subscribe to the documentary on you tube. boeing will suspend production of its 737 max the american aircraft maker says regulators continue grounding of the plane left at little choice we'll look at what the decision could mean for employees and suppliers. also on the show a look at how to import bad older cars in uganda is pushing prices up and creating unhappy drivers. this is your business report i'm stephen there's a blend thanks watching us aircraft. maker boeing will halt production of the
4:17 am
$737.00 max in january the 1st such production pause in more than 2 decades the decision comes as the popular plane's grounding looks to extend well into next year the boeing says it's already storing hundreds of max planes while awaiting recertification the freeze by one of the largest u.s. exports will impact suppliers airlines and finance years across the globe as well as the u.s. economy $737.00 max jets were grounded in march after crashes in indonesia and ethiopia they killed 346 people. and for more on this i'm joined by d.w. business reporter clifford couldn't clear thanks for joining me why is why is boeing choosing to do this now but basically the federal aviation administration has said that they won't be able to approve the 737 max to 2 to resume service again before next year which means that the boeing has had to take this decision now they had a board meeting in seattle and they came to they decided that now is the time to do
4:18 am
it i gather that boeing has still been producing at this point what they've been doing with those planes well they've got a lot of planes in stock stockpiled now for want of a better word they've got people you know there is demand for the planes but that they they still the demand won't really kick in until the safety issues are resolved and they need clarity right now they need they need to take these you know they still say it's a great aircraft and it's going to be the safest aircraft in the air when they finish resolving the issues that it has but basically what they're trying to do is they they can't build any more planes because they're just going to have a backlog of beef so because of all these that are already built and parked the big question of course is what does this mean for suppliers employer employees all these are connected sort of the boeing production universe well boeing is such a big company and it's kind of been a drag on the u.s. economy for several months you know looking out as well at that there's $600.00 companies involved the supply chain for the boeing 737 max which is a significant. number of people. however boeing has said they won't be furloughing
4:19 am
anyone on they won't be making any job cuts so clearly they're trying to limit the economic fallout from this but it will have a trickle down effect too to a lot of the supplier companies but again boeing hopes that by by introducing clarity and by resolving the issue that they can they can hopefully take the next step forward is there any timeline on when that recertification might happen allowing those planes to be delivered finally i mean i think boeing were hoping would happen in january. that was looking way too soon obviously. so we don't really have a timeline yet i think again that they've sort of drawn a line in the sand now and they say we want to fix this safety issue and the f.a.a. said we're not going to let you in the air until you fix the safety issue so now we know we don't have a definite timeline yet at least we can kind of see that old instead of constantly trying to fight against regulators now you just are seeing this said ok we are
4:20 am
holding production and we're going to move forward with the timeline then right boeing may be bowing to react to realities year clifford business reporter thank you very much for joining us. now wall street was already expecting a big announcement by boeing during the trading day and that made its stock the clearest loser on an otherwise record day our financial correspondent yens korda sent us this rundown. here's the beginning of the week the stock of the boeing was by far the weakest in the dow jones industrial average losing a good 4 percent in value by the way for the year the boeing stock is still trading slightly to the upside but it's not just about boeing boeing is sort of all eyes too big to fail it's one of the biggest industrial copper ations in the country and also a lot of deploy suppliers depend on boeing for example genelec trick with their engines that stock by the way also trading to the downside on monday but besides boeing the market looked a pretty good at the beginning of the week setting new all time highs for the dow

jones industrial average for the s. and p. $500.00 and also the nasdaq composite hopes for the trade talks between china and the united states so that was the fuel that the market needed at the beginning of the weekend the s. and p. 500 now it's up a good steward 37 percent and 2019 a lot. our financial correspondent yes court of sentence germany's shortage of skilled workers is affecting the construction industry in the country with residential construction floundering the number of permits for new construction was stagnant for the 1st 10 months of this year research also shows that the number of new housing units to be completed next year will fall far short of demands experts said the number of construction workers in germany has dropped dramatically in the past 20 years. over to africa now where last year uganda banned the import of cars older than 15 years and legislation was aimed at stopping pollution and

reducing accidents with unsafe vehicles the flaw has as legislation often does triggered some unintended unintended consequences ugandan's car dealers small business owners and drivers are not happy about it. this is one of compiler's famous cars known for venting delicious local bundt cakes this is a key summer has been on the road for over 25 yeahs. the only inherited from his father and thoughts that he could buy a new look for the family business over i might never afford a brand new car for another 1000000 shillings but if someone buys one truck for about 3 years i can buy that one for just 1000000 showing what you. really knows that the government has bundy petition of guys like you somewhere i didn't 15 ias from the month of sharing did it. the older cars assaidi to emit more carbon to the

1st we thought because we had to enforce the ban on the petition accused because it would affect their revenues but it surprising that we're seeing an increase in the increase in those who have been attributed to they did today. because it expires this month so people want it people had imported so many cars and they were. in mumbai and wanted to have houses as an individual hand so people want to so that they bit into name so that effective next year they are not affected by by the by some ugandans melfi that's the high cost of the new york could be shifted to passengers and push transport fayez up but the government maintains that that ban is well folded into public interest to benefit all ugandans and the environment. and now to some of the other global business stories making news china has threatened berlin with retaliation should chinese tech giant huawei be banned as

a supplier for 5 g. network infrastructure german lawmakers have been under pressure from washington which police walk away as a security threat china warns it could retaliate against german car sales. indonesia has filed for a consultation with the world trade organization over its palm oil dispute with the european union it claims discrimination the e.u. is phasing out imports of palm oil based biofuels due to the crops connection to deforestation hundreds of thousands of hectares of rain forest were burned in indonesian september only to make room for palm oil plantations. and other trade news senior japanese and south korean representatives met on monday for the 1st time since japan imposed restrictions on high tech imports from its neighbor in july a trade spat began after south korean courts ruled that japanese companies must pay compensation for forced labor in japan's occupation of the country. now if you're in the us you might want to hurry up and get that christmas tree or risk not

finding one at all the country is dealing with a serious tree shortage and the reason goes back some 10 years in time it's hard work shop and downed trees cutting off the lower branches and preparing them for sale but larry smith likes his job and he has no plans to retire. and i hope they may fail i. mean that's the way i really want to go. smith has been the christmas tree growing full 40 years as trees have graced homes throughout his home state of north carolina and even the white house last year one of his trees was selected to be the focal point of the blue room his biggest seller the locally grown frazier fir it makes up 25 percent of the market but these days supply is down about 8 years ago when the recession was here and the farmers were sailing through. this feels that they normally would
