tried to sort of appeal to the people across the divide it's a difficult thing to do because just saying oh please unite is not going to achieve that goal because he really has a steep political task ahead of him he really does need to do something for those people who voted for the conservative party for the 1st time in their lives and that's all these people in the deprived areas of the northeast and the northwest of
10:05 pm
the country the form industrial areas and they have expectations now it's not just bricks but they expect this government and boris johnson and particularly particular hugh has been sweet talking them throughout this election campaign to deliver at least deliver something something law that breaks it something for social policy something for the whole service for the schools and all those other sort of glaring social inequalities and big problems they have so far sean still has to do more than deliver bricks it even though that was his main problem is doing the campaign you have one of the big thing he promised to get done so does this result mean that it is now settled the u.k. will leave the e.u. by the end of january. definitely so because all the whole campaigning for reid to remain and the fight of people who wanted to stay in the u.
10:06 pm
it's over i mean this is this is it and he does have boris johnson does have a mandate the voters gave him a mandate to sort of get the country out of the e.u. on the 31st of january so this is going to happen next week already he will push the 1st part of the legislation through parliament and the rest will follow quickly so no way around that but what happens after that because the 31st is just symbolic date formally britain will have left the earth and union then we end the transition period and he will have to start negotiating which is europe about what the future relationship is going to be like so far we really don't have an idea of what she what she wants and where he's going to lead it is going to be hard and a tough battle or is it going to be a bit softer the next year will tell obviously in london thank you now to the united states where the house judiciary committee has approved
10:07 pm
impeachment articles against president trumpet charging him with abuse of power and obstructing congress the committee voted along party lines 23 democrats in favor 17 republicans against the house of representatives is now expected to vote next week on whether to impeach the president on the 2 charges the 1st abuse of power is based on mr trump's alleged attempt to pressure ukraine to investigate his political rival joe biden it's a trump's also accused of withholding u.s. security aid to ukraine for political reasons the 2nd charge of actions that the president attempted to block efforts to investigate his actions president trump denies any wrongdoing. and he was quick to react at one point threatening that any future democratic president might face i mean processed as revenge. it's a scam it's something that shouldn't be allowed and it's a very bad thing for our country and you're trivializing impeachment and i tell you
10:08 pm
what someday they'll be a democratic president and they'll be a republican house and i suspect they're going to remember it. starts a washington correspondent tell them a solid welcome a president that clearly in fighting mood does he acknowledge this as a grave situation. all right phil it really seems like it and you also seem to be addressing his supporter base when he responded to this vote earlier today not really trying to convince anyone on the other side of the political aisle you also said you just played a sound bite that it shouldn't be allowed that a president like him is going through such an impeachment proceeding so really taking on democracy in and of itself and it shows that he does really understand it's a great situation a grave situation you find himself in and also the fact that he stays on message he's been calling this a political witch hunt since the proceedings began and essentially the argument that the republicans are trying to put forward here is that the democrats are not
10:09 pm
cannot accept the fact that he won the 2016 election and that they believe the only chance to get rid of president trump is to remove him in after an impeachment proceeding that however is quite unlikely due to a republican majority in the senate ok so given this grave situation that is there any way in which this impeachment might actually work in the president's favor. when we are entering uncharted terrain filled so it's hard to say because never before didn't impeach president later run for reelection so it will certainly be very interesting to see how that all will play out in president trump's campaign that's where the democrats are putting their hopes for hopes in a shift in public opinion but in the end it all goes down to the senate shot and it depends how that will work out by the way wants a long trial he wants the bidens and the whistleblower to testify and other republicans really want to take advantage of that situation and turn the tide and
10:10 pm
either way damage the case the democrats are trying to make your own bill this is just the hope of the start of the start as it well of a silence in washington thank you. european leaders meeting in brussels have reached agreement to make the e.u. competent neutral by 2050 poland heavily dependent on coal refused to commit to the deal that was there for example it was who actually wanted to push the deadline back to 2017 but the other member states pushed the agreement through and held it as a major step for. a council president in good spirits following a long day of debate shall michelle seemed relieved to have cleared the 1st obstacle of the e.u.'s climate action plan i am pleased with this important agreement and just to be a both climate change it was very important for the opinion to this site through a common goal climate of the 20 by 2050 with a clear vision about the investments we have to to develop into interaction the

next yes this summit is the 1st since the newly appointed commission president who is still a fun day line unveiled a european green deal a master plan that might fundamentally transform the e.u. in the years to come it includes a 50 percent reduction in e.u. carbon emissions in 2030 climate neutrality by 2050 a carbon boarder tax on polluting foreign firms and a $100000000000.00 euro transition fund for countries dependent on coal and nuclear energy an ambitious plan funded lion will have to do some more convincing along the way finland however is already sold on the urgency of the matter. we all know that we have to do more and we have to do it faster it's about our children's future. about future generations but i'm very happy about the steps forward that we made last night. last night after 10 hours of debate almost all
10:12 pm
member states indorse the goal of the e.u. becoming climate neutral by 2050 but one country did not commit to actually implementing that goal poland the reason for this exception is that poland's energy largely comes from coal and the country fears the costs of transition to a greener economy. poland holding back might seem disappointing but not to german chancellor angela merkel. does a puppy trust and suffered us and i understand why he is also king for more time and i'd like to say that if people pretend that the translation is just as difficult put those who rely on 80 percent as for those who rely on 65 percent on nuclear energy that is not true and the plan is on the table now it's up to the leaders to bring it to life in the next few months and they don't lose brussels bureau chief mike hoffman was at the european council meeting and sent us this
10:13 pm
assessment of their wide ranging discussions the e.u. is also potentially on its way to becoming the 1st climate neutral continent in the world by 2050 it will be a very rocky way as we could already see thursday night here in brussels because poland said in principle yes we agreed to this as all the other countries but we will not implement the decision so what good is a decision if it's not implemented and the problem here is money poland structurally has the most to lose from this decision in the whole of the european union and they will only agree if the price is right and that is true for the whole undertaking we are talking about hundreds of billions of euros if this is to be a success but if it is a success and we're all still alive in 2050 we'll be able to look back to this summit that we experienced the last days here in brussels and say this is where the

crucial decision was made. most often in brussels now in football coach physics has extended his contract with the club until 2024 he took over the full 4 years ago after 7 seasons of dortmund and guided their rights to the champions league last season vol one an english title in 30 years back to this campaign the club's hoping that can keep them from number one until the season. we would see what happened so the plan is to make it the best time of our life it was not too bad but we don't feel up to feeling that it could not be even better so let's try to make really the best of it and. enjoy the ride enjoy the journey. and now an ancient tradition with a modern twist the slicing up christmas a deadlock is celebrating st lucie this day with a flotilla of illuminated contacts about $400.00 off the tops of the counts of
