from serious to emergency in mainland china travel restrictions remain in place in over a dozen cities and all of the country's 70000 movie theaters have been closed the measures are critical as millions are on the move for the lunar new year holiday. as the scale of the outbreak grows so too does the urgency of the response in ruhani construction is underway on a new hospital for coronavirus patients chinese authorities say will be complete in just over a week the city at the outbreaks epicenter remains under a transport lockdown road checks. are a good. drive this with a high temperature ascent to hospital across china almost 40000000 people face travel restrictions during the important new year holiday i don't think that it's a lot of people had no way to get home i really feel for them because i can understand what it's like to have been working hard to way from home for

a year everyone looks forward to being with their family i want but in this situation there's really nothing we can say that innocent before. the outbreak even featured on state television saloon a new year broadcast with hosts ending messages of support to medical staff. in airports across the globe scenes like this are becoming common officials using thermal monitors to screen travelers for signs of fever around the world concern is heating up. 2 of the french cases appeared in the capital paris and one in the city of bordeaux health officials there said the 48 year old patient who had been travelling through china and passed through the roof on the epicenter of the outbreak prez's health minister says authorities are not ruling out finding new cases. to tell me who we are going to do everything possible to contain this epidemic knowing that it is possible and even probable that there will be other

cases particularly in europe just because they're on 20 other identified cases today doesn't mean that no other cases are circulating and for the latest on the spread of the virus i'm joined now by d.w. correspondent lisa lewis in paris who is at the sharp hospital lisa what can you tell us about the patients in france well we have heard very little about the people who are here in this hospital behind me we know that the 48 year old man in the city of the door in south western france that apparently he's feeling better the health minister and yes resign has said that she would give an update once a day in the coming days so we thought it was a really watching the situation. and what measures are the french authorities taking to stop the virus from spreading they've set up a special helpline people can call they're saying you know when you come back from china when you feel sometimes don't go to the hospital don't call your local g.p.
12:05 pm
call this hotline and people would come and get you make tests and possibly take you to special special isolation parts of 3 hospitals in paris for example the other places in paris where they can go the authorities are saying there are dozens of beds available and that they are prepared for a possible outbreak because they've seen infectious diseases in the past and they've been testing similar measures in the past really how is the french public reacting to all of this. well the newspapers obviously running headlines on this people are really right on social networks people are saying i'm quite scared i don't understand why the authorities are not testing. systematically people who are rife french athletes with their devices at the thought is have answered that question actually saying that you know there isn't keep a incubation period of several days so people need to watch their state of health and then get in touch with authorities people are really scared they they are
12:06 pm
saying you know we really need to be very careful to maybe stay home for a few days so lots to watch out for a complicated medic medical situation lisa louis in paris for a 2nd for that and if you want to find out more about possible totems you can look up information on the web site on the virus oh no you know if you dot com. turkey at least 22 people were killed and more than 1000 injured by an earthquake in the east of the country the quake struck near the town of silver just about 550 kilometers east of the capital ankara it was followed by dozens of aftershocks some of them almost as strong as the initial quake rescue teams are now searching for survivors trapped in collapsed buildings. the sun rose to reveal a picture of devastation exhausted rescue crews working their way through the

rubble searching for survivors still pulling people from collapsed buildings rescuers have been battling the unfolding disaster all night. the tremors began at 9 in the evening terrified residents recorded the impact as the ground shook the need their feet relief efforts have been hampered by aftershocks almost as powerful as the initial quake. in freezing temperatures families became homeless over night. sure. our houses are either collapsed or damaged we cannot go back to our village some people have died i hope god will help us and give us patience our animals died we have to spend the night here by the fire. collapsed buildings are not the only danger the quake also sparked a fire on the roof of this house. are authorities are warning residents not to

return to damaged buildings because of the risk of further aftershocks it will likely be days before the full extent of the damage is known but thousands of people already know that they have no home to return to. and for more on this i'm joined by did correspondent yulia hand in istanbul yulia how is the rescue work progressing. well rescue workers are still searching for people buried under the rubble so the death toll might further rise that's of course the big fear here thousands of people had to leave their homes last evening because they were either damaged or destroyed or just not saved because more than 200 ofter shocks have been recorded in the area and there might be more so this is still a developing story so to speak. so what happened last evening basically is that

most sports holes the student dormitories were open for people so they would have a safe place to stay and they probably have to stay for the next few days to turkey's national disaster management or for it he has distributed tents and blankets and bads prison and on on twitter has said that all steps were being taken to aid the people there in eastern turkey affected by the quake an additional support as well as rescue teams have been sent from across the country to this area is it too early to assess the damage yes it's too early to assess the damage of this disaster but what i can tell you is that this earthquake has definitely triggered fears across the country and there is live coverage on most of the turkish t.v. channel it's what people are talking about on the streets on social media and this
12:10 pm
is because turkey has a history of the deadly earthquakes in 1990 about 18000 people were killed in 2 quakes here in northwest turkey is temple was very badly affected too and the experts have long warned that another deadly quake could devastate this city with 60000000 people and turkey's tragic past in terms of earthquake increases preparedness for this kind of incident there's no. well turkish authorities have definitely learned their lessons when it comes to the emergency response but is simple for example is a different story 16000000 people very densely populated and there has been and has been huge criticism of the turkish government that it had for example allowed for whitesburg building without safety precautions that it had given amnesty for illegal buildings that it had taken away all sold outdoor space for people to go

and find safety and that it had spend a billions of dollars on mega projects mega projects instead of investing in the earthquake a safety so many people here in istanbul actually fear the worst ok to abuse you or your hand in this trouble thanks for that. time now to take a look at some of the other stories making news around the world. german chancellor angela merkel and turkish president recha type baritone have agreed to work to uphold the 2016 refugee deal between turkey and the european union under the deal ankara pledged to stop refugees traveling to europe in return for about 6000000000 euros president aired on has accused the e.u. of not honoring its commitments. in chile protesters took to the streets to mark the 100th day of social unrest in the capital some terrible police used water

cannon to clear the demonstrators at least 27 people have died in the protests driven by anger over inequality and high living costs. us president donald trump has attended the antiabortion march for life in washington the 1st sitting president to do so in terms appearance comes in an election year he's hoping to win a 2nd term in november and abortion opponents are among his most loyal supporters. the world is marking 75 years since the liberation of auschwitz and a solemn occasion is bringing together leaders of the jewish and muslim faiths on thursday a high ranking muslim cleric visited the nazi death camp for the 1st time and on friday delegations gathered in warsaw for prayer services in both a synagogue and a mosque to promote dialogue between the 2 religions. never before has this small mosque in warsaw had such illustrious guests representatives from the muslim world lead an american jewish committee have come to pray together for peace.
12:13 pm
gatherings like this one are great way to counter i mean some of his and islamophobia around the world those kinds of voices are limited but as we all know the voice of evil is the loudest in the old warsaw synagogue rabbi michael should rich believes there is no better place for such gestures of re conciliation i think a place where jews experience genocide the worst genocide the german genocide. has a special meaning an extra special meaning any place in the world would be important but here in warsaw as an extra special meaning in a place where the jews the germans try to wipe out the jews some of our members of the american jewish committee say that 75 years after the holocaust understanding of nazi crimes is low tragically we live in a world filled with ignorance of the holocaust misinformation and outright denial
12:14 pm
of its reality. the muslim dignitaries had visited the death camp auschwitz the day before to commemorate the victims of the holocaust it was a historic visit. but you have not. we have come here to emphasize that we strongly condemn this harring crime while one often has all the gas chambers. and the 1000000 people were killed. just because they were jews. and nothing you would. give to that the muslim delegation left the jewish community bears the words remembering us. so to know for our show reporter raising others kids a foster mom's life and don't forget you can get all the latest news around the clock from our website i think if you don't come from exposure in britain and i'm back top of the house.
