guard down the plane by mistake but the government says it admitted to the error as soon as it was informed by. this is meanwhile have been taking to the streets in a number of cities to demand that someone be punished for the tragedy. shouting and chaos as onlookers helped people shot and bleeding on the streets of tehran this video was taken near the square where crowds had gathered outraged at the cover up after iran shot down a ukrainian passenger plane. video shows tear gas being fired into the crowd. but. they dispersed leaving a trail of blood as they flee. in signs of increasing defiance images of iran's heroes are being desecrated ordinary iranians are speaking critically about the crash that even talking about it makes my heart beat faster and makes me sad that

i feel ashamed when i think about their families i'm so sad that he. is all of our media try to describe it as a technical problem because of their interests and political and international reasons but later development changed the game and they had to tell the truth or. pro-government newspapers are also voicing their disappointment and printing lists of the names of the victims shame reads this headline in farsi and on forgivable just days earlier the iranian regime had been celebrating its missile attacks on iraqi air bases housing u.s. forces. now that narrative is also changing the commander of the revolutionary guards telling the country's parliament that they had purposely avoided killing american troops earlier state media had falsely claimed they killed 80 in further signs of cooling tensions iran's top officials met with the emir of neighboring

qatar a u.s. ally both sides agreed that deescalation was the only way forward. all right let's get some analysis now from julie norman of the department of political science at the university college of london a very good day thank you for joining us we're witnessing these remarkable scenes of defiance of playing out on the streets of tehran. can this government survive this. well that's certainly a big question right now and as we've seen these protests have been carrying on for several days now starting saturday night continuing all through yesterday and then continuing on today these aren't just a response to to the handling of the crash of course protests were on moving very strongly in iran back in november as well and were crushed quite quite severely by the regime at that time so we've seen this challenge to this state building for
1:05 pm
a while the grievances that were there several months ago are still there and if it's only more intensified so there is going to be incredibly increasing pressure on the state and there are some calls for the supreme leader to step down others are calling for something a bit more moderate just calling for some kind of accountability to the crash itself so what this means for the state more broadly that's still to be seen but there are a lot of grievances on the street right now lot of grievances but i'm just wondering is the genie out of the bottle in terms of what kind of peace these protesters. right so at this point again there's a lot of different a lot of different motivations for people coming out right now the people who are protesting are taking great risk to do so as we've seen from the clips you are being hit with tear gas on reports of live ammunition and again coming on the backs of quite severe crackdown in the past so people who are out there really are very committed to pushing for some kind of real change when that said the extent to
1:06 pm
which that will be able to happen is still unclear and as we've seen it looks like this morning the state starting to use more harsh measures measures of repression which may make it more difficult for these protesters to say to sustain let's widen our perspective for a moment and turn to the regional conflict and also the bilateral a call that we've seen a some deescalation by both tehran and washington will it hold or do you think something this is not over yet. right so as we've seen today on the shakes me i'm from qatar was and iran over the weekend also trying to encourage this you know policy of deescalation we can assume that the official response from iran to the u.s. killing of solon monny was probably limited to the strike that we saw last week and we've seen calls from both washington and tehran for deescalation sense then so
1:07 pm
that's obviously what we're hoping for in the official scale however it's well known of course so in mind he was very instrumental in cordoning a number of militias across the middle east region in iraq in lebanon elsewhere and it's unclear to what extent those groups may or may not carry out and sanctioned attacks or continue to try and get some kind of some kind of response force on him on his death even outside of official iran responses julie norman of the department of political science at university college london thank you for your expertise. and i'd like to bring up today now with some of the other stories making news because many of the victims on that plane in iran were from canada and mourners across canada have been paying tribute to the passengers of the plane shot down in iran at a vigil in edmonton the prime minister justin trudeau said he would pursue justice and accountability for the victims' families and friends $57.00 canadians many of iranian descent play the appeal in

some tourists are trying to leave others are getting up close to the volcano. that's once in their life experience for us with this phenomenon. it's very very very interesting. the danger level has now reached level for just one not 2 away from a house or disarray which could affect hundreds of thousands of people living in the volcanoes danger zone. exactly with the experts warning now that the volcano eruption could get a lot worse let's get you an update of how things are right now g.o.p. correspondent anna santos is in the capital a manila not very far from the volcanic site where all this at rest of activity is taking place and you visited the site to you describe what you saw. we were up at the site earlier today about 6 miles away from volcano and all
1:11 pm
throughout the day we saw the volcano spewing out ash clouds these ash clouds were initially like white and then they turned to green and at some point they were all so black on the roads going up to volcano there was the roads were fish were covered with sludge this is because of the volcanic ash that mixed with rain so the roads were very slushy and slippery and it was very difficult to move from one place to another because the roads were dangerous also the ash fall covered entire swaths of plantations and pineapples in this part of the country and also you know the weight of the volcanic ash made the leaves on trees droop entire towns were covered in gray they looked like a black and white photo now against all of this some people or most people didn't really look like they were in a state of alarm a lot of them were going about their daily business like for example at the gate
1:12 pm
which is a very popular tourist site was done attracting a lot of visitors who were taking selfies in front of the volcano and really mesmerized by the terrifying beauty of its continued eruption you also saw farmers washing away volcanic ash from their livestock and just trying to go about their daily life and people were wondering where's the panic or where's the harm now a lot has been said about the resiliency of filipinos in terms of coping with natural disasters but i think that can be drill down deeper to 2 factors both starting with letter f. one is frequency we are one of the most disaster prone areas in the world so we experience natural disasters of all types on a fairly frequent basis so that. you get used to it and another hand there's also a mix of fatalism which. very much because of our predominantly catholic country being so you had to believe that you know these things happen for reason and that
1:13 pm
nothing you can do it anything about it and i just try to find ways to deal with it with you again and i just want to get in there very quickly what will happen to the people yes there is a sense of you know we experienced that before because obviously the philippines very disaster prone earthquake typhoons volcanic eruptions but still thousands of people have been moved out of harm's way what will happen to them because you know they have they have had to leave their livelihoods behind who's taking care of them . so about 8000 or 101-0000 people have been moved to evacuation centers or to some safer areas now earlier today the the government's latest update was that they are actually preparing for 2 very extreme scenarios one is where an eruption can take place over the next couple of days or a prolonged eruption which can happen for a series of months now we saw another volcano in another part of the philippines
1:14 pm
last year do this it just takes erupted continuously over a period of months and this is something the government will have to prepare for how are you going to keep these people who are in harm's way safe over a prolonged and indefinite period of time and how do you do that with a minimal disruption to their lives and their livelihoods right now that's what they're going to be busy with in terms of mapping out the different analysis and possible intervention now and sound also reporting from tucker thank you so very much greatly appreciate it. next we'll turn our attention to news your the death toll from an attack by a heavily armed to hardest on a military base there has risen to 89 soldiers one sorties that the attack was launched last week at the darn near the vol of tola border with mali was carried out by assailants and vehicles and on motorbikes while in december so many one

the government as to whether some will be moved to the mine lands however the mine land is also burning as well the arrivals never stop some fear that 80 to 90 percent of all koalas on the island are dead the wildlife park has become a vet and reclaiming the kitchen transformed into a treatment room sometimes vets have to put down half of all new patients. who are trying to do and he's not in the science and it is not easy these decide which of these animals have the best charms which of them have no chance. and send them in the right direction and it really is very difficult. not far from the wildlife park miles and miles of barn asked. soldiers roll knee area they collect dead animals charred or small poison kangaroos bards on koalas.

1:22 pm
appearing to promote his wife's acting career with the chief executive of disney at a film premiere last summer. lots to discuss with our course on a big mass in a london a big good to good to see you do we have any clear idea what harry and megan would like to achieve by stepping back in your morals and whether they are likely to achieve that. well it'll be many bullet points on the agenda these talks today really many things to discuss how are they really and visiting the role how they going to split the time between canada and the u.k. how many official functions are they still willing to at hand then then also about the finances this security of course is very very expensive who's going to foot the bill who's going to foot the bill for that and other going to be able to keep their oil titles all of these are questions that they must discuss today it's interesting
1:23 pm
this seems to be a new brotherly spirit between william and harry they have just released a statement a joint statement and they have criticized media reports newspaper reports that report all of the rift between the brothers say that's i guess is a good sign as to you know them all wanting to find a resolution to this crisis and now this decision has ruffled a lot of feathers that where you are in the u.k. let's take a listen to what some members of the british public have had to say about harry's no you can't just be a royal and then decide not to pay the i think that i said that taking that family and also wanted and paid in times past say yeah i certainly don't think we should pay for security if he wants to try him or maybe even so from all of this people to be alarmed on something special i would do it just i started to pull out a lot and now that i'm going to write a mistake he's made
1:24 pm
a mistake i don't think you really have to worry i'm quite disappointed you. can see william katie mystere story far from a smear. makes back so very good at how is this going to work for harry and megan staying part of the family. family on the one part and going private at the same time. that is really the big question is it possible to be some sort of part time royal and well they just have to jet in between canada and the u.k. all the time how many official functions will they actually be able to attend in the statement the royals the younger royals harry and megan said that they are still wanting to support the queen but on the other hand they also want to be financially independent now has been some speculation as to whether a new role could be food for prince harry that somehow you could maybe represent the commonwealth to have
1:25 pm
a new role within the commonwealth but this is all speculation and it will be interesting if there's some sort of statement after the meeting and we know a little bit more about how their future role is going to be shaping out. bigot in conclusion i mean over the weekend footage has emerged of the prince apparently. appearing to promote his wife's acting career could be one of the ways forward. has been a lot of speculation that they could be doing much more commercial and wondred would be magazines acting career the other kids be around prince harry has shown a lot of interest in several social enterprises and whether he's going to more and could possibly also draw an income from that there's also been reports that they have registered a trademark saw sig's royals so that is an indication that they are good willing to go more commercial but i guess we will know more details later on after this
1:26 pm
meeting they have to present somehow a way forward but the british public really wants to know how this is going to be resolved very mass reporting from london thank you. i don't mind now of our top story that we're tracking for you iranian security forces deny using long as ammunition on protesters demonstrating over the government's initial failure so admit that it had accidentally shot down a ukrainian passenger plane with a denial comes after video emerged showing a woman who appears to have been shot in the leg and authorities in the philippines are wound shall lava forcing thousands of them circling. you're watching your news from berlin coming up next the eco india the environment magazine don't forget you can get all the latest news and a nation by heading to our site that studio dot com on my lot in berlin on behalf of the new suit thank you for watching.
