nick spicer thanks for joining us authorities in the somali capital mogadishu say at least 78 people have been killed by a truck bomb explosion hit during morning rush hour at a busy security checkpoint is the deadliest attack to rock the somali capital in the years. it was the survivors of a massive truck bomb explosion being ferried to hospital out of all the attacks the capital suffered in 2019. this is the worst. i've been here all the beauty of it knocked me to the ground with its force i've never seen such an explosion in my entire life william but i hope that even when the mention of that was once a blast took place as i was getting off a minibus. off i didn't know i was on my way to work shut my eyes i got injured
2:02 am
some of. the tangled wreckage on saturday morning the people of mogadishu were gearing up for the new working week when the bombers struck. by their truck loaded with explosives was detonated at a busy control checkpoint the explosion led to many deaths and injuries. that are as diverse as ours most of those who died here were students who were going to school or university. in the middle of it a bus ferrying students to classes and lectures. no one has claimed responsibility for the attack yet but scenes like this of grimly familiar on the streets of the capital the un backed government in mogadishu is struggling to take control of the country the militant islamist group al-shabaab has carried out
2:03 am
deadly attacks here in the past now once again the people of this city are mourning their dead. and joining me now on the line is somali journalist below what has the somali government's response to this attack been. well the federal government that issue is in partnership with some of the international populous a walking. thing as a positive explosion one of it is. to the international community to assisted to evacuate some of the seriously wounded victims for special treatment abroad and the state of cretonne to take us to the countries that are willing to send the medical teams medical training to evacuate some of the wounded people to you stumble and don't have a specialized treatment and now on the ground as a situation. you have asked for locals to go to the local hospitals to adjourn it
2:04 am
because most of the victims are in dire need of blood and the country doesn't actually bank at the moment so authorities are saying that the one now is heightened security in and around every talk at all city of mogadishu the country's most populous city and a frequent hot spot for a deadly militant attack and so because he has been picked up because the militant group is no interest to the deadly attacks. especially the accounts and to prove that he's trimming the formidable force in somalia and that it comes try to appeal despite assurances from the government and its international partners that security has improved in the past couple of months and how are the people in mogadishu itself coping with this. well the country also might have undergone maritime one for the past 3 decades and one thing that has made the public in that country more resilient is the constant number of attacks and the constant number of deaths
2:05 am
they've been able to witness time in 100 again and these cases lead to so tragic because most of the victims who died in these attacks are as students and they were 20 students in one box and they all perished in a single minute from the truck bomb so do you have a chilling effect on the vast majority of young people especially for somalia where the population are very high of young people mourning or for the loss of. doctors and potential lawyers who all lost their lives you know the gold strike that has not yet been claimed responsibility for but overall on social media is growing 'd a sympathy or. to challenge the government to eradicate al-shabaab in time up with a strong security measure to ensure that the young people in somalia are not forced to flee the country but not on a day and achieve their dreams and just briefly if you would what needs to happen is for the situation to change. well the federal government in mogadishu says that
2:06 am
it is trying its level best in its capacity to handle and contain the militant group insurgency and to be strong so the government in mogadishu says that it's limited in that capacity in one sense that is a blockade and an answer by rather by the international community the u.n. security council that is imposing 192 that is limiting the federal government of somalia from giving weapons to their forces to be able to tackle the militant group head on one of the arguments that the generals are giving in somalia. the same weapon this militant group is using is the same one that is posed that the government is using so it will be very hard for them to go ahead on monday might use what you to. zimbabwe say they are asking the international community to give to that expectation to empower the term to security forces at a time when general elections are due to take place next year and african union troops have been in the country for almost more than one decade now are supposed to
2:07 am
exit the country so the government wants to support its security sector reform to be able to contain this insurgency and secure the country ok thanks a lot at stake somali journalist abdul aziz below thanks for that and just a reminder that while the jihadist group. is often behind these kinds of attacks there is no claim of responsibility as of yet for this attack time now to take a look at some of the other stories making news around the world. more heavy rains and flooding have forced thousands of families to flee villages and farms in western kenya the weather has caused has displaced some 2000000 people in east africa in the past 2 months killed hundreds rains are expected to ease if only at the end of the month. in lebanon hundreds of protesters rallied outside the home of the country's new prime minister demonstrators fired flares and demanded the

resignation of has job who is backed by the militant hezbollah group lebanon is facing its worst political crisis in decades protests against corruption and mismanagement have gripped the country since october. 3 skiers were killed when they were buried by an avalanche on a ski slope in south to roll in italy women in 2 girls all german nationals died when a sheet of snow broke loose above the teufel zags slope at 2400 meters elevation 2 other people were injured in the incident. russia has a trash problem just 5 percent of the country's estimated $70000000.00 tons of household waste is recycled every year moscow is looking to fix that starting in january it plans to put sorting bins in every building a new recycling program may help quell protests in northern towns with landfills
2:09 am
which receive moscow's garbage. when it comes to recycling big tortoise all of you over and maxime's of us are ahead of the curve for around a year now the 2 muscovites have had separate bins for recyclables at home they try to avoid creating unnecessary waste and signed up to an environmental newsletter for advice on recycling. and it's not just muscovites well worried about garbage i see it in my friends and my colleagues to the issues getting traction because it's become impossible not to notice the problem is mostly using the chat. up until now recycling bins like the one in the couple's court yard have been the exception rather than the rule but from january 1st moscow authorities promise that there will be separate containers for plastic glass paper and metal outside of residential buildings the reform will go into effect in 2020 across the country but critics say many garbage dumps aren't properly equipped yet and in moscow not
2:10 am
everyone is so sure about the changes. but we don't have separate containers are now building yet so even if you recycle at home it all ends up together with. separate recycling bins and that for a while now we separate plastic and cardboard. of course it's difficult at the beginning you need different bins and you need to separate everything. moscow's garbage problem has made waves far beyond the capital the city produces around one 5th of the entire nation's garbage up until now moscow has shipped out its waste to dumps all over the country sparking protests like this one in the northern city of our congress trash has become a political issue in russia one that its leaders can no longer afford to ignore at his recent annual press conference friday near putin said russia needs to change its approach to. peter's sector of household waste processing never existed in the soviet union and it never existed in russia we. from the ground up we've
2:11 am
taken the fundamental decisions. surveys show that most people in russia are ready to recycle at home but as the garbage continues to pile up critics worry that russia will just keep its problems . bush bush fire crisis to worsen as a heat wave temperatures into the forty's authorities have called on the military to help the widespread fires are also devastating. including koalas. cyclists near the city of adelaide happened across this part koala on the road in 40 degree heat cyclists said the koala approached them and climbed onto a bicycle appearing to be seeking help they gave the koala all 7 bottles of their water video of the incident has gone on viral on line.
2:12 am
and for more on australia's bushfire crisis i'm joined by reporter joel i think serve being here joel one lucky koala made it on to social media but there are many many more out there who were quite so lucky as a stray these environment minister says up to one 3rd of all koalas in one particularly hard hit region may have died in the recent fire season another estimate says that it could be around $1000.00 koalas that may have perished since this fire season began in september you've got to remember that from a very small population to begin with there's less than 100000 koalas in the wild or this thought to be and now this video we're seeing here is actually not the only video of thirsty koalas to emerge in recent months we've seen others and stray the ins are reaching into their pockets to try and help the koalas and online donation site has raised several $1000000.00 to try and fund drinking stations for koalas in
2:13 am
fire hit regions now it's not guaranteed that that money will actually use for that cause all that the stations could be built in time to help koalas in this particular fire season it's been a pretty devastating fire season bob by all accounts and a lot of the firefighters i think the great majority are in fact volunteers this is been stretching on for some time they've had to give up time and consequently income what's being done to help them well as straight as prime minister has just announced a new compensation scheme for volunteer firefighters he says that they can apply to have up to around 20 days of their time paid if they've been volunteering over this season. that's to help them in case that you know how to take time off work unpaid bills now the prime minister has announced this is scott morrison you might remember he's the man who famously went on holidays over the christmas period to hawaii in the middle of this terrible crisis he caught a lot of criticism for that and now he's attempting to play a bit of political catch up the scheme that he's announced is actually only going
2:14 am
to be for volunteer firefighters in one particular state and there are calls for this scheme to broaden out across all of the nations to make sure that all of those volunteers have been putting in time can be compensated for this service and just briefly i understand there's some other ideas coming from society about helping compensate for the cost of all this right strain is $1.00 of the strays most famous and iconic events is actually being targeted the sydney new use eve celebration the fireworks that take place around sydney harbor every year this is a spectacular event that's viewed around the world and city spends around $5000000.00 on these fireworks will now one petition is calling for this event to be canceled and for all that money to be used to try and fund firefighting a relief across the country now the city's mayor says that's not going to happen the money has already been spent on preparations and the event will go ahead ok. all right thanks for that. you're of course watching the news live from berlin
