a loved one to united deshong we'll hear more about the victims and those mourning 10 dogs. and german chancellor angela merkel meets with russian president vladimir putin in moscow the 2 leaders have several significant points of dispute but can they find common ground on the middle east that made rising tensions in the region . and headed on for a glad you could join me the commander of iran's revolutionary guard has accepted full responsibility for the downing of a ukrainian a passenger jet on wednesday now raunch says that the firing of a missile that the plane was a mistake claiming human error off the plane flew in a sensitive military site 176 people were killed in that crash techron had previously denied claims made by the u.s.

and canada that it was responsible. an explosion in the sky this mobile phone footage was one factor that led western countries to suspect in the reunion missile attack on the ukrainian passenger plane finally after days of vehement denial iran's military admitted his guilt with armed forces on the highest level of alert the ukrainian international airlines flight had appeared to fly like a hostile target near a sensitive military site. when i became certain that this incident had happened really wished death for myself. i wished i had died and not seen such an incident politicians followed human error had caused the missile to be fired iran's foreign minister tweeted meanwhile the country's president has done rouhani called the attack
6:03 pm
a disastrous mistake they are both face comes after iran maintained that's a technical fault had been to blame for the crash even after u.s. canadian and british intelligence concluded that the surface to air missile had caused the tragedy. canada in particular has paid a high price for the recent saber rattling between iran and the u.s. this vigil in toronto was $1.00 of dozens across the country that paid tribute to the $57.00 canadian citizens many of them university students and researchers who were among the dead. these people that were on the plane they were young they were academics they were engineers his compadres mourned canadian prime minister justin trudeau called for justice for the families of the victims and said he expects the full cooperation of iran. straight to washington then where our correspondent 40 s. is standing by pablo 1st off what all the reaction so far at the u.s.
6:04 pm
to this admission from tech wrong that it did indeed bring down play. well michael was a bit of a surprise but it's actually been fairly quiet here in washington this morning a lot of the reaction to this actually came on friday in many respects and the focus has been very much on the the incidences we'll say that led up to the downing of this aircraft in fact president trump in an interview with one of the big networks here fox news and once again the imminent threat of attack u.s. targets 4 in the region which subsequently led to the assassination of custom silly money the rainy and general in fact what he was speaking about in this interview was defiant that there were 4 embassies being targeted it was imminent he said and in particular the embassy in baghdad was one of those targets so there's been
6:05 pm
a lot of talk more on reidy dot aspect of it and also the other area that's being discussed in relation to this downing of the aircraft is once again the what happened before the we got to this incident with many democrats and even some republicans saying that really how imminent this threat was i'm really whether it was justified on the part of the trumpet ministration probably you mention those tensions between the united states and iran of course could this admission of guilt with regard to the downing of this passenger plane could that have any impact on that relationship between the united states and iran. well let's not forget that once again this week on friday there were a new fresh round of sanctions announced by the secretary of state mike pompei o and the trumpet ministration this is of course adding to the already extensive amount of sanctions that are in place on iran on the part of the united states and
6:06 pm
they're focusing on several key areas of the iranian economy with the idea of essentially blocking further you know billions of dollars they spoke of from of revenue for the iranian government the idea here is to pressure iran to sit down and reach a new deal which as we know the drill bit ministration which is no longer part of the previous 2015 you clear deal what they want is a new deal they want to sit and they want they want this pressure that they're putting on them to lead to a new deal being reached. correspondent footy and yes it washington good to talk to you thanks for that. well let's take a look now at some of the other stories making news around the world at this hour taiwan's pro independence president citing wrong has been reelected by a landslide margin side 157 percent of the vote showing strong support for her tough stance against china in her victory speech she warned the beijing that taiwan

would not be influenced by threats. labor unions have marched through paris and other french cities to protest pension reforms planned by president and the new way to back home the demonstrations came after talks between the government and unions failed to break a deadlock a strike against the reform has disrupted public transport since early december. several 1000 people have marched through scotland's largest city glasgow to show support for independence nationalists hope to hold a referendum later this year on whether scotland should break away from the united kingdom britain's decision to leave the european union has increased support for scottish independence. now german chancellor angela merkel says that every possible effort should be made to adhere to the iran nuclear deal the terms of which are on has violated now the chancellor of the common soft emerging for some from some extended talks with russian president vladimir putin in moscow now on
6:08 pm
a separate issue merkel also announced that beilin would be hosting a peace summit as it seeks to broker a deal escalation of conflict in libya now at the press conference putin said russia will be part of those talks. were. well let's bring in the w.'s emily show in moscow now emily bring us up to date with what both merkel and putin had to say at their press conference. well there was really a broad agenda of topics on the top it on the table for both leaders today from economic ties to cover the crisis the conflict in ukraine to the middle east to the tensions there and the 2 leaders spoke for nearly 2 hours longer than they had initially planned when they came to speak to the press it seemed that you could see that the 2 leaders had been working together for many years they they both speak each other's language and they both seem to be rather satisfied with the meeting as
6:09 pm
well they both talked about it being productive and useful several times ukraine which was the main stumbling block or is the main stumbling block after the annexation of crimea in 2014 between the 2 countries was much lower on the agenda today and they seem to present a united front on many issues including the fact that they both want to save the iran nuclear deal which the u.s. last and also the fact that they both want to finish the construction of the nord stream to gas pipeline which was hit with u.s. sanctions last year so it seems in both of those cases at least that u.s. policy maybe bringing russia and germany closer now of course is a key player in the middle east merkel doesn't have to say it flew in did she manage to go on a some cooperation from the russian president with regards to that region. yeah fact one expert i spoke to ahead of the meeting said that putin would be in the
6:10 pm
driving seat and that germany is really an observer from the sidelines but merkel did achieve some concrete results when it comes to the middle east as well she had been pushing for a berlin peace conference on libya and putin today agreed to that he also talked about the importance of a ceasefire which is supposed to come into force in libya tomorrow so in that case in the case of libya both sides could present themselves kind of as peace brokers in the middle east when it comes to syria putin has been pushing european partners including germany to kind of contribute including financially to the reconstruction in syria and he mentioned the importance of that again today it doesn't seem however that he got any concrete commit some commitments from merrill there a correspondent and a show in a moscow thanks 70. well here in the studio now with me is hannah
6:11 pm
new men a green party m.p. who has studied conflict in the middle east to talk more about that libya aspect of the discussion so we understand now that merkel and putin have agreed that peace talks should be carried out here in berlin i mean concretely do you think that they can actually broke a march with regards to what is an extremely complicated situation in libya the conflict is indeed extremely complicated and we have just seen another round of escalation in recent weeks this monday and joseph well and i go must want to travel to get to broker to see how far they can get when they go see oceans and they couldn't even travel so i think it's of urgent importance that germany's source in all its diplomatic wait to see whether it finds a solution i think having your brooding peace conference in the end would be a very strong sign that could support but we still have to see how far they can go but russia surely is a key player in this it absolutely is it has such strength and influence in the region and now we're seeing germany leaning in trying its best efforts to to broker
6:12 pm
some peace but i do wonder i mean we're seeing 2 sides with perhaps differing visions could they be competing visions when it comes to russia when it comes to berlin and a vision for libya. i think they are in this on the same side when it comes to the escalation of the situation now with turkey saying they want to involve militarily with egypt and i'm seeing this and with just more and more arms going into the region i think they all want to see some the escalation so i think they're they on the same page by the discussion you're sure you're right from start ones it comes for future region of the guns own lips i control what come out of there who would be in power and how close might they be to russia might they be to the rabin countries or to the west but i think in the end that should be something that the libyan people decide so giving them the opportunity with the escalation and maybe another round if you're like to something i think would be a good. future do you think the e.u.
6:13 pm
should even be intervening and do you think that the european union for example has even a united vision when it comes to libya no own nation states a necessary on the same page if you think about the former colonizers for example it's really they have a different vision but we have seen some differences especially between france and italy when it came to libya which is why i think it was a very smart move in the foreign affairs council on friday to give the man the to germany and to heikal must to actually negotiate and to come up with a building with a building conference so i don't see any way that you could intervene militarily if that is what you meant but to deescalate and then bring everyone to a common page of for the future of libya that is the road that the e.u. has to play and i think germany is in maybe the best position of all the big e.u. member states to do this george or certainly better than war as was famously said with regards to these kind of conflicts situations can annoy him in a green and a.p.
