12:01 pm
and crew aboard the plane were killed when it went down shortly after takeoff a card to suspect mechanical problems caused the crash. carnival must continue i'm a touch. iran claims it's killed more than 80 americans after firing ballistic missiles at the u.s. military targets in iraq the u.s. defense department says it's still assessing the damage the miss on's reportedly hits 2 bases the assad air base in western iraq and another one in the city off and to be iran's revolutionary guard says the attack was in retaliation for the us assassination of general cost some money. it's all about the. story on the monitor the. iranian state television claiming at least
12:02 pm
15 miss silos fired by iranian forces have hit the. base in iraq killing 80 u.s. soldiers the numbers cannot yet be verified and so far there have been no reports of casualties from the united states or other coalition forces. this promised active revenge was for the killing of top military commander general salim ani the move has been widely welcomed across iran. crowds chanting death to america as iran's supreme leader ayatollah ali khamenei tells them their message has been delivered. in court. a slight force delivered last night but what is important is that the
12:03 pm
seditious presence of american. in the region should be and it fits. on record that they want the evolution of. the country's foreign minister has also spoken out. that we've said very clearly that if the united states takes any further action iran viewed respond accordingly and we would respond in a very harsh way but proportionately. u.s. president donald trump visited the assad air base in iraq in december 28th seen his response so far into the strikes has been measured tweeting all is well assessment of casualties and damage is taking place now so far so good. meanwhile security forces have been inspecting a site below the capital of iraq self-governing kurdish region where at least one
12:04 pm
iranian missile landed american forces are also based in the area but all in. let's go straight to the iran i'm joined by janice it is a constant in the iranian capital is that iran's supreme leader ayatollah ali khamenei has been speaking this morning as we heard in our report he's cool these strikes on the u.s. in iraq as a slap in the face of america what else did he have to say. yeah . slap in the us the leaders. he believed. you were about in our military. real group and you will be involved oh you will leave. that he said that the us presence in the middle east brings a lot. of always in all states to you it out of the
12:05 pm
good that it right we've also been hearing from president how some do honey let's take a look at what he said about the attack launched of course in reaction to the us assassination of iran's top military commander got some silly money and then i'll get back to you just. as easy i'm already cut off the hands of our dear so many. you saw his revered times near his body and videos and pictures. the revenge for that is to force america out of this region and. the real revenge and the ultimate response by countries in this region will be when america is expelled from the region and its hands of aggression is cut off for ever. all human. so reason that was
12:06 pm
a president rouhani saying really prevent is still to come also echoing what i had come and they also said how it runs foreign minister moment job if treated but his country had taken and concluded proportionate measures in self defense he also said we do not seek an escalation of war so what do you think is happening they're getting mixed messages do you think this is the really really the end of revenge from iran side oh can we expect more. i don't think it's a mixed message because all of them both the leader the president and the foreign minister are saying that the military response is over the leader says that the military action was not enough and all of them agreed that the revenge. the u.s. troops are out so the next phase is not a military anymore so they're not going to have more escalation in the region in
12:07 pm
terms of military actions but still he should expect that iraq is response. iran coordination i heard today that the. leader of iraq militia. strike last night in retaliation for generally money. steal iraq is going to retaliate. and. that these the commandos assassinations and we should just expect more attacks on u.s. interests in iraq but not from the rain inside. iran is up there still a shame because it has formed a rocky government mentioned by all that up tonight it's a day 'd that iran had sent a message bevo message to that iraq is on them and that it is going to hit that.
12:08 pm
exact a no left. in order to bar. troops and get them out of that they still don't know iraq because. of course the iraqi government has informed the u.s. administration all the attacks before hand so no the americans were prepared for the iranian attack and it showed the. troops by the u.s. presidents. he was very calm that everything good they knew that iran is going to and they were prepared for about so it's no surprise the. building no casualties reported at this by the american and iraqi officials but you iran says that many people. have been here still i don't know that this in this hasn't been confirmed as yet is that from the american side the iraqi ministries
12:09 pm
also saying they've been no iraqi casualties but to me more about the people on the street in iran we've sold millions of people come out in grief an angle over the assassination of gender silly money will they be satisfied with this military action on u.s. bases in iraq or would they be demanding more of well the ideology of the government are trying to. keep the part of casualties they say that people have been feel proud of this is more on the. back on a u.s. base which is the u.s. territory today iraq's defense minister bones about the attack and that. they say was a military a military strike on which the u.s. had used the amount of money and this was the 1st attack. they can
12:10 pm
avoid war on a u.s. base and that is carried out by iraq so they were in a government to stop listening to strike him being public opinion. packet so it's much more important the casuals it's meaning it's african and this has a symbolic gesture as you're saying is the spectrum of how many people were killed journalist and these are constant in tehran thank you very much for this update from that. i please let me now go to do you should she's standing by in brussels for us today what's the response been from e.u. leaders to this is a missile attack. it's interesting because the european union response is largely unchanged due to the overnight attacks they are still saying they're very worried and they're calling on all sides to refrain from for live further violence and to deescalate the situation now this is something as we know will not sit well
12:11 pm
in washington european commission president ursula vander lion and foreign policy chief joseph burrell came out after an urgent cabinet meeting this morning and said that it is very important for all sides to resume talks now this comes even as some european union governments themselves are condemning the attacks germany france the u.k. even finland have come out and condemned the missile attacks but not vonda lion and burrell they say the e.u. has an important role to play and that role lies in communicating with the iranian regime let's hear what underline had to say this morning. the congress is deeply affects not only the region but all of us and the use of weapons must now give space to dialogue. we all are hold upon to do everything possible to rekindle talk and there cannot be enough out
12:12 pm
so teary or so phone line talking about a dialogue and of course is huge concern as you said among. those about what's happening but can't even do anything concrete to deescalate the situation. it remains to be see what seen whether this will be effective but the e.u. can in fact play an important role in talking with tehran because it's something that of course washington doesn't do but the e.u. does have an open dialogue with the iranian regime particularly over the nuclear program which the e.u. is trying desperately to save hanging by a very very thin thread at this point the e.u. has invited iranian foreign minister jim wagner raef to come to brussels perhaps he'll even make it this week for an urgent foreign ministers meeting called for friday we don't have any confirmation of that yet but just again repeated this morning that he would very much like to see the iranian foreign minister here in brussels soon so we shouldn't underestimate the role that negotiation that talks
12:13 pm
does have to play at the same time as i said earlier i think the u.s. will very much be looking for a stronger condemnation of the missile attacks on u.s. bases and they do in fact affect europe because u.s. forces on the ground are protection forces for the europeans who are also working there in iraq and do you also need to for us the what consequences do these developments have to troops who are in the region. neer troops are in the region in a non-combat role they are training the iraqi military and that is also very important and the mission was suspended immediately were within 24 hours after the killing of customs money when it was clear that that violence was going to was going to escalate the coalition to defeat isis also suspended its training activities there so this has had a large impact on military forces in the region who were working very hard to help improve the iraqi military capabilities so that's not going to be
12:14 pm
a welcome development and while nato says that the mission is only suspended if things go the way they're going now it's pretty hard to imagine how how 500 people will again be safe in baghdad training the iraqi military forces half of the nato personnel have been now moved out of baghdad some of them out of iraq altogether as national governments have also done with their personnel given this development is still a danger that the assassination of generously monny will drag need to into a conflict with iran. i can't imagine that nato is not going to go to war with iran remember that nato acts by consensus only and there's no way that you're going to get 29 countries approving that at the same time as as i said it does have an impact on relations improving in the region because nato cannot continue its training activities with the iraqi military and of course there are 29 individual
12:15 pm
governments inside nato. also would like to improve relations with iran and that's not going to be possible while while violence is escalating on the ground nato of course will very much back its member of the united states and so this is a very great concern at nato headquarters if there is a danger to the united states or to other nato allies who are there on the ground in iraq this is a very serious matter and back channels will definitely be used to try to convince tehran not to launch any more airstrikes like this that could endanger personnel on the ground and again as you said earlier we don't know yet if there have been casualties or ron says there has been and the united states and iraq are indicating there hasn't been so for the prospects of call in the reason everyone must hope that it's the u.s. and iraqi stories that turn out to be true. thank you very much for that update from that. joining me now from up on the
12:16 pm
mentee studio is a member of parliament fritz he's a defense expert with the governing democrats in germany welcome mr philbin join 1st an initial comment from you in response to the strikes. well evidently i think the airstrikes are an acceptable it's it's simply not the way to proceed in a situation like this you have to really have to deescalate and start negotiating again escalating by striking each other will only makes the situation worse ok so it is unacceptable to have these airstrikes but what impact do you think these airstrikes going to have on the president's off a u.s. troops in iraq well the iraqi parliament has made a decision that it doesn't want the u.s. troops in iraq any more this should have a more important impact on the world washington says because you have to look
12:17 pm
at this from the iraqi point if you you know the americans have killed in general from iran on iraqi soil endangering iraqis the iranians have launched air strikes against you are american troops stationed on iraqi soil again endangering your iraqi citizens if i were in charge of the security and safety of my population this is what i would be worried about and i think. the the issue what the what the iraqi parliament has to say on this and on this matter should play an important role in evaluating the situation and the same damage him going to has already been doing some of its troops from iraq temporarily from baghdad in particular what is the message that. well we have we had some 130 personnel stationed in iraq with the with the task of training iraqi
12:18 pm
forces both the near baghdad and. below in the in the kurdish region and of course the mission has to have a sensible relationship with the risks involved in a situation where the base is under attack and where the iraqi parliament says we don't want foreigners in the country and the more we made the decision to move all particularly to the ones closer to baghdad where we judge the situation to be more dangerous after the iraqi the iranian air strikes which were also directed against a deal we have to reevaluate the situation in the north as well so you began your comments by saying there needs to be de-escalation what can jim need do on the diplomatic level and to kind of ease tensions now well considering that we have pretty good channels in both directions that we are able to the definitely talk to our american friends and allies on the one hand and to tehran on the other we can
12:19 pm
fund it we can we can sort of as an intermediary to simply convey some simple messages that might make it possible to deescalate i think this is a situation where diplomacy can be helpful. ok to the german government has of course condemned. strikes but i you actually happy with what the u.s. is doing there at things like this dog did assassination of general so the body. you know. i'm simply trying to look at it from the iraqi perspective if something like this happened on drummond's or we had. a visitor from a foreign country assassinated killed here by another foreign country i would resent that. he was a horrible person it's not like i would like to defend the man and his role in the region but i think from an iraqi perspective this is unacceptable and we have to we have to make sure that the basis for for for argument for dialogue for discussion
12:20 pm
is not historical matters like this. right of fritz french enjoy a member of the german parliament and a defense expert with the governing social democrats thank you very much for talking to us from d.w. you're welcome and can issue young muslims on the majority in iraq just as they are in their powerful neighbor iran but iraq has had to straddle the friends because of u.s. interests in military presence in their country the talkative killing of general custom silly money has now changed the dynamic in the region and it's taught us way in iraq could become collateral damage. when a u.s. drone strike killed tehran's top military mastermind it didn't happen on iranian soil but in iraq the country was a target for general cassim silly money and iran in their master plan for the region to extend shiite power using proxies doing. like the shiite militia that attacked the u.s.
12:21 pm
embassy many of these militant groups came to prominence during the fight against so-called islamic state shiite iraqis trained in iran who were central to defeating i-s. and many of them took their orders from solar money. iraqi lawmakers call out no to america iran's influence pervades iraq's political class to end the $28000.00 elections $45.00 former shiite militiamen won seats in parliament that election also made a deal of the prime minister he was long a member of a shiite party based in iran abdul mahdi resigned after mass and to government protests at the end of 2019 he remains acting prime minister but with the government on the verge of collapse protesters have been calling for a new political order one without corruption and sectarianism and without u.s. and iranian interference and merican soldiers ready to deploy to the middle east the position of the us in iraq has been shifting over the past decade in 2011
12:22 pm
former u.s. president barack obama pulled u.s. troops out of the country declaring that the war in iraq was over 3 years later they were back to fight i.a.s. this time on the invitation of the iraqi government. but now iraq's shiite majority parliament wants u.s. troops out washington says that's not happening iraqis know that if the americans leave so-called islamic state could take advantage of the resulting power vacuum and resurge and that's the situation no one wants. for some analysis let me join simon maybin from lancaster university in england he's a senior lecturer on international relations welcome simon we now have iran's response to the killing of its top general ready you think this conflict the train the u.s. and iran will go from here. so i think there's 2 different readings of this one is that we're caught in a cycle of tit for tat violence if you will that we're caught in this traditional
12:23 pm
security dialogue that dominates international relations we've seen it many many times before where one country responds to an attack the other comes we don't respond and it escalates and escalates it's very difficult to break out of now the other reading is that. you're reining in forces of the eerie and senior figures that were able to warn the united states that this was going to happen in order to say facebook prevent further escalation in the sense that there was no loss of life now i think that this is perhaps quite a creative way of addressing the situation and possibly getting out of there and the reason why it did that this is a possibility is donald trump a reaction to the attack overnight where his tweet was all is good so that suggests that there isn't this necessary anger that has characterized this which it feeds well for many many months now but that perhaps there is some hope to mizzen that there is possibly a way out of this crisis but salman how significant is the fact that this
12:24 pm
a missile attack was done by the iranian state and my the iranian military in the files when they have been attacks have been all done by proxy militia. yeah of course and i think what this demonstrates is that there had to be some type of response from the arabian state to the killing of cause and sort of money in order for the iranian government to save face they had to do it and in order to speak to their own people in order to demonstrate their credibility that tallahassee and that the islamic republic would not tolerate such a high profile assassination so i think that's why the revolutionary guard corps had to be the ones doing this rather than rather than putting it out to one of the shia militias that they work so closely with but marriage is it leaves the militia who was supported by iran people who deeply deeply ivette jenison in money meet the who things in yemen or the hezbollah in lebanon could they take independent action
12:25 pm
and retaliate for his assassination possibly i guess what we'll see very quickly is the extent to which it was all down to the saloon money who was responsible for creating and maintaining these networks or whether there's actually more to the networks than just $1.00 individual and i would imagine that it's more of the law that there are structures in place to facilitate relations between this by law. and the revolutionary guard corps force for example i imagine that there are other aspects to these relations not just comes into its own one individual that being said i wouldn't be surprised if there was some independent agency operated by conflict is by these who no doubt is going to be incredibly angry at the steps taken by the united states right they have to leave it there simon even from lancaster university in england thank you very much for that analysis thank you.
