chants. but the guards don't comply. tear gas is used to disperse the protesters. earlier iran's military commander in chief and tried to quell ill feeling the tragedy had left him inconsolable how many said. but for some a rainy ins the headlines said it's all shame said one. unforgivable read another alongside a list of the dead. but. to find the denial and cover up over the past 3 days greatly added to the family's pain and suffering and to mind the. u.s. president donald trump tweeted in english and farsi a call for transparency seeing the world is watching us protests continue in cities across iran all i use will be on the regime's reaction. but let's bring in and they

got more of the now she is the diplomatic correspondent for the british newspaper the independent joining us from washington d.c. welcome to the program now you've been speaking to sources on the ground in tech ron what are they telling you all they concerned about the government response. well yes as we saw back in november just the anti-government protests that across the country and the crackdown was very very brutal deadly hundreds of protesters were killed by security forces directly shooting at people attacking people very brutally basically so those definitely concern in the back of people's minds but then at the same time when you see the demographics of these protests slightly different from what we signed november which had a very strong economic on your charm back in the november protest this time it's led by students broke at university campuses prominent universities and have gone
8:04 pm
it's basically the political elite joining in leading the chance although the chancellor very political with them at the same time type of reaction of security force us to this type of over middle class or the political protests have been different in the past still we're hearing reports of tear gas beatings and now potentially this as the leading into a violent crackdown against still wait and see right i mean you mention brazil measures and previous alarming response i mean with all that in mind when you surprised the public they come out onto the streets to express their anger with the government so i can say. well there is a certain level of risk when you protest on the street and iran in a public very well knows that in the past years eventually protesters have gone home where the protests have faded down because of the brutal repression not because they agree that says have been going anywhere so the grievances are still
8:05 pm
there and then when it wraps when this just becomes saw a route people feel like they have no other option but to take it to the 3 to this basically with the government that they did with the ukrainian hitting civilian flight on your own capital airspace to begin with just to let the civilian. like google into airspace in the middle of this operation and 3 days of denial to spirit sees the rumors that's just caused a lot of anger and mistrust right from the apocalypse and against their own undead you mentioned that because the evolution of all of this is interesting when you have had last week millions of iranians attending the funeral of the general killed by the us drone strike and now thousands protesting against the government and the revolutionary guard how divide it is iranian society. only a society is polarized and also divided there are so many opinions like any other
8:06 pm
society to be frank any president from talks about iranians being on the street as if the funeral for them soleimani wasn't real 2 or it was orchestrated no it wasn't here in washington you had a crowd that came out for president talked inauguration day after you had a bigger crowd that came out for the women's march so that's basically natural and any in any society there is even some overlap soft spoken to reformist political activism on the ground who condemn the soleimani killing because they saw it as an aggression an act of basically stumbling into a war in the condemned it and then at the same time they're condemning their own government today or yesterday for this big mass up against their own civilians at the end of the day we have to remember this is a potential war that hasn't even started are still years are basically paying the price for it so imagine what would happen if a war actually broke out between iran and the u.s. that's what makes most iranians very very concerned crucial point to make an egg. the diplomatic correspondent for the independent that british newspaper thank you

talk to aid workers and some of the nuns running a new school they will never forget the horror of the earthquake which struck on january 12th 2010 their school which once stood here was totally destroyed more than 100 pupils teachers and nuns were killed sister she cell was one of the lucky survivors. which i was trashed only through rubble and i was afraid i would die. because i just focused on trying to keep breathing. just tell was buried for 2 days without food or water but managed to cling on most of the others died. the 10th anniversary of the disaster brings back painful memories. yes. this is some of the nuns died they just had no chance in the earthquake. and eyes

of these are some of the children who were pulled dead from the rubble. after the school roof collapsed and fell on them. but. we had to bury them straight away. and there was no way of refrigerating their bodies. right. the old school is no longer there the new school is like a shining beacon in the midst of overwhelming poverty rebuilt with the help of donations from germany. 17000000 euros have been invested here and the school has nearly 1300 pupils. students aged 3 to 20 have a chance to build a future for themselves. at least for a few hours the children can leave behind the brutal reality of life in haiti here

they're safe and have enough to eat which is often not the case at home. many of haiti's population of $11000000.00 have to get by on less than a dollar a day aid workers say more and more people are going hungry sister marie makes regular visits to pupils and their families in the poorer areas comforting words keep hopes and dreams alive for children like little. i want to be a doctor. because doctors look after poor and sick people. who lack. haiti is a broken land sliding deeper into a destructive spiral of poverty violence and political crisis. society the opposition and business leaders are calling for change people have been demonstrating for months but there's no sign of any solution.

and we're joined now by a smaller market she is the head of mission of doctors without borders and is currently in haiti's capital port au pass welcome to you sandra now many sectors suffered in the wake of the earthquake but the health system was especially hard hit and today it's on the brink of collapse just explain that a little bit to us. yes absolutely your rights are a reminder of the staggering toll after the earthquake made that 60 per cent of the health care system was destroyed so it was really hard for any country basically to recover from that the problem is that 10 years on the situation is extremely critical hospitals like essential supplies such as oxygen or blood or qualified staff. and who do a lot of efforts were made in the reconstruction the focused on rebuilding the infrastructure but not necessarily under building the health care system and that
8:13 pm
is where the problem lies just to give you a very important number 15 years ago 16 percent of the national budget was into duty to health care and at the moment it's only 4 percent disses definitely not enough to ensure that the health care system can function so that what has been slowing progress has the international community looked away. what has slowed down progress i would say 2 things the 1st one in stat again there was a lot of focus on the infrastructure but don't necessarily on the system and also as you mention introduce problems that you just made the country has been unfortunately. stricken by a very severe political and social crisis for the past year and a half that has created new needs and that has also slow progress and when i say to
8:14 pm
create even you need actually after the earthquake doctors without borders open to the trauma center to take care of the wounded from the earthquake and now 3 months of 2 months ago we just reopened the same trauma center to take care of wounded from the violence every day we receive between 3 and 4 people suffering from gunshot wounds in that hospital right very briefly sandra is there anything that can be done yes we really think that the international community needs to pay attention again to haiti that the health care budget needs to be increased and that n.g.o.s will start where here after the earthquake that may have left the country since should come back and support the house ministry running call there from the south got a mark of doctors without borders in the haitian capital port a path thank you for sharing your insights thank you. well you watching it
