the shouting and chaos as onlookers helped people shot and bleeding on the streets of tehran this video was taken near the square where crowds had gathered outraged at the cover up after iran shot down a ukrainian passenger plane. video shows tear gas being fired into the crowd. they dispersed leaving a trail of blood as they flee. in signs of increasing defiance images of iran's heroes are being desecrated ordinary iranians are speaking critically about the crash that even talking about it makes my heart beat faster and makes me sad and i feel ashamed when i think about their families i'm so sad that he. is on all of our media try to describe it as a technical problem because of their interests and political and international

university college of london a very good day thank you for joining us we're witnessing these remarkable scenes of defiance of playing out on the streets of tehran. can this government survive this. well that's certainly a big question right now and as we've seen these protests have been carrying on for several days now starting saturday night continuing all through yesterday and then continuing on today these aren't just a response to the handling of the crash of course protests were on moving very strongly in iran back in november as well and were crushed played quite severely by the regime at that time so we've seen this challenge to this state building for a while the grievances that were there several months ago are still there and if it's only more intensified so there is going to be incredibly increasing pressure on the state and there are some calls for the supreme leader to step down others are calling for something a bit more moderate just calling for some kind of accountability to the crash
3:05 pm
itself so what this means for the state more broadly that's still to be seen but there are a lot of grievances on the street right now lot of grievances but i'm just wondering is the genie out of the bottle in terms of what kind of peace these protesters. right so at this point again there's a lot of different a lot of different motivations for people coming out right now the people who are protesting are taking great risks to do so as we've seen from the clips being hit with tear gas on reports of live ammunition and again coming on the backs of quite severe crackdown in the past so people who are out there really are very committed to pushing for some kind of real change that said the extent to which that will be able to happen is still unclear and as we've seen it looks like this morning the state starting to use more harsh measures measures of repression which may make it more difficult for these protesters to say to sustain let's widen our perspective
3:06 pm
for a moment and turn to the regional conflicts and also the bilateral a call that we've seen. some deescalation by both tehran and washington will it hold or do you think something this is not over yet. right so as we've seen today on the. from qatar was and iran over the weekend also trying to encourage this you know policy of deescalation we can assume that the official response from iran to the u.s. killing of so mani was probably limited to the strike that we saw last week and we've seen calls from both washington and tehran for deescalation sense then so that's obviously what we're hoping for in the official scale however it's well known of course so money was very instrumental in cordoning a number of militias across the middle east region in iraq in lebanon elsewhere and it's unclear to what extent those groups may or may not carry out and sanctioned

attacks or continue to try and get some kind of some kind of response force on him on his death even outside of official iran responses julie norman of the department of political science at university college london thank you for your expertise. let's review let's review rather on some of the other stories making news many of the victims that we were just discussing on that plane in iran were from canada and mourners in that country across canada have been paying tribute to the passengers of the plane shot down in iran a vigil and admins in the prime minister justin trudeau said he would pursue justice and accountability for the victims' families and friends $57.00 canadians many of a ronnie and descent were killed in the disaster came out retired pope benedict the 16th has broken out to defend celibacy for catholic priests observers say the appeal in a new book is an extraordinary intervention in the clerical affairs of his successor

daily life and people were wondering where's the panic or where's the now a lot has been said about the resiliency of filipinos in terms of coping with natural disasters but i think that can be drilled down deeper to 2 factors both starting with letter f. one is frequency we are one of the most disaster prone areas in the world so we experience natural disasters of all types on a fairly frequent basis so that. you get used to it and another hand there's also a mix of fatalism which. very much because of our predominantly catholic country so you had to believe that you know these things happen for reason and that nothing you can do it anything about it and i just try to find ways to deal with you again and i just got to get in there very quickly what will happen to the people yes there is a sense of you know we experienced that before because obviously the philippines very disaster prone earthquake typhoons volcanic eruptions but still thousands of

people have been moved out of harm's way what will happen to them because you know they have they have had to leave their livelihoods behind who's taking care of them . so about 8000 or 101-0000 people have been moved to evacuation centers or to some safer areas now earlier today the the government's latest update was that they are actually preparing for 2 very extreme scenarios one is where an eruption can take place over the next couple of days or a prolonged eruption which can happen for a series of months we saw another volcano in another part of the philippines last year do this it just takes erupted continuously over a period of months and this is something the government will have to prepare for how are you going to keep these people who are in harm's way safe over a prolonged and indefinite period of time and how do you do that with

a minimal disruption to their lives and their livelihoods right now that's what they're going to be busy with in terms of mapping out the different scenarios and possible intervention sounds also reporting from. thank you so very much greatly appreciate it. and back here in europe prince harry will come face to face with the queen later today as the british royal family tries to resolve the crisis triggered by a shock and now cement that he wants to step back from his duties as a senior royal well the queen will host the talks at her country estate with prince charles and prince william also attending on the engine that will be how much money megan and harry will continue to receive their world titles and what commercial deals they might strike while the summit comes after footage emerged of the prince appearing to promote his wife's acting career with the chief executive of disney at 8 film premiere last summer and. lots to discuss with our course
3:16 pm
on a big mass in a london a big good to good to see you do we have any clear idea what harry and megan would like to achieve by stepping back as in your morals and whether they are likely to achieve that. well or there will be many bullet points on the agenda these talks today really many things to discuss how are they really and visiting their role how are they going to split the time between canada and the u.k. how many official functions are they still willing to and then also about the finances this security of course is very very expensive who's going to foot the bill bill who's going to foot the bill for that and are they going to be able to keep their oil titles all of these are questions that they must 8 mm and they have criticised media reports newspaper reports that report all of the rift between the brothers say that's i guess is a good sign as to you know them all wanting to find
3:17 pm
a resolution to this crisis and now this decision has ruffled a lot of feathers where you are in the u.k. let's take a listen to what some members of the british public have had to say about harry's move. you can't just be a royal and then decide not to pay the i think that i said that taking the family. for granted in peyton's house passed a tourney don't think we should pay for security if he wants to try and remove himself from all of this if he wants me out alarm or something special i'm sure it's just my story to pull out a lot of that and go with it if by the mistake he's made a mistake people think you have a boy i'm quite disappointed you. don't see william katie mystere sorry far from a smear. makes facts over it how is this going to work for harry and megan staying part of the family. family on the one part and going private at the same time. that is really the big question is it possible to be some sort of
3:18 pm
part time royal and well they just have to jet in between canada and the u.k. all the time how many official functions will they actually be able to attend in the statement the royals the younger royals harry and meghan said that they are still wanting to support the queen but on the other hand they also want to be financially independent now has been some speculation as to whether a new role could be food for prince harry that somehow you could maybe represent the commonwealth to have a new role within the commonwealth but this is all speculation and it will be interesting if there's some sort of statement after the meeting and we know a little bit more about how their future role is going to be shaping out. bigot in conclusion i mean over the weekend footage has emerged of the prince apparently. appearing to promote his wife's acting career could that be one of the ways forward
3:19 pm
. there has been a lot of speculation that they could be doing much more commercial and $100.00 would be magazines acting career the other kid be around prince harry has shown a lot of interest in several social enterprises and whether he's going to more and could possibly also draw an income from that there's also been reports that they have registered a trademark saw sig's royals say that is an indication that they are good willing to go more commercial but i guess we will know more details later on after this meeting they have to present somehow a way forward but the british public really wants to know how this is going to be resolved very mass reporting from london thank you. and in other news. clashes martie carnival opening a vent in rio de janeiro on sunday police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to

a handful of films basically picked up everything led by the joker in some ways i thought was great that the joker to get so many nominations because it was sort of it was a hugely controversial film but didn't credibly well the box office i found it really interesting that movie and then he combined the most successful is all of that we have right now in popular cinema which is superhero movies with the period of movies in the 1970 s. which is think is perhaps the best period that hollywood has ever produced in terms of quality and he's managed to combine both of those genres in one film but of course it was incredibly controversial a movie many people are saying it's a bit of an apology for. or insult culture so for of aggressive male culture so it's going to be very very interesting to see how the cademy react to these nominations and whether or not joker has a chance of winning big in any surprises i was surprised a bit that it's all basically straight white men that were coming away with all the nominations i mean we had no women directors nominated again this year 2nd year in
3:25 pm
a row i really thought got to get away who directed the women living to get the number of nominations for best picture but none for her as a director also on the diversity front i think the oscars has a long way to go and we didn't see many actors or actresses of color nominated i think that's a thing that's been discussed a lot in previous oscars and i thought there'd be a bit more representation this time around do you think you're going to catch a lot of flak for that lot of criticism because i mean it's just been 2 years since me to an oscar so why are yeah i think so i mean obviously they'll make the argument which is justified in some ways that they can only nominate the films in front of them and there were the films that were nominated are all phenomenally good movies and so it was a very tough year for anyone to get in but still i think it's a justified discussion to have and i think the criticisms that will direct who are the academy are just which one is your favorite my favorite is actually film it does have a bit of a representation here is a parasite korean korean movie it won the cannes film festival last year my favorite film of last year it's

a sort of hitchcockian comedy horror thriller what. director doesn't this movie is amazing he's mantras to to change temple and change honors like on a heart beat i think just in terms of style of directing acting and also just the thrill ride that he produces with this movie is 2nd and i think it's a dark horse to win the top prize but i'm really glad to see it's going so far and the oscars did they also pick up a golden globe. picked up for best international film which i think it's got a shoo in here at the oscars for as well but maybe got chance for some the others maybe director maybe even best picture of joke and some of the other big films but these but the i would be for novelists only they can get over the subtitles i think that's what i do thank you scott so good to have you with us all right you're watching it do you know your news coming up next in news. bill flaw you to the moon and back while the japanese were you know looking to take a life partner on his lunar adventure and yes you can apply.
