donia is the new woman wielding the baton and driving the action into outer boswell's production of could choose. and we visit the house in pamplona which has earned itself the title thanks to its award winning and an imbalanced concrete design. also since 2007 berlin fashion week has taken place twice a year in january and july and over the years it's earned a reputation as a great place for young designers to earn their stripes but young designers are by definition tapping into the mentality and aesthetics of millennial than even gen says which means that sustainability in the industry has grown radically in importance and that's where the neighbor new trade show plays a major role. sustainability can be pretty sure some of the environmentally friendly fashions on the sleigh or even runway ready symbol style

has moved on from the crunchy granola look of the past that the new and not the berlin trade figure for a sustainable fashion the focus is on where ability and basics the berlin label restore blood sisters hasn't sacrificed style in their pursuit of more ecological fashions but changing the industry will take time. of course everything goes step by step initially people would say to us your clothes we have your trade but you're not using organic cotton many facts are in is slowly catching up we've been working with manufacturers in india and china and are also trying to get them to implement fair working conditions you can expect them to immediately be able to produce our ghana cotton. club. the dutch jeans maker is taking a different route with my jeans you don't buy the jeans you grant them for 7 year olds 50 a month if you return them within a year the jeans are shredded and then recycled. the amount as i wouldn't
12:47 am
make new jeans out of all jeans we shred the your jeans to make yarn i combined with new organic cotton to make the fabric for our new jeans and. recycling is the sustainability trend of the new it all balls turned into new. handbags. vigen shoes using renewable materials like cork or to make the big fat souls of these punks caught and techno coppers recycled plastic. these spanish sneakers will run you $200.00 euros sustainability doesn't come cheap studies however show that fully a 3rd of all purchased clothes are never even worn so maybe the solution is to buy fewer more expensive clothes that last longer. and scott roxboro has joined me in the studio to talk more about sustainable fashion welcome scott

dana bash an expression that for me seems a little bit like an oxymoron because i mean let's face it the fashion industry is one of the most polluting industries on the planet so what exactly does this new new trade fair intend to do well it is looking at going to this niche which is still very small the sustainable fashion or green fashion and what they're trying to show the industry is that it is possible to produce clothes and produce really high end fashion in a sustainable environmentally friendly way and as we just saw where the main things they're doing is using a recycled materials to make to make their clothes so as a couple examples there in the piece you know we saw a couple of really interesting ways of using new resources up the shoes for example here are partly made from algae gathered from the ocean one of the consequences i'm a change is that we have huge algae production becomes a cheap material to use and cheap resource out of these boots here are from recycled plastic. which is also gathered from the ocean actually waste plastic that
12:49 am
was thrown in the ocean a spanish company recovers it makes these boots makes jackets and and bags out of recycled plastic i'm this is one of my favorites a clothing company they make these coffee lover t. shirts and the t. shirts themselves are made from a waste product that's produced when coffee is manufactured so these. examples of trying to use resources at least that are usually waste resources and recycling was always a bit warm garments only looks very good in that and very innovative but let's you know face that fashion is really the end to fits of sustainability isn't it i mean the whole business model is definitely built on our throwaway culture i mean just think of the fact that many fashion houses have 2 to 3 to 4 collections a year is is. the initiative like this just really sort of greenwashing or window dressing i think you could make that argument definitely i mean the fashion industry at the moment when they talk about sustainable fashion basically using it as a way just to sell more clothes and that maybe is the source of the problem you mention
12:50 am
collections is actually even more than i used to just you know 2 collections of your summer winter now the average in europe is 5 a year sorrow one of the biggest holding labels in europe has 24 collections a year that really does look like sustainable absolutely not not just quickly berlin fashion week has had a pretty hard time keeping up with its other rivals paris and london is is this going to be it's stick for the future so to the sustainability level i think that's probably one of the reasons why they're doing so hard behind the sustainability so if they can have a certain relevance but. it's a tiny portion of the fashionista at the moment is growing rapidly and of course the issue isn't going to go away so i think. it is on the right track and then you're back by saying we're going to get behind green fashion and try to make the thing whether or not that is a real impact on the c o 2 emissions of the fashion industry remains to be seen and we do have to start somewhere don't waste policy of never throwing anything out she's meeting with the guy you just you know just one of the old stuff like wearing the old stakes for

joining me scott ross perot. well traditionally the conductor of an orchestra was always a man and typically with a very strong personality but a new generation off female conductors has taken up the baton and one of the leading names here in europe is they a stone and christina posco are getting full points for strength herself she is the 1st woman ever to win the german conductors award in 2013 and she's recently started as music director of basel where we were able to catch up with her. maestro christina pasco conducting jack come up to chinese opera in rehearsal ahead of the premiere. the the. leanest and accounts below is a very special opera to me because it was the 1st one i ever conducted. the young. that's the fun was the fun. it's

ok what's more i think that obama and the pastor says she's had to go through a process over the years of finding her own conducting style. through a human about this i used to think you needed to have a special character to be a conductor and to conduct properly in the sense of going in and of course there are certain things you need to have and to learn but in the end the most important thing is what happens inside me of my relationship with myself so to speak to see it and my relationship to the score. and that's the basis for everything. the boss is thoughtless. it's gradually becoming more common for orchestras to be led by women after centuries of resistance to letting them wield the conductor's baton. but there are still those who wonder is that earth surface the musical experience.

so must be my because there's no such thing as a feminine interpretation. music and art in general needs a human being and many human beings have both elements in them there are certainly female conductors whose style is more stereo typically masculine than that of their male colleagues i mean side is very well developed and i need to work more on my feminine side. and. went away because i had that going to get. me much more seamless pasco grew up in a stone as the daughter of 2 professional athletes minus the important 1st impulse towards music came from my grandfather and he couldn't read music but he was fantastic at improvising on the piano and i wanted to do that too. so i decided i wanted to go to music school and i studied piano starting at age 6 or 7 but i didn't have a goal back then of becoming a conductor and then you know that just turned out that way.

christina pasko may not have deliberately started down the path to conducting but the new music director of the take out of basel is certainly turning it into a brilliant career. over the options of puccini we had to northern spain to pump low and i in fact long famous for the running of the bulls at the sound from mean festival every july but in a quiet almost rural sobber of the house in pamplona as it's known is famous for its utter simplicity and it's also a study in the possibilities with concrete and it needs a visit to appreciate its split level harmonizing with steep topography. usually when people think of the city of pamplona northern spain they think of its famous historic old town but there is a new landmark located in the company

in pamplona in 2005. they're currently working on a new building for the city. northwestern spain the special challenge was to make a modern design that blends into the old town. location was also an important factor for the concrete house. the greatest source of inspiration for all our works is the location. that's why in this case we designed the upper portion of the structure as a thin concrete shelf respond which fits in perfectly with the local topography. the architects also use the slope to divide the structure into 2 functional areas the upper one includes the living room and the kitchen the lower one is more secluded and includes the bedroom it's accessed via a short tunnel. that was in the parking for right now we're in the atrium of the lower part of the house which forms the center of the sleeping quarters we've also
