the. u.s. president donald trump tweeted in english and farsi a call for transparency seeing the world is watching us protests continue in cities across iran all i use will be on the regime's reaction. well they are i spoke to dr julie norman from the department of political science at university college london and i asked her how significant it was that the protests as a voicing such open anger against iran's supreme leader this is extremely significant and such a change from what we saw just a few days ago during the funerals for asylum in salem money such an outpouring of unity just 2 days ago completely a change now showing real anger towards the regime not only for the tragedy but more the fact that people feel lied to by the regime for keeping that information for 3 days so out with the coming back out into the streets i'm calling specifically for for the supreme leader to step down is really

a major shift for iran and especially at this particular moment. what do you think the around regime will or is going to have to do to quell these protests. yes so this is a big question of course in the short term we can expect that the regime will be trying to make some kind of gestures restitution for the losses from the crash of some sort of restitution to families repatriation et cetera but again this is couched in something bigger and these protests are not just coming out of the blue to this again they're building on protests and sentiments that were here started 2 and 2 months ago in which there was a very violent crackdown on protesters then that was in response to the economic condition and the political culture more broadly so we'll see the regime try and do what they can to make amends for and for the tragedy of the plane crash but again there's something bigger that people are protesting about as well you did mention
5:05 pm
these protests at the end of last year you mentioned these brutal crackdown can we expect something similar again old norse you jeanne. oh and that is such a question right now again in november and the crackdown was very swift and quite intense at least 300 confirmed deaths but probably many more than that many people disappeared and detained as well and a complete internet blackout and shut down as well which made it very hard to follow what we've seen so far in the current protests a very different kind of dynamic again as your clip showed still the use of tear gas still the use of beatings arrest and detention the died while still herson worthy of criticism is is still later than we saw back in november and probably because again there is so much focus on iran right now because the tensions and it's it should situation internally is that such a different place the regime knows that people are going to be watching it very differently is good to talk to you talk to julie norman from the department of

was this meeting is about what kind of role they will have in the future. and their own money they want to still have some role duties and they want to share their time between the u.k. and canada now it's unlikely that the queen will tell them you have to stay in the u.k. and everything continues as the status quo but it also seems unlikely that she will you know cut all her ties with her grandson and that he will have no official duties anymore being a part time royal will be quite a difficult balancing act one day cutting ribbons for the royal family the next day a pair making appearances for money you can see what kind of difficulties that could have especially when it comes to the impartiality that the that the roles maintain as as being speculated that they might get a high role within the commonwealth for example a role that they can maybe do from canada which is a part of the commonwealth there's also there was
