discover who. subscribe to documentary on you tube. how to succeed in business is there a recipe for success is intelligence the main factor youthfulness ambition or is it about you know getting a leg up from your family will be taking a closer look at the things you might need to get ahead in the business world 1st of all we need to look at what those people who do well in their jobs have in
5:31 am
common it depends on the workplace but in an office or a research environment it's important to have good language skills a fair dose of curiosity some creativity and an ability to absorb information and its relevance in short it helps to be smart but what if your overly intelligent it's not always a blessing my colleague has met up with some gifted young people and their families . some highly intelligent people do amazing things play the piano like a pro as a child skip years at school all songs math problems in the blink of an eye gifted people often score highly on i.q. tests most people have an intelligence quotient of around $100.00 only around 2 percent of the population has an i.q. higher than $130.00. so how does the education system deal with them.

hon and her brother philip or her sing for a concert. that last performance on a cruise ship was a success. we thought it would be a flop and nobody would come and listen in fact a 1000 people showed up for the concert in concert. tested with an i.q. of 143 she skipped 4 grades she solves math problems in a matter of seconds that others chew on for much longer. easy as
5:33 am
few as few. as sex and sex. little brother philip has an i.q. of 142 he's already skipped 2 grades at school he also has big plans. as i want to play the piano conduct and compose all at the same time. i've already conducted from the piano and it's not so hard you get. thank you can you socially out with their parents they travel the world doing concert tours together philip still goes to school. graduated from high school at 14 and is about to complete her bachelor's in music. their parents to both achieve high scores on i.q. tests they devote a lot of time to supporting their gifted children and their busy lives the family
5:34 am
found that school didn't provide what they thought the children needed. for that school rarely challenges gifted children. makes them a bit crazy in some just give up unless they have the good fortune to be able to skip grades and get their teeth into something interesting. or they find what they need a home school doesn't give the mind what it needs. if they do get that at home and they get support and recognition that's an important aspect as well. things were a bit different to mazembe lecky family. daughter yasmin is also highly intelligent but it took a while for back to be recognised. still she wasn't exactly typical for girls of her age. as a sea of wife she was always more interested in technology than dolls. yasmeen as

the 1st member of a family to go to university a secondary school only went to 10th grade and wasn't focused on preparing students to study so she switched schools for the last 2 years. the 1st school with set up to prepare students to learn a trade doing apprenticeship we were taught how to write applications but i realized that was not what i wanted. so she completed high school and went on to study. among her intellectual strengths logical and mathematical thinking. as though he has it this is the number to the right squared minus one the same here . and same here number squared minus one. for her degree in mechatronics and information technology she's designing a flying wing glider. it's good preparation for
5:36 am
a career in aerospace engineering. she enjoys the teamwork and gets on fine with her colleagues. but she is familiar with a number of not always flattering preconceptions about the highly intelligent for example that they don't like small talk never heard of her that i really did have a problem with that when i was younger i never enjoyed it and never understood why anyone would do that but once i started working and studying i realized it's actually quite important to have as a service that i'm not a cliché very intelligent people have so many talents they get easily distracted as a lot of them and well when you're young it can be hard to choose a profession. it can be hard to make a decision because there are so many fascinating things you could do. and in other times i am yet another preconception they know so much they come across as arrogant and i find it fit into how come when people don't get the things that you yourself
5:37 am
find easy to grasp and you have to be able to bridge that gap in a lot of i think from. the kristoff or a school in koenig's winter near bonn has had a stream for gifted children for nearly 40 years it uses pedagogical strategies involving teamwork into disciplinary studies acceleration and enrichment to challenge the students this is one of several clubs in which the kids work together on complex projects. many of the students felt like outsiders in their previous school. does understand matter. i was always bored especially in math classes. while the others had to go over the material again and again i would get it fairly quickly so i got a bit bored by yet hers and once i'd done an assignment i'd go on and do some more or do something again even though i could understand it all when i was country. this is the robotics club. they
5:38 am
design and build their own robots and program them as well. well that's not what. our robot is practicing kicking the ball into the goal. the ball emits and for red signals. and the sensor in the robot picks them up. that lets it locate the bone which it then kicks the. education research estimate that in germany schools provide only about half of highly gifted students with an education suited to their needs. the ample yeah that we have a class for gifted children in each year it's made up of children who tests have confirmed on gifted and are also high achievers that means pupils who get good grades are highly motivated and have demonstrated through the way they study and behave with others that they're the right material for the class these budding
5:39 am
scientists are going to present their work at a robotic olympics until now german schools haven't systematically provided support for gifted pupils but education that brings out the best in bright kids will help them in the complex workplace of the future and contribute to society as a whole. i'm sure you've heard this before but i thought i should point out that some of the most gifted and successful entrepreneurs were college dropouts bill gates. steve jobs just to name a few but remember not everyone who makes it in business is highly gifted and being super intelligent doesn't automatically mean you've got a head start today start up founders need other qualities to get ideas funding to turn an idea into a business but most of all they need energy ambition and courage. met up with 2 young entrepreneurs who embody all of that. meet the 20 year old founder of
5:40 am
pick up. the good simple 5. and his 20 year old co-founder along with one of their employees the 2 bosses were still at school when they set up their own business they had an idea and just went with it. because of unified orders from when you're at an event and there's a startup entrepreneur on the stage making a life pitch as we've done people think our lives are just about going to cool events and meeting cool people but it's not like that it's a lot of work people underestimate that startup founders work very very hard and as there are there companies developing an app to help high school students find out what kind of university course might suit them. users are asked about their interests for example and their personality is also taken into account the founders aim to offer a more comprehensive approach than similar apps roy's under is convinced that his young boss is on to something new. i didn't tell my
5:41 am
mother. i just told them i got accepted i also got accepted to bigger companies but after talking with the hospital engineer on skype and. hearing about this specific project that is about education. i just felt that this is the right place for me. the 2 founders grew up in a small village but now they're based in berlin germany slightly a startup scene. they think this is the best place for optimizing that for young people. we faced quite a lot of hurdles particularly when it came to analysis and development. psychologists or user experience specialists we had to spend a bit more time. getting familiar with those topics before we could get the 1st
5:42 am
prototypes together. it's also up to us to make sure we earn money with it too many people are interested in our target group businesses and universities for example we're currently working together with 20 partner universities who want to communicate with prospective students to find out if they'll be happy and stay the course. the pair started making money by selling used to look at bicycles that they did and sold with a 1000 mark. later they were going to parties in their village to fund their c. capital. they share an apartment to save money and work long hours to help finance their start up they also develop an internet presence is for the company so they going to release their own now in a few weeks time. off you'll feel about yeah we developed a lot of variations and had many trial runs before we got to where we are now and we had a lot of fundamental like we said if things continue like this will be
5:43 am
a problem problem solved problem problem solved then that's a really cool way to work and that's how it was for us. you have a lot of ups and downs but it's fun. and you tell yourself we've gone through a lot worse seen worse things. because the what i got yeah i'm a socialist. and you have to try to separate your home and work life a bit. we share a flat we work together all day long we have to try and switch off a bit even though it's difficult. to sit at the table and have dinner together and then we end up back at our laptops and then it's 2 am all of a sudden you go to bed and when you wake up you're still thinking about work that's not everyone's cup of tea but i quite like it's we're still young we can take it. going. jogging each day this year and then those little luxury is time out he says
5:44 am
it clears his head and it makes him more focused and more creative if i don't work . i just give it to mr goddard we believe we found our passion and and if it doesn't work out then we'll take it from there but even if i knew that everything was going to go belly up tomorrow then it would still have been worth that's simply for the experience and how this transformation in the fall will go on. the 2 entrepreneurs are happy with the path they've taken and that's despite the risks. well longside today's start ups that made me focus on work or take innovations there are still the traditional trades that require a different set of skills like plumbing carpentry and construction and business is booming in those sectors but fewer and fewer young people are interested in getting training for those kinds of jobs and that's
5:45 am
a big problem here in germany. construction work goes on in all kinds of weather. these jobs are strenuous than they're unpopular this building site has too few workers it's a problem for the sector as a whole which is struggling to find new trainees. an awful state when we don't have enough young people or what i call mid-range around 20 or 21 they don't have the stamina and it's one that we've got a condition they're used to getting everything from their parents. but here they have to do it on their own some of them lack logical thinking or or the spatial awareness of a little jollies on this portion of what i just. this is a new waste water pumping facility for the berlin water utility around 40 builders and iron workers are employed on the site. the lack of trained workers is
5:46 am
a growing problem their boss explains orders are up and he could hire more than 20 people on the spot but he's had to turn down contracts because he's understaffed. sales are highly tripled in recent years in the past 2 years we've grown from $50.00 to $80.00 employees off the top of other resources on the labor market or simply exhausted and an aging society is also gradually having an impact. food. headhunters have even come to the construction site to will away his workers they've become a valuable commodity to keep. them stefan here has raised wages in recent years his employees now earn between 16 and 18 euro's an hour. bob the challenged to get thought it was a matter of money in the name years and after that wage levels had fallen so far that it was no longer attractive to work in construction. that's been compensated
5:47 am
stepwise by in the past few years. but the industry still has a bad image that it was. and that's not only true of construction many of the trades have a bad reputation fewer and fewer young people are choosing to get training in professions such as heating and plumbing fitter. with. this company currently has 30 trainees learning to install and maintain heating and sanitary systems. i want to hear from them why they chose this particular profession most of their classmates at school prefer to go to university. problem it is those people get this image from youtube or social media that they have to do this or that or make so and so much money or they only want to work with computers and not to physically strenuous work or get their hands dirty and as much
5:48 am
as my time is a gunfight i can't spend the whole day sitting on a chair i couldn't bear that. one of the trainees came to germany as a refugee from senegal on back home he worked as a baker now he's in the 1st year of his training and they're still struggling with the german way of doing things. he has been working here is a little complicated because you have to follow the rules it's a bit more complicated then in senegal this is. the trainees get a lot of attention the company provides extra tutoring and 2 employees have been assigned exclusively to them. this plumbing firm also has many orders but too few workers it's become more and more difficult to find suitable applicants the owner is concerned about his trades bad reputation. this is. it's gotten to the point where lots of people have
5:49 am
a bad image of our profession i call it gas water in beautiful bathrooms were seen as dealing with phil and being dirty and stinking. and it's not like that anymore along each of our service technicians have a laptop it there's a lot of electronics involved and they have to know a lot about technology. the workers on the construction site don't worry too much about their image they say they're proud of their profession and what they accomplish every day. liam so for us it's a way of life you want to talk and we get some people who come and think they could get it shown to them quickly and they can do it but not everyone can you have to really want it. germany has a shortage of tradespeople i'm surprised that not enough people want to do these jobs despite respectable pay. if this trend continues it will eventually affect

everyone. so german firms are trying to address the skills shortage by raising wages as you heard there and looking abroad for workers now what if you were confronted with the task of running your own business or if you were in the running so to speak becoming a boss automatically by inheriting a company from your parents but suppose there are several children who could take over we take a look at one particular german family business. gave us. the managing director who wants to have everything organized when he passes on the leadership of the company but he has 2 children and that means making a choice. is a german clothing manufacturer that is print owned didn't run by its founding family 1st century. the current patriarch and his wife elizabeth have 2 children.

junior and bonita. sr says only one of them will take over the company the question is which one the family eat breakfast together every morning will that tradition continue once one of the other child takes over. it would be nice if we were to continue to eat together and spend time together especially as we all live here. and when you. the game of make sports and leisure wear underwear and night where it has a workforce of $1200.00 it also supplies companies clubs and schools with customized clothing everything from dying to cutting to sewing is done at its own factory in boiler ding in southwest germany it powers its production facilities from renewable resources to game markets its products through its 46 shops across

the country as well as online both sr takes great pride in the company's quality. said that when that puts it made in germany. both can go up as confident that both of his children have the wherewithal to run the company after him casting their cards. there will be no casting to see who is better but they mustn't sloth be up to assuming the responsibility of oxen zein the key thing is what parts they might follow. let's say for example my daughter were to marry and move away. that would disqualify her from running tree gamma. but if they both remain nearby there will be no way to avoid the difficult choice and talk to my daughters in charge of the e-commerce. she's done excellent work integrating this new element into our business. but she built up her department with

a great deal of determination i'd say that's an important talent to have in this business bonita globe is head of a marketing team and oversees 3 gamers online presence it's been expanding and is set to continue growing the online shop is one way to reach customers in other countries. online online has grown a lot over the past few years and now accounts for about 15 percent to sales a year and we're also expanding b. to be on line that we do corporate fashion for hospitals doctors and companies. setting up a separate online shop for them. jr has been introducing new technologies in production including tablets they provide their sewing staff information about the tasks at hand how many items of clothing they have to make and which cut pieces

to use. you expect efficiency to improve by up to 10 percent because things will just be much clearer we're already seeing an increase in performance they cannot check how much they get done each day. that's made it quicker and easier for them to fix things if they're doing something incorrectly there's more transparency all around. and. my son is great at motivating people especially when it comes to accepting innovation at the company. and that's very important. the cops feel a strong sense of responsibility toward their employees and talk about the game as a corporate family among the groups themselves family cohesion is an important principle. my brother and i get along very well and complement each other it doesn't feel like we're rivals we're pretty cool about the whole thing. one

possibility is that the child who doesn't become boss could assume another significant role in the company but the family home will definitely go to the boss . that's skin dusty film because it takes over the company but also get the house which is right across the road from the factory. says that should she be the anointed one she redecorate the family home from many family firms the can be hard to find a worthy successor to the boss here it seems there are 2 of them. in my family to be 4 kids to choose from to be thought that's all for me add the rest of the maid to join us next time until then check us out online you can watch any of the reports again on our website and get in touch on facebook or twitter but i.
