11:02 pm
u.s. president just spent 2 days in the swiss alps boasting about america 1st and those new trade deals with china mexico and canada before he flew back to washington today trucked fired a parting shot straight at europe tonight we ask is the european union now target number one for the tariffs. this is the day. they have trade barriers where you can trade they have tariffs and all over the place they haven't wanted to negotiate with past presidents but they're going to negotiate with they are frankly more difficult to do business with than china going to be able to make a deal otherwise we have to do something else i don't have
11:03 pm
a timeline but maybe i do in my mind. also coming up it has been 75 years since the red army stopped the nazi terror. and yet the battle over who gets to write that history it reaches all. the fact that i asked for the function regarding the starts of willed well to them yes i'm sorry to say but president putin is knowingly spreading historic lice. as you our viewers of p.b.s. in the united states and all around the world welcome but we begin the day with the final message that donald trump had for europe as he was about to leave the swiss alps this morning i'll be back no i'm not drunk the terminator this was trump the president armed with threats of tree terrorists at the world economic forum in davos switzerland the us president told the world's business elite that america 1st
11:04 pm
is working he cited the new trade deal with canada and mexico that replaces nafta he also highlighted the agreement with china signed just last week now it's important to note that trade tariffs on chinese goods have not been lifted and there is still hard and heavy negotiating to do with beijing but trump signal today that in his opinion the most difficult trade negotiations are just starting trade talks with the european union according to the president make dealing with china look like a walk in the park take a listen we met with the world leaders various world leaders including the president of the european commission who were going to start negotiating a trade deal with because the european commission was frankly have many ways tougher than china. i say that respectfully but that's the way it is they've. taken advantage for a long time and so we're going to have a deal i suspect we're going to be able to make
11:05 pm
a deal of the as we have to do something else. as the u.s. president there's some strong words about the european union to talk about that and i'm joined now by our very own of your our greatness he is in davos at the world economic forum good evening to you so you heard it trump doesn't get a deal he says we'll have to do something else is is that a threat well it can be perceived as a threat although we do have to at the footnote that the u.s. president has so far been quite unpredictable when it comes to his trade policies or his policies in general so it is perceived as a threat in the sense that the united states has already done what it has done with china we know that that was a full on trade dispute if not a trade war and something similar could happen with the european union as well however it's important to mention that according to most experts the united states would have far more to lose in
11:06 pm
a trade dispute of that kind with the european union that it has to lose with china because if we take into consideration all imports and exports of good and services for example in the year 2018 the bilateral trade between the united states and the european union was 70 percent bigger than the bilateral trade between the u.s. and china. so considering that and looking at what tom said today i mean he. very unflattering comparison between the european union and china was he telling the truth. well what is certainly true is that the european union has been often criticized for having a sort of protectionist approach to its trade when it comes to sensitive sectors that are important to certain countries and perhaps that is one important aspect you take into consideration is negotiating with the european union more difficult than you go sharing with china well probably yes because with china we're talking
11:07 pm
about one country and in the case of the european union we are talking about $28.00 countries that have very different interests very different problems and that of course want to protect their own sectors so any approach for a trade dispute or for a trade deal has to be considered by 28 member states soon to be 27 as we know but of course that complicates things and that is part of the nature of the european union and trump in china we have to remind our viewers you know they're not finished yet they use one that agreement was signed last week but they're still these 2 so you know it leaves us with this question how much energy will the u.s. president and his team have for yet another front in these trade wars. well it would still has to be seen at 1st is if donald trump is going to stay in power of course that is still sort of an open question but we could say that the
11:08 pm
team around donald trump is very willing to continue on with its america 1st policy and making sure that the trade agreements are switched between bilateral talks instead of the multilateral approach that the european union and the united states once used to support let's not forget that there was a big initiative to remove trade barriers and to somehow harmonize the standards for imports and exports between the u.s. and the e.u. in the transatlantic partnership that the u.s. ultimately ditched so this is important also to take into consideration and let's go now from trade wars to climate change the e.u. commission chief ursula found a lie and she put climate change at the center of the speech she delivered today take a listen the european green deal is our new growth strategy the
11:09 pm
novelty and the difference. to our fossil fuel. based model is that we will fall still growth that is not extracting resources but that gives back to the planet more than it takes away from it. and europe has the 1st mover advantage yeah the 1st mover advantage there is the european union's green agenda ringing any alarm bells among the business elites there where you are in davos. well to a certain extent brand not necessarily because investors or companies don't realize the necessity of fighting climate change they realize that there are risks by not doing so but the problem is that this is an idea that is very hard to sell especially to the regular people that ultimately decide where they put their money on that is why it was enough on the line also mention that group of 44 important
11:10 pm
investors in europe that asked the e.u. to sign a law to force climate neutrality because of course it is easier to tell people that they have to invest in climate neutral projects because it's required by law than just to simply say it's out of goodwill. and we know that when the president was asked today about climate change he could not resist a dig at the climate change activists greg to listen to what he said. you still feel that. you're doing enough you know how we how old is she. that sort of a yes that's true but what is your response to completely out of time it was and we have a beautiful ocean called the pacific ocean with thousands and thousands of tons of garbage flows toward us and that's what they are by other countries so i think greg has to start working on those other countries for our rights we're trying to get our heads around that one about the trash in the pacific. but is anyone buying the
11:11 pm
u.s. president's. pitch that the u.s. is leading the world as a prime mover when it comes to protecting the environment. well of course we have the experts here and we have the researchers here and of course also the environmental organizations and they came up very quickly as well as fact checkers to say that their records of the united states are not as rosy as the united states and are trying to put it that being said let's not forget that the united states is a big country it's also a very polarized country right now also when it comes to climate change so the attitude of people here in davos of those experts and leaders is that they will simply try to continue and work with those people who believe in the climate change crisis and who are trying to fight it they would wish for the united states president to somehow support their cause but considering that that is impossible as
11:12 pm
of now well they will simply try to work around it and as you said things could possibly change come november the w.'s have your are going to say joining us tonight from the world economic forum in davos switzerland here thank you. in jerusalem dozens of heads of state from presidents to kings are gathering to remember the moment when the nazi genocide machine was shut down the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the auschwitz death camp now it comes as the ghosts of anti-semitism are being seen more and more all around the world and that includes new york city which is home to a thriving jewish community and also the scene of a growing number of anti semitic attacks the boston heart has this report. there was this is a tense time for the city g.'s of crown heights
11:13 pm
a neighborhood in new york spiraled brooklyn. community has become the target of an increased number of attacks in recent months. now there's more police on the streets protecting synagogues and other jewish institutions. fire soon and his friends as students at a local yeshiva a jewish religious school. anti semitism is always been an issue in this ethnically diverse neighborhood but the recent string of attacks has hit until close to home. attacks where someone someone threw a chair at someone else or screaming kill jews there's different attacks that have a son that pointed a gun out so in that. i have friends i got punched by the middle central crowd hates where everyone walks. they see they're not afraid but the attacks has
11:14 pm
made them more weary they want to walk their selves specially at night. just yeah i think obviously because of the increase of the fear in the community because of the recent attacks. to me that i did that apart from that a feeling that you know you have that more careful often orthodox jews become targets of anti semitic hate crimes because they're doing this is plainly visible. and the colon is a rabbi in the community he knows being recognizable is a risk but he says hiding is not an option never be afraid never be afraid to show who we are never afraid to to remain and or run away never to the idea what kind of running away somewhere else this is this is our community and we're going to take whatever it takes to stay here and be strong but not to be afraid or to hide or to fear. but it's not only the orthodox community that's feeling uneasy bell feldman
11:15 pm
is jewish too and as with many of new york's jews you can't really tell from his looks born in israel he's been in the u.s. since the age of 3 a olive's in manhattan here to me says the mood in the community has changed since the attacks. people are talking about getting armed and carrying guns mace weapons and learning self-defense where it wasn't even a subject before. roughly one in 8 new york city residents is jews for centuries new york has been a refuge to jews from a little world this city is home to the biggest jewish community outside of israel that's why rising anti-semitism here is particularly unsettling jewish advocacy groups are saying the phenomenon is surprising as it is complex because the sources of these recent at the semitic attacks here in the united states are multiple that they're not all coming from white supremacists or white nationalists they're also
11:16 pm
coming from street attacks in new york. by young african-americans they're coming from black hebrews what seems to be constant is a sense that there's a copycat phenomenon now it's become sort of more involved that to go after jews who are identifiable on the streets. back in town heights who really his friends see they will back down the heat this stronger than he cheated if there it tempers . from new york back to israel one of the speakers at the event in ya bush will be. my year lao lao is a holocaust survivor who lost nearly his entire family in the book involved concentration camp he was chief rabbi of israel before retiring back in 2017 and w.'s tanya kramer met with him to talk about remembering and commemorating
11:17 pm
auschwitz and the show it is finished so full of feeling. good. many times you thoughts that people will forget all of us and if you forget it there is no reason to believe that another one will literally appeal. in the movie theater. and you have said that it was the rigidity of medicaid the 24 degrees people we had in the midst but you're not the only victims as someone said no to all the victims would you was but all the jews were victims. and if you come from all over the woods and you make india russia lie it meeting to remove them remember this this is
11:18 pm
a good side then kind then something from the holocaust a nice gives a promise that he would never get the word holocaust farm also one small action taken against the rising numbers of anti semitic attacks what do you think needs to be done 1st of all education to speak in school hold a schools about this rigidity of the 2nd world war about the tragedy of the holocaust to speak to teach to explain most of the truth to they don't know it this is the one number 2 to make it to fix the laws in the parliaments of home all over the word against on place and because this says point is to enforce those laws we exist already in many countries in many politicians too to make it to a to f.
11:19 pm
they call diggy. in the wise words there from red by israel may year allow speaking with the use tanya kramer well over the next few days there will be 2 commemorations of the 75th anniversary of the liberation of auschwitz the 1st takes place tomorrow in jerusalem the other next monday at the site in poland poland's president duda will not be there tomorrow he's boycotting the event the latest punch in an ongoing fight between were saul and moscow over who gets to write history the polish government accuses russian president putin of pushing reversion its lies about the 2nd world war a narrative in which poland's victimisation by the nazis is question what israel is not just a bystander here its relations with poland are also strange last year israel's foreign minister israel cuts said that and i'm quoting here polls suckle
11:20 pm
anti-semitism with their mother's milk and all that drew this response from polish president due to. saw sports much 2 of those there are jews who were born in poland before world war 2. and survived the holocaust. and i think that poland and the polish people deserve an apology for the words mr katz used. that this will work to have a job i spoke with some of them here in warsaw when they visited poland. and these voices are also heard in new york. no doubt these words were extremely offensive towards us to produce people and our country. we're going to go cry all right that was the polish president there i'm joined now here by my colleague projection months he is from the polish service which it's good to have you here on
11:21 pm
the the show let's start by talking about modern day anti-semitism or claims of it in poland how is it being dealt with. well i wouldn't say that the issue of the semitism is in poland no somehow high on the agenda of the ruling glow and justice party and of the government i don't think that the government sees any urgent necessity to deal with anti semitism in poland and i believe the government would rather say we don't have any bigger problem with that than the other european european countries but let me let me say that those statements made by israeli and minister israeli minister cats has really left poland outraged and there were some very harsh comments coming back from war so towards israel which was actually marking one of the worst and most tense
11:22 pm
face of relations between between poland and israel was there ever an explanation offered by mr cutts or why he said. well. as far as i'm concerned those words were said during the election campaign there were a lot of emotions on both sides in poland and in israel and we've had for example the current israeli ambassador to poland stating just couple of days ago that poland is not a country so i think now it's a little bit. let's move to the reason why mr judah will not be attending the commemoration of insead young bush him to morrow want you to listen in to what president today had to say. the fact that i asked for the facts regarding the start of world war 2 yes i'm sorry to say but president putin
11:23 pm
is knowingly spreading historic lies you know to mention of nafta he's doing that to clear stalin's russia the responsibility for starting the war with nazi germany over john marshall was the. potential to give ownership of it i assume he's ashamed of it today. which is what what do you think that the president there but see most worried about here well i believe what was really worrying for for the polish president is that the russian president mr putin has been very very active lately talking about the history of europe and talking about the history of world war 2 and how it began and mr putin in some several speeches accused poland of partially being of complicity in the in the outbreak of 2nd world war and indirectly of complicity in the holocaust
11:24 pm
which again made a potent outraged in the list last weeks and president under a duda he was invited to attend this ceremony in yad vashem however he was not allowed to give a speech there and. president said that she will not go to yad vashem and sit there and just listen to what president putin is going to say because he will be there as well and he will be giving a speech and it's possible that again mr putin will say something which is not acceptable for for for poland. that's why president did us that we can't allow for that to happen that i will not be able to reply to what mr putin the say yeah exactly i mean he was afraid that basically he was going to be gagged directly or while putin gets to speak poland is hosting its own commemoration at the site next monday how important is that for the country. i'm quite sure that poland
11:25 pm
wishes that this site. the former german concentration camp in poland is the central site for the remember ends about holocaust and about those the liberation of auschwitz and about the tragedy of the 2nd world war that's why i believe the government is not really happy that this ceremony in out of a sham in jerusalem is being attended by so many politicians and that the world attention will be there. in the have a sham and that the heads of states of so many states will be speaking there and not in do you think that the government in poland would prefer that everyone good to the site and i think so yes there is somehow some kind of competition there that we know that it's it's very important to the you know the
11:26 pm
party in power right now the law and justice party how you describe this and that you say that that auschwitz is a knot or it was a nazi death camp in occupied poland it's very important right poland is very sensible about this because there are some media and even some politicians sometimes saying something of polish a concentration camp or polish death camp and this is of course. inacceptable again for poland because it's my sound as if it was a polish concentration camp which was not the fact it was a german nazi camp in white poland and remembering that it's 75 years after the war 80 after the outbreak of the war and so many young people have no idea what was going on during the war what was going on in auschwitz what was it it's my.
11:27 pm
it may lead to some wrong impressions about what we've got we've got about 30 seconds do you think the schools in poland they'll considering the party that's in power or are the schools teaching the history true history about what happened in poland. i guess so however yes however every country has this tendency to see its own sacrifice in his own blood to see it 1st and it's in poland as well where rage for change monthly is oh it's good to have you here and to provide very valuable context into this important date thank you thank you. the day is almost done but the conversation continues online you'll find us on twitter either at u.w. news you can follow me of t.v. don't forget use the hash tag for the day and remember whatever happens between now and then tomorrow is another dick we'll see that it was.
