a hillside 65 kilometers northwest of central los angeles it belonged to kobe bryant he ended of us were on board the helicopter no one survived. his fans are shocked and saddened within hours hundreds had gathered outside the staples center in los angeles home to the lake us basketball team. or a big fan of the well watching. than to be the same without it 45 years of living are heard now through this much grief a love for one man this is more than basketball it was it was just the mentality to get through life. is one of the hardest last they were dealt with i never even met . bryant 15 national basketball association championships and 2 in pick gold medals and is considered one of the best in the history of the n.b.a.
6:03 am
for 20 years until the end of his career in 2016 he played for the l.a. lakers eyewitnesses say it was foggy before the crash an official investigation is underway our team will be looking at the history of the pilots and whatever crew was i'm board will be looking at maintenance records of the helicopter we will be looking at records. of the owner and operator of the helicopter brian's 13 year old daughter giana also died in the crash a girl aiming to follow her father's footsteps and become a professional basketball player kobe bryant was 41 years old. let's cross now to los angeles and speak to entertainment correspondent k.j. matthews hi k.j. this is such a sad story has anything come to light yet about the coals of the helicopter crash no unfortunately there is there is no cause some of that the federal investigators
6:04 am
are still on the scene or really what i'm hearing is it will take weeks before they can really pinpoint an official cause as to why that helicopter went down in the city of calabasas they are looking at whether or not dense fog that was in the area at the time may have contributed to the to the crash but right now they just they just don't know because it's just too early to tail just let's talk about this absolutely enormous outpouring of grief around the world and on twitter i mean they've been condolences from president donald trump former president barack obama he's called it heartbreaking and unthinkable and n.b.a. legend shaquille o'neal says there are no words to express his people are just devastated what's been the wider reaction in the us today is still shock you know i got the alert on my phone and when i 1st saw it i said. this is i you know
6:05 am
nobody it's odd that they would make a mistake like that i just did not want to believe it i took me to go to rooting other outlets to really confirm that it was him and you know 7 hours later i am still in shock and many other people here in america are just still in shock they can't believe 41 year old kobe bryant really that hero is gone that quickly and not only a bat but his 13 year old daughter died in the crash as well so people are just very shocked and right now in downtown los angeles at the staples center where the lakers the los angeles lakers play which is the team that he belonged to for 20 years there's a massive amount of people outside the staples center right now with a makeshift memorial just talking about colby and making signs and putting candles out and this is happening at the same time that the grammy music awards are going on because they're happening also at the staples center so there is so much going
6:06 am
on so much of an outpouring around the u.s. everybody is really still in shock and trying to come to terms with it but also pouring for his widow and her remaining 3 daughters. kobe bryant was just the superstar of the n.b.a. told to us through some of his achievements on his impact on the gun. well you know before i even get to that one of the most interesting things about colby outside of all of his achievements is he was one of the few in the a players that actually has an oscar award and many people don't know that he had an oscar award a few years ago for a documentary that he did on basketball and very few people talk about that but that's something outside of that you know he had awards for playing in the olympics he was in in the many times over his list of awards are many he's at a time i'm just quoting is it a time in the all-star he's a 4 time in the all-star game in the 11 time all in the 1st team all star so cold
6:07 am
these lists of awards and accolades can go on and on and on on the court but he was really also a humanitarian as well and just a good father a great husband and really care about his community his family and things that went on outside the court t.j. he he was this legend but he did have a somewhat complicated legacy he won that oscar though in somewhat controversial circumstances because he was accused of rape in the early 2000 and which i guess we should mention that as well. yes yes yes that happened back in the early 2003 i believe he was accused of rape by a young woman at a hotel owners and the colorado and he was charge those charges were dropped some time later and he ended up having a civil suit filed against him by the young lady and that was settled but it took a while you know i will say afterwards he wasn't super friendly with the media
6:08 am
after that but years mute many years later i'm thinking more than a decade is when he won the oscar award but he did have a short period of time where people were looking at him a different way and were wanting to find out what happened and he had to come on television and make a statement and apologize to his wife and said that he had committed adultery so there was that blemish for a short period of time in the early 2000 you are correct right and he spent a lot of those years afterwards trying to rehabilitate himself and his image and then now very sadly he has a pasta way entertainment correspondent k.j. matthews in los angeles thank you very much. thank you time to take a look at some of the other stories making news around the world this hour in brazil at least 44 people have died from torrential storms that have caused floods and landslides entire buildings have been washed away in the southeastern part of the country and more than 14000 residents have had to leave their homes authorities
6:09 am
are warning that more landslides possible and dutch prime minister has apologized for his country's role during the holocaust saying it did too little to protect jewish citizens from nazi persecution he is the 1st dutch premier to make such an apology around 102000 jews from the netherlands were murdered in the holocaust. in china the death toll from the rapidly spreading corona virus outbreak has jumped to 80 people with more than 2700 infected and health authorities say the outbreak will intensify the virus has appeared in old but one of china's provinces and in at least 11 other countries beijing has said it will up its efforts to contain the disease and that means even more transport and travel bans canceling major public events and shutting tourist attractions. overwhelmed by the ever increasing number of infected people medical personnel are working
6:10 am
night and day doctors from across china have been sent to will han where the virus 1st broke out the quarantine city feels like a ghost town its mayor issued an urgent warning. because of the spring festival and the epidemic about 5000000 people have already left the city 9000000 are still here it's the duty of the party and the government to guarantee their survival. mobile phone videos are appearing on chinese social media showing long lines in hospitals such videos are immediately deleted by the country's censors. but the government is striving to give the appearance of transparency. we're not sure yet about possible mutations to the disease. progression of the epidemic has not been fully grasped in libya one of. these
6:11 am
mobile phone videos from the aging west railway station appear to show large crowds of people trying to leave the city with rumors circulating that it may soon be placed under quarantine. let's cross now to beijing and speak to journalist fabio. hi fabienne there's been a jump in the number of deaths and china is saying that the ability of the virus to spread is getting stronger so it seems like the challenge to contain it is only getting more difficult. yeah yesterday the health commission also revealed another crucial detail about the virus namely that it's painters also during the period as opposed to sasaki which makes it much more difficult to contain because many people might carry the virus without knowing it because they don't show any symptoms yet and they might infect other people so yeah that makes it difficult that calls for even more prestige countermeasures and that's what the central government here is doing today they announced for the 1st time in the
6:12 am
history of china to extend the. trouble week more than 3 days and the reason for that is i mean right now millions of chinese of this if you read it to the. police mostly in the countryside in the provinces and in the coming days they're expected to come back to the big cities on the east coast and of course the government right now wants to prevent any form of movement within the population because that might spread the virus even more. fabienne let's talk about some of the more than 15000000 people who are in exclusions aryans or in lockdown in china how are they being. i mean for average families those who are not of infected i mean there is something like an every day life it's possible but it's of course very restricted people stay indoors most they only lease the house for the sest cities such as buying food buying you face masks etc but
6:13 am
a lot of the hospitals and also the infected i mean it's it's a really a crisis and we know that the doctor has to walk around the clock there physically exhausted and also it's a big logistical challenge by the central government to keep those cities economically alive to some to secure the supply chains and yeah it's really an emergency. something what if every day people being saying on chinese social media about l.d.s. . i mean i would say the response is a mixed one fraction that sends out messages of solidarity and actually also becomes more patriotic calling for yeah praying for china basically and then the other people who also point out the incompetent reaction by the local government they share video such as you know the particular is of a province the most affected province they just they celebrated just 24 hours
6:14 am
before the parents sent in they celebrated for a song and sing and dance. even in dinner. but of course just maybe 2 or 3 hours after those messages are messages to share the sends us we'll. put them offline so it's really a cat and mouse game like the authorities are not that transparent when it comes to controlling the message so people are speaking out but they are being censored or cage journalist fabienne catch my eye in beijing thank you very much. a reminder now of the top story we're following for you us basketball star kobe bryant has died in a helicopter crash he was with his 13 year old daughter and 7 others when the helicopter went down in suburban los angeles on sunday bryant was known around the world as one of the best n.b.a. players if. up next our documentary
