a school now that was devastated to see how the country is coping 10 years on. haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere politically unstable and virtually bankrupt a nation torn apart by violence and battling for survival 10 years on from the devastating earthquake we visit an aid project in the capital port au prince we talked to aid workers and some of the nuns running a new school they will never forget the horror of the earthquake which struck on january 12th 2010 their school which once stood here was totally destroyed more than 100 pupils teachers and nuns were killed sisters israel was one of the lucky survivors. which i was trapped in it's the rubble and i was afraid i would die. because i just focused on trying to keep breathing

this. was buried for 2 days without food or water but managed to cling on most of the others died. the 10th anniversary of the disaster brings back painful memories. some of the nuns died they just had no chance in the earthquake. these are some of the children who were pulled dead from the rubble. after the school roof collapsed and fell on them. yes we had to bury them straight away. there was no way of refrigerating their bodies. right. the old school is no longer there the new school is like a shining beacon in the midst of overwhelming poverty rebuilt with the help of

donations from germany. 17000000 euros has been invested here and the school has nearly 1300 pupils. students aged 3 to 20 have a chance to build a future for themselves. at least for a few hours the children can leave behind the brutal reality of life in haiti here they're safe and have enough to eat which is often not the case at home. many of haiti's population of $11000000.00 have to get by on less than a dollar a day aid workers say more and more people are going hungry sister mary makes regular visits to pupils and their families in the poorer areas comforting words keep hopes and dreams alive for children like little.
