common ground on the middle east and made it rising tensions in the region. and taiwan reelected president and delivers a blow to beijing to sign on to balance to preserve taiwan's autonomy in the face of growing efforts by china to bring to ireland and to eat control. the air. on how an arm free glad you could join me the commander of iran's revolutionary guard has accepted full responsibility for the downing of a ukrainian passenger jet on wednesday now iran says that the firing of a missile at the plane was a mistake blaming human error after the plane flew in a sensitive military site $176.00 people were killed in that crash tucker on had promised tonight claims made by the united states and canada that it was
8:02 pm
responsible. an explosion in the sky this mobile phone footage was one factor that led western countries to suspect an iranian missile attack on the ukrainian passenger plane finally after days of vehement denials a bronze military admitted its guilt with armed forces at the highest level of alert the crimean international airlines flight had appeared to fly like a hostile target neah a sensitive military site. you know. when i became 'd certain that this incident had happened i really wished death for myself. i wished i had died and not seen such an incident politicians followed human era had caused the missile to be fired iran's foreign minister tweeted meanwhile the country's president has an rouhani called the attack
8:03 pm
a disastrous mistake the about face comes after iran maintained that a technical fault had been to blame for the crash even after u.s. canadian and british intelligence concluded that a surface to air missile had caused the tragedy on the streets of tehran relatives gathered to express the grief and growing anger. of the the crowd chanting just one word directed at the country's leaders resignation. we gathered here because of iranian leaders inefficiency because of some peoples in adequacy. our children were killed in the sky that's why we gathered together here where else do we go. in other parts of the city police fired tear gas to disperse crowds but feel a government apology is simply not enough. well here to talk more
8:04 pm
about this now is iran expert ted they said top a good to see you today so now this admission of culpability from iran's revolutionary guard of having shot down that plane it is getting a heated response as we just saw there in tehran is that yes very much so the grief felt by many iranians turned into anger quite quickly both abroad and within the country itself we are seeing a lot of responses on social media where people are blaming the revolutionary guards for the tragedy they're asking why they did not declare a no fly zone while they knew that the confrontation with the united states would get worse they're asking what took them so long to acknowledge their fault and also demanding consequence of some even calling for the resignation of the supreme leader of course and that's something security forces within the islamic republic usually do not tolerate so we saw tear gas and we're also hearing reports of internet connection getting worse in some parts of the country so that could
8:05 pm
indicate that the islamic republic is trying to shut down social media again just like it did during the last wave of protests to silence its critics to so many questions right now coming from members of the general public i suppose another question is you know why did it take so long to get to what is i suppose a very rare admission from the islamic republic what do you think the consequences will be of the fact that you know it dragged its feet on that well the problem apparently was that it took a long time until everybody within the islamic republic knew what had actually happened because you have to see that it was not iran's military shot down that plane but the revolutionary guards it's a powerful organization designed to protect the public political system and they said when they noticed that they had made a mistake they decided not to go public but had an investigation 1st and from what we hear the country's president and even the supreme leader only learned about all
8:06 pm
of that. that data and that it was then and then within decided to go public with it i mean what can we expect to see now because when we think about what we've seen in iran of late we've seen grief we've seen anger we saw a country then united following the death of saddam and that seems fragile now where on earth do we go from here and that's very hard to tell of course. the president has promised there will be more investigation and prosecution of the people responsible and that's of course what the people on the streets of tehran and what amending. there are rumors that the person responsible has already offices resignation and the tire ranking officials declined that and actual prosecution of a high ranking official of the revolutionary guards is unheard of in iran so that's not very likely actually but if the islamic republic wants to end these protests it will have to think about doing that right now. on expert with me here in the studio monitoring all of the fallout from this thank you very much indeed. canadian
8:07 pm
a prime minister justin trudeau has addressed reporters following iran's admission that it shot down that aircraft take a listen with iran has admitted to this very serious shooting down a civilian aircraft is horrific. must take full responsibility. canada will rest until we get the accountability justice and closure to the families deserve. more as washington now where. standing by for us of course we just heard there from the canadian prime minister justin trudeau a well there what other reactions are we having to iran's admission of having shot down that plane. well i just want to add as well the justin trudeau said something which was quite telling of the feelings towards this whole situation which we've
8:08 pm
seen over the past week or so between the u.s. and iran he said that obviously in this context the middle east these days dive contributed to this tragedy but iran did the right thing and took responsibility for the downing of this plane and for this tragedy so you know he's saying essentially that the tensions in that region contributed to this situation it's very clear what he's saying in some ways but of course if we move it here to the united states president trump has been defending his decision and his administration's decision to assassinate the iranian general custom sulaimani and so that's essentially what's being spoken about here president defending his decision. that from washington thanks poppy. and a 2nd act now is on the other stories making news around the world at this hour labor unions have marched through paris and other french cities to protest pension reforms plans by president emmanuel mccann the demonstrations came after talks between the government and unions failed to break a deadlock
8:09 pm
a strike against the reform has disrupted public transport since early just. northern ireland's main parties have formed a power sharing government after a 3 year standoff now the deal between the unionists the u.p.a. nationalists should say was brokered by britain and ireland 3 years ago should say quite the power sharing arrangement because it felt it was not being treated as an equal. german chancellor angela merkel says that every possible effort should be made to adhere to the iran nuclear deal the terms of which tech ron has violated now the chancellor made the comment softer emerging from extended talks with russian president vladimir putin in moscow now on a separate issue now also announced but it will be hosting a peace summit as it seeks to broker a deal escalation of the conflict in libya now at the press conference putin said russia would be part of those tools. well let's bring in w.'s emily show in moscow
8:10 pm
now emily bring us up to date with what both merkel and putin had to say at their press conference. well there was really a broad agenda of topics on the top it on the table for both leaders today from economic ties to cover the crisis of the conflict in ukraine to the middle east to the tensions there and the 2 leaders spoke for nearly 2 hours longer than they had initially planned when they came to speak to the press it seemed that you could see that the 2 leaders had been working together for many years they they both speak each other's language and they both seem to be rather satisfied with the meeting as well they both talked about it being productive and useful several times ukraine which was the main stumbling block or is the main stumbling block after the annexation of crimea in 2014 between the 2 countries was much lower on the agenda today and they seem to present
8:11 pm
a united front on many issues including the fact that they both want to save the iran nuclear deal which the u.s. left and also the fact that they both want to finish the construction of the nord stream 2 gas pipeline which was hit with u.s. sanctions last year so it seems in both of those cases at least that u.s. policy maybe bringing russia and germany closer now of course is a key player in the middle east merkel doesn't have to say influence did she manage to get on this some cooperation from the russian president with regards to that region. yeah fact one expert i spoke to ahead of the meeting said that putin would be in the driving seat and that germany is really an observer from the sidelines but merkel did achieve some concrete results when it comes to the middle east as well she had been pushing for a berlin peace conference on libya and putin today agreed to that he also talked
8:12 pm
about the importance of a ceasefire which is supposed to come into force in libya tomorrow so in that case in the case of libya both sides could present themselves kind of as peace brokers in the middle east when it comes to syria putin has been pushing european partners including germany to kind of contribute including financially to the reconstruction in syria and he mentioned the importance of that again today it doesn't seem however that he got any concrete commit some commitments from their call their correspondent and the show in a moscow thanks 70. one's pro independence president say one has been reelected by a landslide knowledge it saw it 157 percent of the vote showing strong support for a tough stance against china which does not recognize taiwanese independence and the island is still part of china. savoring her victory.

wands message of defiance to get spacing on her a lopsided win and her acceptance speech she warned china the taiwan would not be influenced by threats. iran or the people of taiwan reject a one country 2 systems model we respect to mock receive and our sovereign rights. i hope this election result sends china a clear message. that. her supporters were ecstatic. and very happy with the result today because we have made it known to china that top one is not to be bullied. yeah so i would tell you all. ever since i was small i was taught by my father that taiwan is a country for 21 years so at this moment i feel very moved to see so many taiwanese
8:14 pm
agreeing that taiwan has its own sovereignty democracy and freedom. to its. size main opponent national party candidate honcho you campaigned on resetting ties with china to boost taiwan's economy but that message failed to resonate with many voters. sighs government faces several challenges going forward beijing is likely to increase its efforts to isolate taiwan hoping to bring it back under chinese control. now don't forget you can always get the news on the go just download out from google play all from the app store and that will give you access to all the latest news from around the world as well as push notifications and breaking news now if you are part of a news story you can also use that to send us photos and videos of what is happening the way you are. coming up next our farming policies for sale are. metro takes a look at how the agricultural the shops now there to get you get latest news on
