a large nationwide strike is taking place in india unions and opposition parties are protesting over prime minister narendra modi's live upon the seas with this it could cut the working class union say millions of demonstrators have turned out they're calling for pensions and a rise in the minimum wage. if you've just joined us let me bring you up to date with the top story that we're following for you on the news iran claims it's killed more than 80 americans after firing ballistic missiles at the u.s. military targets in iraq the missiles reportedly hit the. air base in western iraq and the 2nd beast of the city of irbil in the north iran says the attack was in retaliation for the u.s. assassination of general customs but it's not offered any evidence of american casualties the u.s. defense department says it's still assessing the full extent of the damage. with me
2:31 pm
in the studio to welcome from the aspen institute and. baka welcome tyson now as we heard the pentagon say there's still assessing the scale of damage and casualties but let me go to the original tweet sent by donald trump when he cut off the attack and he said all is well assessment of casualties this taking place so far so good what do you make of that i think that was a narrow communication to basically communicate to the american public and to the world that that didn't lead to perhaps significant casualties now we don't have any word from the defense department itself but we do have word from the iranians which is probably not credible saying that there have been a number of casualties which would be a dramatic escalation of the tensions between iran and the united states we should recall that this is in some ways a reaction to cumulative aggression on the iranian part of the part of the iranians in saudi arabia in the straits of hormuz and the attack on december 27th that
2:32 pm
killed one american contractor but leading to money many more deaths that would be a significant escalation and the president himself yesterday said that if there was an attack this was prior to the attack in a press conference with the greek prime minister that there would be a very strong reaction from the united states and we're still waiting to hear from president donald trump he's due to make a statement later in the day so of course we'll be going back to that as soon as we get that in the meantime how important these 2 bases in iraq for the united states they were they were they were significant in the isis coalition and i think that the the recognition that there was going to be retaliatory action is what led to some repositioning of american forces we see a number of american forces i believe 3500 coming to the region the 82nd airborne so we see a reinforcement of the u.s. presence in the region some of which could go to iraq i'm sure that there are many consultations taking place with the iraqi government but it is quite significant. i
2:33 pm
mean our purpose the united states' purpose in iraq with the international coalition is to stop diet and create stability that would allow for terrorism to grow and that is clearly a setback in that mission so would you say that the that the targeted killing of genocide in money was coming to productive in terms of foreign policy and its stated objectives in the region. it depends on how you interpret it what the killing was intended to do if this was intended to be retaliatory action for the military effort which is what the administration the u.s. administration is currently saying then clearly it sent that message the u.s. ambassador to germany here has quoted and as has the special envoy for iran that 600 u.s. lives are in directly have indirectly been lost attributable to iran action in iraq and other places and their proxies over the past decade or so of course the most recent incident was on december 27th but if you're looking at you know deescalation
2:34 pm
trying to bring iran back into the international community trying to denuclearize the region trying to create stability that allows for cleaning up what's left of isis clearly this is a setback ok thank you very much for the tyson back and we'll be talking to you or disposed to donald trump has made his statement on these missile strikes but thank you very much for now. with another developing story that we're following for you more than $170.00 people have died after a ukrainian passenger jet crashed in iran it's not immediately clear what caused the plane to come down the you create an international airlines jet was on its way from. the head on to kiev that you create in capital and here koreans president of all demands that n.c. has broken off a foreign visit to return to kiev because of the crash. a field of burning debris lights up the night sky. the apparent remnant. as of the

ukraine international airlines flight that crashed shortly after takeoff from the iranian carrier battle was a bush iranian t.v. stations were the 1st to broadcast images of the crash including this model fine video which appears to show the plane going down. but it's daybreak that reveals the extent of the destruction and the human toll the plane was carrying $176.00 passengers and crew from several different countries mainly from iran and canada it was not the last year that i could have that much nobody survived all the passengers are dead not that bad off. at the international airport in kiev the arrivals boat lists the flight that never arrived. people destroyed. this man thinks his son was on the plane on the boat which yes most of which will be my son is

a senior flight attendant. iranian and ukrainian officials have both blamed mechanical problems for the crash but the airline says it's still trying to determine the coals. a statement by ukraine international airlines said the plane was one of the best in its fleet and that the aircraft had passed a safety check just 2 days earlier. as a rainy and small one another tragedy ukraine's president and others have warned against speculating about a potential link to the current flare up in iran u.s. tensions but current events of very much on people's minds are when you go to the i was watching the news of the remains hitting u.s. bases with missiles after 10 minutes i heard a must have explosion and all the hoses started to shake there was fire everywhere at 1st i thought the americans have fired missiles and i went into the basement to take shelter so i did at times as an infant although. a few hours after the crash.
2:37 pm
the ukrainian embassy and iran have released a statement saying the crash wasn't a result of terrorism that statement was later redacted. as investigators search on says a number of airlines have suspended flights at the iranian as space. and on the ground and the agency workers are getting on with the grim task of recovering the dead. and for more on the plane crash i'm joined by aviation expert steven wright steven from the information we have so far what do you think caused the plane to come down . this time we're really not sure it could be a number of items one is possible engine far some sort of catastrophic event in flight what particularly unusual is the loss of. this aircraft transmit study to altitude direction and so on and this is picked up on the ground we can
2:38 pm
all read this information on various websites and yet about 7 minutes after takeoff this data is just so used and that's particularly unusual so it means that something really bad happened. because a you and embassy in iran initially said the accident wasn't caused by terrorism but the word terrorism was removed from the statement what do you make of that could this have then been a deliberate act. well at the moment we're just not sure if it is a deliberate act it won't be very long before we know it we've got the debris we know where the aircraft is landed you can quite rapidly analyze the match so the objects that we can tell you and inside this aircraft and if there was let's say for instance if a bomb did go off it's really quick i'm fos to find the material because it leaps resit you the white tears the across the part is very tell tyo and we've seen these
2:39 pm
sorts of investigations before when aircraft have been subjected to these events they've known quite quickly that the causal factors were untoward. where it's at is a bit more difficult is if it was some sort of maintenance event where we then had catastrophic failure due to something that we didn't know about before and then all the recording. senses stopped we then have to analyze and try and predict what's going to happen that's the more complex and. in the coming days weeks we should know quite rapidly because the data recorders the black boxes as we know them they will be recovered by the security services they will be sent to our country i suspect that will probably be friends where the title will be downloaded stripes who i know put it into i fly like a flight simulator and see what the initial thought was that this crash was caused

by a mechanical what can you tell us a lot of the safety record of this plane and the airline operating it. well the 737. recently familiar with this is a fashion $800.00 aircraft it is quite modern it was released into commercial service around the year 2000 mark. very very popular really popular flies everywhere all over the world i'm the safety record of this aircraft is really quite good. and to see even though you know this crash happened just as iran was launching a ballistic missile has against doggett's in iraq could that have been a factor in any way in bringing the plane down. well i don't think so and the reason why i don't think that's likely to be the case. where you normally launch missiles you know where the missile launches are going to pay what you don't what
2:41 pm
you cannot envisage somebody doing would be to put a missile battery. 1520 miles down the end of the room white you know where the airports are you know the b. to airports they fly across day and die out regularly. so that back to me just doesn't quite stack up it's been taken out by a face to missile doesn't seem very plausible to myself right steven wright an aviation expert thank you very much for sharing your expertise with us. now only i spoke to matthew cooper from care for news in the ukrainian capital i began by asking him to tell us about the latest government statement on the plane crash. hi well initially the korean embassy in tehran had issued a statement that it said the likely cause was engine failure and that they were excluding the possibility of a terrorist or missile attack then that statement was deleted and now a new statement was released the new statement doesn't necessarily say that the
2:42 pm
cause is not engine failure it simply says that a ukrainian commission perhaps an international commission will look into the cause of the crash and that any statements about the causes before that commission makes its conclusion are are not official and so basically they just have stepped back they've walked back from providing any information about the cause of the crash. so that matthew in kiev before i leave you here's a recap of the top stories that we're following feel u.s. president on a trump is expected to make a statement shortly about iran's missile attacks on u.s. bases in iraq iran claims that 80 americans were killed at the donald trump is treated that all is fair. and more than 170 people are dead after a ukrainian and i never crashed at the head. you don't even state stevie says or 1000 just and crew aboard the plane were killed when it bent down shortly after takeoff. you're watching the diving news coming from above and i'll
