award for bravery on behalf of his dead father. forecasters say it'll be the end of the month before there's any significant rain and a possible end to the crisis the next catastrophic conditions are forecast for this coming weekend with temperatures expected to top 40 degrees celsius. so as the bushfire emergency is forecast to war growing anger the response of politicians to what's now months of devastating blazes much of that anger is directed at the prime minister scott morrison he was forced to cut short a visit to one of the worst hit regions south of sydney after a confrontation with residents went off the bridge that was. all over the dam play out on the other hand a lot of money but we have the don't meet i mean it's not welcome your point.

is faith new south wales confronting australia's prime minister on thursday 2 people are reported dead in the village whose historic center of but to the ground on new year's eve here's how scott morrison responded to the angry residents just in the very strong feelings people have but most everything. there is still you know some very dangerous days ahead and we understand that that's why we're going to do everything we can to ensure that i have every every support but. australian prime minister scott morrison well the reaction in cobol go is not an isolated incident. that raging across the country with many australians fed up with what i say is a lack of leadership. when you see it with so we just saw that much of the. being direct to the prime minister yeah absolutely and a lot of that really does come from some of his own major missteps i'm sure you remember a couple of weeks ago morson was actually on vacation in hawaii during one of the high points of this fire crisis and now there's been another similar incident
8:05 pm
during new year celebrations morrison was accused of ringing in 2020 with a party at his residence and many australians are not exactly happy about that here's one of them he happens to be a member of the rival labor party here is saying look australia is burning there are 4000 australians stranded on the beach at mali as we saw in the piece well this happens australia's prime minister sits champagne while watching fireworks and then you can see his opinion of morrison's liberal party there we have to mention a spokesperson denied that morrison had a quote party he says this was just a few close friends and family members coming over for dinner but either way the optics here are not greats the hawaii vacation didn't look good especially as he and his government really under increasing pressure now to act but did this does seem to be more about more than just optics people do seem to be really quite angry absolutely i mean this is really about a lack of action on the part of the government many fire victims saying that that

help isn't coming fast enough the response of the federal government just has not been good enough especially in those rural areas that we saw with just been hit so hard by this and this is one person on facebook who's been updating his followers on the situation where his mother lives and you can see that here she lives in a small coastal town in new south wales and he writes there's no power there there's no mobile phones there's no internet no utilities the town is out of fuel and food no open roads to get in or out the water catchment for the bay has has all been burnt why isn't the government doing food drops or water drops why or why isn't it bringing in generators to the harbor where's our defense force here is you can see many people very frustrated. lack of response it's not only the federal government it's the state government as well you have to understand states are in charge of emergency services there scott morrison says liberal party currently in government in new south wales the hardest hit states the party they're being

criticized now for actually cutting the budget for response in terms of fire management earlier this year or last year it turns out as well the emergency services minister of that same state has also gone on holiday he is currently on vacation with his wife in europe he says he will cut their vacation short to get back to work on friday but again i mean unbelievable to see these people in charge off taking holiday so briefly co what has the government done prime minister morrison as we saw getting a lot more military involved we saw those rescue ships of the navy army aircraft getting involved as well deploying supplies also helping with evacuations he says he can only do that when the states request help the biggest discussion though is still climate change morrison's government has been denying the link between climate change and these fires but a majority of australians say this is a big threats we want to see more action coalesce we thank you so much. now we'll take a look at some of the other stories making news around the world or forces in indonesia

turkey have passed a bill allowing the country to deploy troops to war torn libya the movies aimed at shoring up the un recognized government in tripoli against rebel leader hafta and the so-called libyan national army the bill passed despite objections from the country from turkey's a main opposition groups other affairs that turkey should troop deployment that could further destabilize libya. and that is the bill was expected to pass through parliament and eventually it did giving the government a green light for a one year military deployment. but not before heavy debate in the house with opposition parties arguing vigorously against it and that is libya's internationally recognized government their government of national accord based in tripoli is a regional ally to turkey last friday turkish president or one confirmed had received a request for military assistance from the un backed administration for months on

the outskirts of the capital the government has been facing off against the forces of rebel leader general khalifa haftar. a leads a rival administration to the east of the country and is said to be preparing an assault to take the capital. the general has already taken control of its outer suburbs and has support internationally from egypt and russia. the fighting is threatening to plunge libya and a violent chaos not seen since the 2011 al sting of long time dictator moammar gadhafi some 2000 people have been killed in the conflict so far. ankara says by intervening it wants to reduce the risk of further instability in the region and protect its cultural and commercial ties there meanwhile nations on the other side of the mediterranean are concerned any foreign interference could lead to more civilian deaths and a new wave of refugees making their way to europe. we can take a closer look at this with. marty who's our founder and director of libyan think
8:11 pm
tank institute he joins us from london welcome to. how would turkey's troop deployment affect libya's conflict. well it certainly going to slow down the progress that city behalf there is rushing us news over the last several months in the making on the front lines all strictly where it's 2 interns who now go from the suburbs that is the popular the lightly populated areas around tripoli. tripoli and that's pretty significant given that there was almost 2000000 people in the road in tripoli let alone the hundreds of thousands that were displaced from now as last campaign in benghazi and in a dozen of the recent controls and i suppose that the incident is kind of the moment where the government of national called really needed it and it had been requesting for around 7 or 8 months from its european partners from countries that were into existence like like groups in the u.s. and and other european countries that and fulci those schools were well concert so
8:12 pm
if turkey does intervene this this is about more than just that 2 rival factions within libya they have to intervene this brings them into contact with other external powers. well it certainly does and those cameras have been there for a long time so i think it's difficult you can mark sayes about today is the bloom given that it's full and open and it's out there in the an ugly guy getting the guy who actually could get busted it so his followers approve this all. but there has been a 7 or 8 month campaign after that has used french procured u.s. missiles russian special forces and iraqi troops for the last couple of months you know agrees that it's a constant with larger maritime deal that the u.s. government in libya signed with with ankara early last month and that is about something very very different that's about the natural gas reserves are entry 3 trillion dollars worth 6 that are under the sea in the eastern mediterranean and
8:13 pm
that gives turkey a legitimate claim to destruct the ability of greece egypt and israel to exploit that without them and it gives them a almost a sort of whites that's a challenge and so it is certainly more about than just the local actions in that because people have been asking what wall what's in this for turkey turkey says while the valve regional allies say they were part of a ottoman empire this send more us more cynical view is that yes it's all it's all about those those fuel resources in the say. well it's certainly one of the of those things i don't know whether or not it is about the old little in part being being revived and. i'm not sure i buy that they could have worked really in the legal actions and it being the case they certainly work with the internationally recognized government it really worked with them after the request was made by the event that government was explicitly because they thought abandon the last month's 1000000 men and the un security council responsibility we shouldn't forget the data. on april 4th and invaded tripoli he did that in the

presence of until you consider as the u.n. chief. that some are only a week after that his word will never be national and national conference of the articles for peace and reconciliation ok perhaps actions so if you don't like it's a little more than what is right i don't want to get in this that this is this last question because western military interventions have often suffered because insufficient attention is given to what should happen when the fighting stops does turkey or indeed the libyan government do they appear to have such a plan. well it's a no go and it's in bailey there's not an expansionist land in a true government from west interventions that started from over the last couple of years plan is to try to stop and if anything it could be a revisiting of that as the process that he was involved in and it also you know this kind of frightening really saw as the real kind of balancing act when it will so that peace or peace loops can be revisit but at the moment we should think about
8:15 pm
it being an intervention the intervention has come from the way egypt and russia over the last 8 months have not done that with any elementary approval already of the fishelson symbol that we're going to. be doing to be been raining down through strikes on tripoli really killed at least 2 thirds of the civilian population that is considered on and so i think it's it's difficult market by the occasion we should mention religious context and see it as it has been since april who doesn't . thanks for joining us on a sat i'll give marty from the start i can stitchers. now to hong kong where they said his police chief is defending his officers actions tory against the protesters during a new year's day rally. his comments came amid allegations of disproportionate use of force to restrain crowds activists eager to support the pro-democracy demonstrations but fear for their future. reporter mathias a budget has been speaking with one activist we've changed her name and her

people 400 all together but the lesson is not to much. this is d.w. life from balance still to come what is next for europe's most powerful woman we look at the political priorities of german chancellor angela merkel going into the news. first though a woman and her 2 adult daughters of turn themselves into authours his in western germany following a 5 it devastated a zoo killing dozens of animals police say the women admitted ordering paper skylines on the internet apparently unaware that they're illegal in germany it's been a flames for me have borne candles cause the blood is on new year's eve. flowers and candles at craye felt zoo more than 30 animals were killed here after a fire broke out at the age enclosure many have come to express their sympathy. even clippard students work and everyone who knows the zoo is sad even outside of germany it's always better when something so terrible happens and no matter where
8:20 pm
it happens but in guess what i'm trusting i was here almost all day yesterday because i couldn't bear the sadness alone. it helped to see so many mourners here and i cried i couldn't have stood it at home so. a total of 8 apes were killed including one called masa europe's oldest gorilla who was 48 years old the fire in the enclosure broke out shortly after midnight it was also home to fruit bats and birds they were all killed in the blaze police believe the fire was caused by a sky lantern launched 4 new year a mother and her 2 daughters turned themselves into authorities soon after the fire reportedly unaware of the fact that sky lanterns are banned across germany. the people wanted to set off these lanterns with good wishes and of course they didn't think that could lead to what happened here. i must say i

think it's courageous of them to go to the police and say yes we're responsible i find it extremely decent and they have my respect. for the ape enclosure burned to the ground but 2 chimpanzees managed to escape the inferno but. the 2 survived the fire with minor burns we don't know how that happened they were the ones that dated and moved to another enclosure. while kray felt 0 remains closed investigators are examining how the blaze spread so quickly. the reporter. has been talking to people. the 3 women are under investigation in germany for launching paper sky lanterns. which apparently ignited a devastating fire that killed more than 30 animals here right behind me in the

western german city of k. felt at the local zoo the animals including irregular tans gorillas and some endangered chimpanzees either burned to death or died of the smoke inhalation according to local authorities the women turn themselves into police after learning about the disaster they're being investigated not suspicion of negligent arson an offense which could carry a prison sentence of up to 5 years in prison or turn it to flee a fine a very heavy fine the mood in the cities pretty grim as you can see right behind me some residents even called the deceased animals our relatives adding that this fire casts doubts not only about the specific situation of the local zoo but also on the real necessity of zoos in general especially in this advance year of 2020. or germany's political parties this pressure the conservatives are considering a future without. next year's general election before
8:23 pm
that one of the big priorities will be shoring up the e.u. as it confronts new challenges. angela merkel in her natural habitat at the most recent e.u. summit here europe's longest serving head of government has been forging compromise for 15 years yet there are telltale signs of a chancellor on her final stretch in office what was supposed to be her latest budget speech became a foreign policy road map largely removed from the nitty gritty of domestic politics i notice that it's very easy to be critical of the u.s. which no longer wants to take on responsibility in the places it used to but 1st information that points back to us here in europe m.p.'s increasingly see merkel focused on her european legacy. of i believe she is focusing everything on the germany you counsel presidency but that won't be easy
8:24 pm
that will take more than wanting a successful e.u. china summit in the fall just. short hearted it will be a tough program if she wants to celebrate becoming the big european leader and at the end of her chancellorship out city fire in motion with germany's e.u. presidency coming up in the 2nd half of 2020 machall needs to mend the strategically important marriage with france to fulfill her key aim a united europe that can stand up to an increasingly dominant china back home her own party worry that her refusal to actively back a successor could weaken germany's position speaking of political leadership i think she. should think about supporting someone so to give us surance the germans and the europeans and everybody out there who could play also a role for stability in that someone is still widely tipped to be his successor as

party leader anechoic come canberra also defense minister she recently called for a more active role for german troops on the world stage she offers the kind of clarity even merkel phones have lately been missing at the top i see only one deficiency that's the lack of a national strategy which shows more trope transparency about german interests and german strengths and weaknesses the current german chancellor isn't a lame duck yet but the clouds of a long goodbye are hanging over her office in berlin it's an open secret here that the main reason why angola machall continues to ride out her coalition woes back home is her concern over the stability of the european union at the same time many are struggling to imagine what a post machall germany or europe would look like. this is the dublin use
