7:03 pm
imminent and sinister attacks on americans we took action last like just stop a war we did not. take action to start a war i have deep respect for the iranian people they are a remarkable people with an incredible heritage an unlimited potential we do not seek regime change however the iranian regime's aggression in the region including the use of proxy fighters to destabilize its neighbors must stand it must stand now . solmonese blamed for attacks that killed thousands of people across the region but many in iran say his death amounts to a declaration of war as angry militia members in iraq and iran chant anti-american slogans and swear vengeance for the deaths of their leaders the u.s. is a devising its citizens in iraq to leave immediately. and for more
7:04 pm
now on the situation we're joined by journalist pesher mcginn who is covering the story for us in baghdad this just in we have reports that several missiles have hit the iraqi capital what exactly is happening where you are. so there were 2 rockets fired towards the green zone one actually in the green zone which is right area where the u.s. embassy is other government and international buildings and one of the rockets outside like it missed and 30 injured 6 people there were also other rockets fired in towards area which also hosts a military base with both iraqi and u.s. soldiers so it seems like we're starting to see the reactions that were promised for the death of the money. do you think it's reasonable to assume that this is part of the revenge that iran promised. i think i mean
7:05 pm
it's i think it's fairly reasonable you know we don't know as of yet who exactly was behind the attacks but we do know that it appears the targets were so what it is that this is part of the possible escalation that people have been fearing i would suppose i mean it is at the same time you know we should keep in mind that this isn't the 1st time the rockets have been fired at you know american interests and american or even at the green zone you know running back militias have been firing rockets fairly regularly over the past few months but you know we'll see how things develop and if the the amount of rockets not the amount of firepower and do you see towards american targets and is it fair to say that the fault line in this conflict in the united states and iran kind of runs through baghdad in a certain sense. i mean right now many of
7:06 pm
the events are happening about. you know by. the center for him people around the region to me and also it happens you play for both iranian and u.s. interests are very directly at you know clashing with each other. so better or worse you know just one last question i mean we've seen tens of thousands of people walking in a funeral processions today overall how are people in iraq and in baghdad reacting to the u.s. drone strike. reactions are divided you know some people like the protesters here squared have been protesting against the iraqi government the periphery months now were actually very happy to hear of death but that seems. to rock again become the battlefield for iran and us and then other people of course as we saw them were actually were very angry are still very angry and you know many of these people are either supporters of some of the militia
7:07 pm
groups or just people who are angry and also seen some pretty violent again. ok thank you for that such a good reporting live for us from baghdad. time now to turn to some of the other stories making news around the world indonesian authorities have been delivering supplies by helicopter after floods killed 53 people in the region around the capital jakarta the trench will rains that started on new year's eve unleashed deadly flash floods and landslides tens of thousands of people are still unable to return to their homes. thousands of mostly right wing protesters have taken to the streets of the spanish capital madrid they oppose the way acting prime minister pedro sanchez has handled the catalonia separatist issue sanchez says he's open to dialogue in a bid to end political deadlock and form a new leftist government. austria's green party has formally back to

a coalition deal to govern with the country's conservatives at a congress and sulzberger party members discuss contentious issues including a strict ban on headscarves the greens approval now paves the way for a new government to be sworn in next week. protesters have clashed again with police in the chilean capital santiago it was the 1st demonstration of the year against the government of sebastian pinera $26.00 people have been killed in violence that they get in october over an increase in subway fares. australia has called up 3000 military reservists to help firefighters battling blazes for weeks now more than 200 fires are burning across the heavily populated states of victoria and new south wales the scorched areas cover more land than the size of belgium and luxembourg combined the human death toll now stands at 23 along with hundreds of millions of animals high temperatures and strong winds show no

sign of letting up. australia's west wildfire season on record looks set to become a whole lot worse saturday in hasa temperatures and will strong winds to much of the country finding hundreds of blazes already burning out of control. the. meetings are still. very large far but i'm sure. to be just the family chinese who want to show. more than 100000 people. we're told to leave their homes across 3 states whilst there was still a chance to get away not everyone managed on kangaroo island 2 people died after a blaze broke containment lines and over took that call australia's prime minister says the fire crisis has reached a new level and has ordered 3000 on the reservists to help the sky one of the far
7:10 pm
as is stretching resources on the ground and they are clearly communities that need additional help and in response to that we must move forward 1st as a commonwealth particularly with the work of our defense forces and then integrate with the logical operations that are in place in those like you communities the announcement comes weeks after intense and bruising criticism for the prime minister who has so far insisted that managing the fires was a matter for individual states and rural fire service is alone fire services that have been stretched to the limit the australian navy has also been deployed to help evacuate fire affected coastal areas these people were rescued from mala qusayr in the state of victoria where a mega blaze forced 4000 people to feed to the waterfront on new year's eve they are safe and now a smoke from the fi is once again tense day into night. and
7:11 pm
those bushfires are also having a devastating impact on australia's wildlife apologists are warning that the months long blazes are pushing several species to the brink of extinction do you give your porter called joins me know in the studio what is the extent of the damage i mean when you look at these numbers it's actually shocking an estimated half a 1000000000 animals have been killed so far by these fires and of course australia is a continent known for these unique plants and animals many of them native only to the islands many of them also iconic and we want to talk about one of those animals a particular because and they've really become a symbol of the toll that these fires are taking almost really as wildlife i mean before the bushfires their population in the wild was already estimated to be as low as around $80000.00 as you can see i mean they're really being hit hard by these fires these are images of quality that have been rescued from the flames one of their largest homes is actually nick near new south wales as one of the states as you know being hit very hard by these bushfires and according to the country's
7:12 pm
environment minister almost a 3rd of the qual is there may have been killed in the disaster that's as many as 8000 koalas now here's the problem koalas are slow moving animals but i didn't know this their usual defense mechanism is climbing up higher in a tree and normally that would be ok for for a normal sized bushfire these are not normal sized bushfires right so that defense is not working for many of these animals that means that they are need of assistance and we're seeing a lot of good samaritans kind of taking care of koalas and even going to the rescue you may have seen this video nick earlier this is from a few days ago a koala bear so thirsty it approached this cyclist and your adelaide climbed onto his bike and started drinking water other people have risked their lives to save qual as this is a hunter who has so far taken 9 of them out of these burned areas brought them to a nearby animal shelter one of the biggest worries now for koalas and other animals is of course habit. have we heard 6000000 hectares i mean it's hard to put that in
7:13 pm
perspective we call it bigger than belgium the area that's been burned so far and habitat very important for animals like these there are fires in a lot of different parts of australia but i understand there's one particular area that conservationists are worried about yeah it's called kangaroo island it's in south australia we saw in the piece how devastated that area is it's actually australia's 3rd largest island it's pretty large there's many rare species that live there they don't live anywhere else that's what people are worried about the fires there have been described as virtually unstoppable the entire island is under threat right now and one of the animals that conservationists are worried about is called the kid i've never heard of the kid this is what it looks like it is maybe kind of a smaller version of a porcupine or a hedgehog you see it here they're already endangered they can normally survive a fire but you see here we circled it their spines can melt if they don't get far enough down in the earth they like to burrow underground these fires so intense
7:14 pm
that melting the spines off of these animals just one of many species of course under threat there the bigger picture here nick is that ecologist are predicting that these bushfires will lead to the extinction of several species in australia plants as well of course there's no way to know the expense of the devastation till the fires end and there is no sign of the fire stopping anytime soon ok so this is not just a story about people it's affecting most as well and ok. thanks for that. so even as australia battles with bush fires is preparing for one of the premier tennis events of the year is trailing open is just over 2 weeks away to that end a large crowd in brisbane watched novak djokovic in red here take on south africa's kevin anderson in the inaugural team event of the year djokovic edged his much taller rival in 2 sets to ensure serbia advances to the next round of what's called the a t p cup. and you are of course watching d.w. news live from berlin don't forget you can get all the latest news and information
